Fur mnths int my secnd faculty jb, I was shcked that I had t recrd the hurs I’d wrked. At first, I was annyed that I had t waste my time n such a bring task. But the practice f writing dwn my wrk hurs is surprisingly inspiring, sending me dwn a path t better wrk-life balance.
In my study, I always believed I culd perfrm better with extra effrt. My research never felt finished, and I had n idea hw many hurs I was suppsed t wrk. That made it easy t g dwn rabbit hles and wrk mre hurs than necessary. When I started my first faculty psitin, my cntract stated that I wrk anywhere frm 36 t 48 hurs per week. But my teaching and administrative wrklads were s high that I regularly reached the 48-hur mark. There was a lng time during my first faculty jb when my children didn’t see me enugh.
In my secnd faculty psitin, I expected that my wrk hurs wuld again be my business. S when I was tld t track them, I was surprised. But anyway I decided t keep careful track f my hurs, even nting breaks.
I’m glad I did, because the data have cmpletely changed my view f wrk-life balance. With my tracking, I’ve fund that I generally accumulate ne week f vertime every tw t three mnths. S nw, every time I reach that milestne, I take a few days r even a whle week ff. I spend that time at hme with my family, r use the days t take a lnger vacatin. The breaks have imprved my happiness and jb satisfactin.

China, the USA and Russia have all becme interested in whether it is pssible t eat fd grwn frm seeds that have been in space. Indeed since 1987 China has sent 1,000 species f seeds int space t d experiments. These include green peppers, tmates, cucumbers, carrts, lettuce and wheat.
The mst advanced wrk n grwing vegetables in space has been undertaken n the Internatinal Space Statin run by Russian and American astrnauts. One f the mst exciting mments was when sybean seeds were brught back t Earth and planted. These seeds were the first t cme frm a crp grwn entirely in space.
The scientists chse t grw sybeans in space because they are an imprtant surce f prtein in the human diet. Mark Nall, directr f Space Prduct Develpment Prgramme fr Natinal Aernautics and Space Administratin(NASA), said that “this experiment and thers are paving the way fr imprving crps grwn n Earth, as well as ptentially feeding peple living in space.” The prblem is that prducing a new strain f sybean is a slw prcedure n Earth s the scientists hpe that it can be speeded up in space.
