The vaquita (小头鼠海豚) is one of the smallest members of the dolphin and whale family. A vaquita is about 1.5 meters long with two black patches around their eyes. They only live in the northern part of the Gulf of California in Mexico. They can live for at least 21 years. Scientists believe that females probably give birth to a little vaquita between February and April every other year.
The vaquita is one of the most endangered animals in the world. They were first found by humans in 1958. However, they are in danger of disappearing now. The World Wildlife Fund says that about 10 vaquitas are left in the world. Last September, scientists found two baby vaquitas in the wild. The discovery was a sign of hope. But scientists worry that more vaquitas die each year than are born. The vaquita population was around 600 in 1997, but it reduced 90 percent between 2011 and 2016.
The vaquita’s biggest danger comes from humans. They are often caught in the fishing nets that are designed to catch fish such as totoaba (石首鱼). Many of them get hurt and even die. In 2017, the Mexican government stopped the use of such nets in the area to help save the vaquita. In January 2022, the government started a programme to protect the animal’s living areas. Local fishermen must pass a government inspection (检查) when fishing. The environmental group Sea Shepherd also joins in to help. When you visit a foreign country, it is important to know how to ask for help politely. For example, you may ask “Where are the rest rooms?” or “Could you please tell me where the restrooms are?” __41__ Both are correct, but the first one sounds less polite. That is because it is a very direct question. It is not enough to just ask a question correctly. __42__
Good speakers change the way they speak in different situations. The expressions they use might depend on whom they are speaking to or how well they know each other. __43__ However, if you say to your teacher in the same way, this might sound impolite. It is much more polite to say, “Excuse me, Mr.West. Do you know when the school trip is?”
__44__ They include expressions such as “Could you please…?” or “May I ask…? ” It sounds more polite to say “Peter, could you please tell me your e-mail address?” than “Peter, tell me your e-mail address.” So we need to think about the way we speak before asking for help.
It might seem more difficult to speak politely than directly. However, it is important to learn how to use the right language in different situations. __45__
A.Usually, polite questions are longer sentences.
B.They are similar requests (请求) for directions.
C.Pardon me, could you please tell me where Mr. West is?
D.This will help you communicate better with other people.
E.We also need to learn how to be polite when we ask for help.
