When Sydney Raley headed into her weekend shift on Saturday, December 18, she likely expected to do more of the same: Stand at the drive-through window, take orders over the headset, and hand each customer their meal with a smile.
In fact, that’s exactly how it started. Sydney Raley has been working at McDonald’s for about seven months and so far, it’s been her typical after-school job. The day had been mostly normal—making coffee, making drinks, and going into the lunch rush.
But a few hours into her, shift, things took a dramatic turn. After handing a customer some of their food, Sydney let them know that more would be coming as soon as it was ready. But just seconds later, she noticed a terrible look of panic spread across the woman’s face. Then came the coughing. She was coughing like crazy and was speechless. Her daughter was in the passenger seat and looked extremely confused and frightened.
Sydney immediately knew she was choking. The first aid training Sydney received more than four years ago hit her. Most 15-year-olds might panic at the sight of this. But not Sydney. Instead, the teen remained calm and quickly shouted to her manager to dial 911. Then, she came to the rescue.
The teen pushed the driver’s side door forcefully open and got the choking woman to her feet. Then she dug down deep into her memory bank to recall everything she learned. All that training of how to use the Heimlich maneuver (海姆利克氏急救法) immediately kicked in. Still, she had never actually had to use the life-saving technique before, and after a few tries, it wasn’t quite working. She shouted to a man for assistance. The man heard Sydney’s cry and rushed over. Sydney briefed him on the situation, and the man did not hesitate to help the woman. He used the same Heimlich maneuver, but harder than Sydney. And happily, it worked this time, after which the woman threw up the food stuck in her throat and began gasping for air, and she was saved.
24. What did Sydney usually do during her after-school job?
A. Sold headsets. B. Did vehicle washing. C. Cleaned the windows. D. Handed customers their meals.
25. What can we know about this rescue?
A. Sydney’s daughter dialled 911. B. A kid was choked when eating a hamburger.
C. A stranger finally drove the woman to hospital. D. Sydney used the first aid skills she learned before.
26. Which of the following word can best describe Sydney?
A. Panic. B. Calm. C. Cold. D. Clever.
27. What is the main idea of the text?
A. A teen saves a woman’s life. B. A different meal at McDonald’s.
C. How to get a good part time job. D. What to do when facing a difficulty.
C
It is a well-accepted assumption that students come to colleges to get good grades and that they are usually too busy to do anything else.
But Connie Snyder Mick, an academic director of the Center for Social Concerns at the University of Notre Dame, says it is just half of the truth. There are many volunteering centers like hers at the colleges and universities in the United States. Mick says these centers help students seek an experience that may not be directly related to a student’s academic progress, but that is still important.
Volunteering is not uncommon in higher education. Many college groups organize volunteer events for different causes. Officials in charge of student housing often organize such events to help build a sense of community. “Participation in these kinds of activities is good for students,” Mick says. “For example, the bus nature of college life can create a lot of stress for students. Doing something completely unrelated to a student’s studies can help calm them by putting their mind on other things.”
For a more meaningful addition to their college experience, Mick urges students to visit centers like the one she heads. She says these centers exist to create volunteer opportunities that are more complex and meaningful than just a day spent cleaning a local park or raising money, for example.
Such volunteering centers often partner with local organizations that serve the people of the nearby communities. “Even for students with little interest in building a connection with the local communities, there is still value in what volunteer centers have to offer,” Mick says. She notes some opportunities can push students to use what they are learning in the classroom out in the real world and having that kind of experience can make a student appealing to employers in the years to come.
28. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Center for Social Concerns. B. A volunteering experience.
C. Academic progress. D. College education.
29. What is the housing officials’ main purpose in organizing those events?
A. To give students good part-time jobs. B. To raise money for different celebrations.
C. To help build a closer bond among the students. D. To improve the living conditions for the students.
30. How can these centers’ activities benefit the students according to Mick?
A. By helping them focus on their study. B. By offering chances to test their knowledge.
C. By protecting them from the local communities. D. By increasing their competitiveness in the job market.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Volunteering: a Meaningful Addition to College Life
B. A Valuable Organization: Mick’s Center for Social Concerns
C. Guidelines for Volunteering Center Selection
D. Colorful College Life in the USA
D
Oceans hold a lot of mystery, even for people who study them. But it’s no mystery why they re in trouble. We’ve been using them to hide our waste—such as pouring oil, plastic, and poisonous chemicals into them for decades. We’ve over exploited (开采) many fish stocks to levels so low that they can no longer be harvested.
Oceans are also a primary source of protein for millions of people worldwide. If we want to continue to enjoy what oceans provide, we need to do everything we can to protect them and the life they support. We should ensure the seafood we eat is sustainable.
Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to be able to catch their own fish, which means having sustainable options in the store is critical. As the public’s and companies’ awareness about the risks caused by overfishing and uncontrolled sea farming expansion have grown, food tradesmen in Canada have developed sustainable seafood policies and commitments.
Seafood Progress, an online resource, is designed to help provide rewards for tradesmen and information for seafood lovers. It makes it easier for consumers in Canada to find out tradesmen’s policies on sourcing sustainable seafood, whether they’re sticking to those policies and how they re performing compared to other tradesmen.
But tradesmen must do more to ensure their seafood products are environmentally sustainable and socially responsible. This means expanding the range of their commitments to cover all seafood products they sell in all their stores. It also requires continuing to work with suppliers and producers to improve practices and make sure the sustainable seafood supply meets consumer demand.
It’s no mystery that if we want to continue to eat fish, we must do it responsibly. Seafood Progress has invited seafood tradesmen, suppliers and consumers to join in pushing to this goal.
32. What’s the cause of oceans’ being in trouble according to Paragraph 1?
A. The over-exploitation and use of the oceans. B. The mystery that people haven’t studied.
C. The ever-changing climate of the global. D. The continuous decrease of fish stocks.
33. What can Seafood Progress do for consumers?
A. Provide rewards for them. B. Urge them to stick to policies.
C. Provide them with enough seafood. D. Let them know about tradesmen’s policies.
34. What can we infer from the text?
A. Stores will be banned from selling seafood. B. Oceans play an important role in feeding people.
C. People fail to note the consequence of overfishing. D. Tradesmen can sell seafood products without limit.
35. How can we make seafood sustainable?
A. By protecting all the tradesmen’s profit. B. Through expanding seafood production.
C. By combining efforts of people involved in seafood. D. By making policies to control seafood consumers.

My father asked me to chat with him for a while. Actually, I was unwilling to listen to his talking endlessly as he always did. My father was a lawyer, but I never wanted to go to law school or follow his path through life.
As was expected, he cleared his throat and started to say, “Er... What... What do you really want to do in the gorgeous (美好的) future?”
I was silent for a moment playing with the cellphone. I kept thinking, “Should I tell him my true thoughts? What if he gets angry? What if I let him down?” Later I replied, “Well, I want to be a writer.”
I guessed this may be not the answer he would expect. But surprisingly, “Interesting idea!” he answered. I was shocked, speaking in a low voice with hesitation.
“Are you serious, Dad?”
“Well, you need confidence and good preparations, and you still have plenty of time. You need to find out what you really enjoy now. Look, it’s late. Let’s take the boat out tomorrow morning, just you and me. Maybe we can catch some crabs (螃蟹) for dinner, and we can talk more.
Early the next morning we packed up the equipment and set off for the coast. We didn’t talk much, but enjoyed the sound of the seabirds and the sight of the coastline.
There were no big waves and blinding sunlight at that time. “Let’s see if we are lucky,” he said. He picked up a web basket with a rope tied and threw it into the sea. We waited a while. Then my father stood up and said, “Give me a hand with this.” And we pulled up the crab cage.
To our joy, the cage was filled with dozens of soft shell crabs. Squatting (蹲) down, we watched them for a moment. At first, they fought against each other to climb out hard, trying to escape. Many were pulled back into the cage. Later, some gave up, but there were still some crabs trying to escape again and again.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At that moment, my father pointed to the cage, “Look at that crab, there!”
From that day on, I was determined to make my dream come true.

From that day on, I was determined to make my dream come true. Besides my devotion to school work, I spent all my spare time making full preparations for becoming a writer. Reading, collecting materials and writing made my life busy but fulfilling, which laid a good foundation for me. Meanwhile, I contributed to literature journals. Gradually, some achievements as a writer increased my confidence. I always thought of the crab whenever faced with difficulties. What my father said encouraged me on my way to success. Now I am grateful for sticking to what I truly dreamed of.

W: May I recommend you something delicious, sir? Our specially-made pork is great and you can have a try.
M: Thank you, but I’m a vegetarian. A vegetable salad will do for me.
Text 2
M: It is fine today. How about going out for a picnic this afternoon?
W: I’d like to, but I have to finish my homework. Let’s make it tomorrow afternoon.
M: OK. Then I will do some repair work this afternoon.
Text 3
W: You look upset, John. Is your business bad or did you quarrel with your wife again?
M: It is the kids. They drew a lot of ugly pictures on the walls of my shop.
W: It’s really annoying.
Text 4
M: Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the school clinic? I’m a freshman.
W: Yes. Go straight ahead till you come to the teaching building, turn left there, and you’ll see it beside the library, opposite the laboratory building.

M: Mary, it is really hard to imagine what it is like to hear that you’ve lost your job.
W: Never mind. I’ve found a new one. Now I have a large office of my own and a lot of friendly colleagues.
Text 6
M: Lily, I’m going to Jackson County tomorrow. Can you tell me something interesting to do there?
W: Sure. You know, my mother grew up there, so I’ve been there a lot. It’s summer now, so there are many things to do: horse riding, water skiing, tennis and even some outdoor theaters.
M: Oh, I haven’t tried water skiing. It sounds like fun. I’ll try that. Any suggestions about where to stay for the night?
W: As for hotels, I would recommend the Blue Moon. It’s very comfortable. It is in the town center but it’s quite cheap. Dinner is included.
Text 7
W: Good morning. Could I speak to Mr. Walter, please?
M: I’m sorry. He is not here for the moment. Who’s speaking, please?
W: Sarah Jones of the family shopping center. Will he come back this afternoon?
M: I’m afraid he won’t be back until tomorrow morning. Would you like to leave a message?
W: Yes.
M: What’s the message?
W: Well, I was wondering if he could come and introduce your company’s new product in our center next week.
M: OK, I’ll tell him about that as soon as he comes back. And your telephone number?
W: 5657-4330.
Text 8
M: What did you do yesterday?
W: I got up quite early to go shopping. Tomorrow is my brother’s birthday.
M: What did you buy for him?
W: Well, I’d wanted to give him a tie, but he has just bought a new one. Last year I gave him a bike. It was difficult to decide, so I bought him some cakes in the end.
M: How are you going to give the cakes to your brother?
W: I sent them in the post this morning.
M: Oh, did you send them by express?
W: Yes. Regular mail will be too slow.
M: What did your brother get you for your last birthday?
W: Money, as he always does.
M: I’m in that habit, too. You know, shopping is not my thing.
Text 9
W: What do you like about this hotel?
M: We can get a free breakfast.
W: Coffee and bread?
M: No, a real breakfast.
W: Bacon and eggs?
M: With toast, ham, fresh fruit and juice.
W: Wow! That’s nice. How much should we pay for each night?
M: 200 yuan.
W: It’s not very expensive. Let’s stay for two nights.
M: And the rooms are clean too and they even have a view of the sea.
W: Do they allow pets?
M: No pets, no smoking.
W: I like that. Let’s stay one more night. We can set off on Friday morning.
M: Great! You know what? We can get a 10% discount each night if we stay for three nights.
W: Next time we should take our son here to spend his summer vacation.
