Beijing has become the first city ever to hold both Summer and Winter Olympic Games after hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics with co-host city Zhangjiakou, bringing snow and ice sports into public spotlight. Now, let’s take a look at some of the most popular events in the Winter Olympic Games.
Figure skating
Figure skating is one of the most popular sports at the Winter Olympics, in which ice skaters, singly or in pairs, perform freestyle movements of jumps, spins, lifts, and footwork in an elegant manner. The figure skating competition is one of the fiercest(最激烈的) at the Winter Olympics — one slight error, and a competitor’s chance of a medal goes up in smoke. To win the game, the skater has to perform without errors.
Curling
Curling is one of the most unique sports at the Winter Olympics — a winter sport played by two teams of four players on a rectangular sheet of ice. The two teams take turns to slide(滑动) large round flat stones towards a target. Members of each team use brooms to sweep the surface of the ice in the path of the stone to control its speed and direction. And while curling may be a “slow” sport, it’s still full of skill, suspense and excitement!
Snowboarding
Snowboarding is a popular winter sport that involves sliding downhill on snow with a snowboard firmly attached to a rider's feet. The sport is said to have been inspired by surfing, skiing and skateboarding, as an alternative to alpine skiing(高山滑雪). While snowboarding is one of the newer events — first included at the 1998 Winter Olympics, it has become one of the most popular and exciting sports at the Winter Olympics.
Ice hockey
Ice hockey is a game between two teams who wear skates and compete on an ice rink(溜冰场). Each team usually has six players. The object is to push the puck(冰球) past a goal line and into a net guarded by a goalkeeper. Ice hockey is popular for its speed and frequent physical contact. Worldwide there are more than a million registered Ice hockey players performing regularly in leagues.

I come from a family of travelers. My mom started a travel agency when she was younger than I am now, and growing up they never left me behind when they went on their adventures.
I graduated early and got a degree from a community college by the time I turned 18. At that time, I had traveled to around 70 countries. This was the point in my life where people began to ask me the question that a young person will never want to be asked for he himself is not sure of his future: “What are you going to do next?”
In an attempt to answer that question, I began by asking myself what I was most passionate about, which has always been traveling. That’s when it dawned on me — the very first time I thought about breaking the world record.
In 2016, I got serious and started working on my goal to travel to every single one of the world’s 196 nations without any official sponsorship(赞助). I spent countless hours on planes, trains, chicken buses, tuk-tuks and junk boats traveling with nothing but a backpack. I have encountered health issues, spanning from malaria(疟疾) in West Africa to hospital-worthy food poisoning in Pakistan. I learned how to deal with public anxiety attacks by myself in foreign countries, and I had to bear the brain-sizzling(脑子嗡嗡响) frustration of dealing with officials from every country that requires a visa.
Believe it or not, beyond a record breaker, these memories are treasures as they were the most defining moments of my life, spent far, far away from my comfort zone. I’m currently writing a book about my experiences in every country and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. After finally completing this massive life goal, I’ll be taking the next few months to nourish(滋养) my physical and mental health as I make plans for the future.
4. According to paragraph 2, why are the young unwilling to be asked the question?
A. They are unemployed after graduation. B. They are uncertain about their future.
C. They don’t know which country to go next. D. They don’t have good communication skills.
5. What do we know about the author’s world tour?
A. She mostly traveled by plane. B. She starved in Pakistan.
C. She got her visas smoothly. D. She traveled only with a backpack.
6. What does the author think of her experience?
A. Valuable. B. Touching.
C. Comfortable. D. Ordinary.
7. What does the author plan to do next?
A. Start a new book. B. Make a public speech.
C. Take some lessons. D. Build up her body and mind.
C
Directions, luggage delivery, tasty food. Those are some of the things we’ve seen robots offering at the media center of Beijing Winter Olympics. And most of the robots we’ve seen here aren’t made to look human. Instead, they present a wide range of looks.
Two of the most advanced robots regularly operate in crowded space. One greets visitors, answers questions and offers to guide people through the crowds. Another one cleans the carpeted hallways of the main press center. It speaks to passersby in a woman’s voice. It seems to be speaking English. But we can make it out well, because it also plays joyful music while its two front brushes are clearing dust and dirt like a street-sweeper.
Don’t assume these robots work all hours just because they’re robots. They have carefully managed schedules. For example, the snack robots just go around the media center for about 15 minutes every hour—usually only between noon and 17:00.
Another kind of robots helps out with logistics(物流) at the media center. These robots can carry up to 300 kilograms of goods, move freely along the relatively empty halls and automatically(自动地) recharge themselves. They send unique codes through text messages to the receivers when the delivery has arrived. Then they can pick up the goods with the codes.
There are even COVID-fighting robots, which move around pre-programmed areas spreading chemicals. Food ordering, making and serving in the dining room are fully automatic too. Reporters from around the world can enjoy various food options here.
In short, robots play an outstanding role in the Beijing Winter Olympics. But the most important goal is to reduce direct contact(接触) between people.
8. What can the robots do according to paragraph 2?
A. Sing and dance at the entrance. B. Guide people in crowded areas.
C. Cook and serve in the dining room. D. Deliver goods and recharge automatically.
9. What can we know about the snack robots?
A. They look like street-sweepers. B. They show up every 15 minutes.
C. They cook food on site for the guests. D. They have pre-programmed schedules.
10. What is the main purpose of using robots at the media center?
A. To reduce direct human contact. B. To promote made-in-China robots.
C. To meet the challenge of labor shortage. D. To test the skill of AI technologies.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Wonderful Day at 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics
B. Helpful Robots at Beijing Winter Olympics Media Center
C. Robots’ Important Roles at 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics
D. A Unique Robot Show at Beijing Winter Olympics Media Center
D
There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that the influence of media is growing stronger and stronger as time passes. If you have noticed, the speed at which news travels around the world has become faster with the development and advancement in technology. Media are actually influencing people in different ways.
Whether you admit it or not, watching movies and programs on the television or our laptop, ipad and other mobile devices as we relax takes us away into this different kingdom — that is, there are parts in our being that feels we are the ones in the movie and sometimes we even feel what they are feeling as we get caught in the emotional excitement. The effect of media does not stop when the movie or program ends. And this effect might just be the cause of behavioral changes in people.
With action films, children tend to follow the movie hero, engaging themselves to violent acts thinking that it is acceptable because his hero became successful in the end. There are cartoon programs that show acts of violence and dishonest acts against others. In return, children tend to copy the characters and think that cheating other people is a way to deal with their problems. They learn to transfer these ill behaviors to friends.
There are some television shows and movies that attempt to create an atmosphere to change the view of people towards social issues such as racial discrimination (歧视). In the minds of other people, the effect can be for the better, but some unfortunately for the worse.
There had been examples in the past that young people drunk driving imitating (模仿) their favorite actress. There was also a case where somebody set a subway ticket booth on fire because he saw it in his favorite film. These are just a few examples of the disturbing influence of media on people’s behavior.
An explanation to these bad acts is that these people could not distinguish fantasy from reality. They get caught up in the kingdom of what they had been watching and the images and scenes become deeply rooted in their minds.
So the media is largely responsible for giving people false ideas and unhealthy pictures, which lead to misbehavior against other people, and can create a dangerous cycle among individuals as they attempt to do the same or even worse things to others. The sad reality is, no one is turning off their televisions or disconnecting from these influences. The only way programming of this sort will change is when people no longer buy into it, demand it, and watch it.
12. What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 2?
A. What it is that changes our emotion.
B. How media affect people’s behavior.
C. Why we are attracted by movies and programs.
D. Whether people feel being taken away from the reality.
13. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “ill” in paragraph 3?
A. 生病的 B. 不吉利的 C. 不良的 D. 难受的
14. Why some people act badly according to the author?
A. They are just the violent people.
B. They hope to solve social problems.
C. They actually can’t tell fantasy from reality.
D. They want to change people’s attitudes towards media.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards media?
A. Sympathetic. B. Critical.
C. Supportive. D. Cautious.
