On a summer day, a man sitting under a tree on the bank of a river, watched a group of ducks on the river.
Soon a branch(树枝)with leaves came drifting(漂浮)among them, and they all flew away. After circling in the air for a little time, they landed again on their feeding ground.
Soon another branch came drifting down among them, and again they took flight(飞行)from the river. But when they found the branch drifted by without any danger, they flew down to the water as before.
After four or five branches had drifted by in this way, the ducks gave little attention (注意)to them. At last, they hardly tried to fly out of their way, even when the branches nearly touched them.
The man who was watching all this, now wanted to know who drifted these branches. He looked up the river, and noticed a fox slyly(偷偷地)watching the ducks. “What will he do next?” thought the man.
When the fox saw that the ducks were no longer afraid of the branches, he took a much larger branch, and hid himself behind it. Then he drifted himself with the larger branch. When he was right among the ducks, he caught two young ducks quickly and swam off with them. The rest of the ducks flew away in fright(害怕), and did not come back for a long time. The fox must have enjoyed a fine dinner for what he had done.
56.What did the ducks do as soon as the first branch came near them?
A.They fed themselves. B.They stayed still. C.They looked for food. D.They flew away.
57.Why did the fox drift the larger branch?
A.To have fun. B.To catch the ducks.
C.To cross the river. D.To swim with the ducks.
58.What do you think of the fox?
A.Clever and patient. B.Kind and thankful.
C.Interesting and outgoing. D.Lovely and friendly.
What kind of funny jokes do you often play on your classmates? Hide their books or pens away? Or put something strange into their schoolbags? These are not surprising compared with the joke played by a group of six-grade students from Berwick High School.
These naughty students were trying to sell their school building, furniture and “full use of all staff members”. They said that the list also included their headmaster, who might “kill” them if he found out what they were doing. They put the full package on e-Bay for a price of £2,018.
e-Bay was founded in September 1995. At that time, Omidyar’s girlfriend loved Pez candy boxes, but she was sad that she couldn’t find someone who had the same interest as her. So Omidyar set up a caution site to help his girlfriend communicate with Pez candy box lovers in the United States. People can sell things online on e-Bay.
The students also warned that they wouldn’t accept the money they got. After the information was put on e-Bay, there were fourteen people wanting to buy the product. One person even offered £5,000 for the school.
The e-Bay listing was soon removed. However, the school didn’t punish the students. Why? In fact, this was a joke played on the school “Muck-Up Day”. At school, it is a long tradition to play funny jokes on their last day of school before entering their exam time.
59.The phrase “full use of all staff members” in paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A.the school building B.desks and chairs in the school
C.the students at school D.all the teachers and the headmaster
60.________ set up e-Bay in September 1995.
A.Omidyar B.Naughty students C.Omidyar’s girlfriend D.Pez candy box lovers

A.the students were punished B.the headmaster was very angry
C.some people offered to buy it D.no people were interested in it
62.The students wanted to sell their school on e-Bay because ________.
A.they didn’t like their school at all
B.they wanted to make some money

D.they wanted to play a joke on “Muck-Up Day”
Thousands of years ago, Britain was covered by thick forests, home to many animals which no longer live in the United Kingdom. There were wolves and bears, many different kinds of deer and large wild cows. There were less than four million people. They lived in small villages protected by wooden walls from the animals outside.
All this has changed, of course. Now the population of the United Kingdom has increased to sixty-five million. Three quarters of Britain is covered with fields, towns or cities. Although 25 percent of land is countryside, new methods of farming mean that there are fewer birds and small animals living in fields than ever before. The United Kingdom is one of the few countries in the world that does not have a large wild animal that eats meat. In Scotland there are only 400 wildcats, but these are much smaller than wolves. Some people would like to change things, however! Some organizations and writers say that Britain needs to become more natural again. They suggest that trees and plants that grew in the UK before towns and cities were built should be allowed to grow again. They even say that large wild animals which have not lived in the UK should be helped to return and live wild. They call this “rewilding”.
Not everyone agrees. In the last twenty years, over one million trees which at first grew in Scotland have been planted and there are plans for more, but wild animals? Some people ask if wolves will attack sheep or even humans. They are also angry that rewilding might mean an end to walking in the hills which so many people enjoy. So far there are no wolves or bears in Britain’s forests, but soon there might be!
63.Why are there fewer birds and small animals in fields in the UK?
A.Because more trees have been planted. B.Because there are more large wild animals.
C.Because pollution is much worse than before. D.Because people use new methods of farming.
64.What are some people against?
A.Living closer to nature. B.Planting more and more trees.
C.Helping large wild animals return. D.Building more villages and towns.
65.What’s the best title for the text?
A.Making Britain wild again B.A trip to wild Britain
C.An introduction to Britain D.Protecting the environment
Beauty sleep is a real thing, researches have shown that people who have enough sleep look more attractive(有魅力的) to others.
A few bad nights is enough to make a person look “especially” more ugly, their sleep experiments show.
The researchers asked 25 university students to join in their seep experiment. They were asked to get a good night’s sleep for two nights.
A week later, they were asked to sleep for only four hours every night for two nights in a row. The researchers took make-up free(素颜)photos of the volunteers after both the good and the bad sleep.
Next, they asked 122 strangers to have a look at the photos and judge(评价)them on attractiveness, health, and sleepiness, as well as asking them: “How much would you like to make friends with this person in the picture?”
The strangers were good at judging if the person they were looking at was tired, and, if they were sleepy, their attractiveness score was low.
The strangers also said they wouldn’t want to socialize with the tired students. The researchers say this is natural for people. An unhealthy-looking face makes people run away. In other words, people don’t want to hang around with people who might be ill.
Dr. Brewer, an expert at the University of Liverpool said “Judgement of attractiveness is often unconscious(无意识的), but we all do it, and we are able to judge on even something small like whether someone looks tired or unhealthy. This study is a good reminder of how important sleep is to us.”
66.When did the researchers take make-up free photos?
A.After two nights good sleep. B.After two nights bad sleep.
C.Before the experiment. D.After both two nights good sleep and two nights’ bad sleep.
67.The researchers asked the strangers to do the following except ________.
A.telling who looked healthier B.telling who didn’t have many friends
C.telling who missed a lot of sleep D.telling who was attractive
68.What kind of friends did the strangers like to make?
A.The people who were tired. B.The people who were sleepy.
C.The people who were unhealthy. D.The people who were attractive and energetic.
69.What does the underlined word “socialize” mean in Chinese?
A.合作 B.交谈 C.交往 D.共事
Do you have a lucky number? What is it? Many people have a special number that they hope will bring them good luck. In Chinese culture, some numbers are believed to be lucky or unlucky based on the Chinese word that the number sounds similar to. For example, the word for the number 8 sounds similar to the word for “making a fortune(运气, 财富)”. So people consider it a very lucky number. Some people will even spend a lot of money to have 8s in their phone number or on their vehicle license plate(车牌照)number. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8:08 p.m. on Aug 8, 2008. The number 9 is also a lucky number because of its connection to the emperors of China. There were nine dragons on emperors’ robes(龙袍)and Chinese myth (神话)held that the dragon had nine children. The number 9 also stands for “long lasting”. That’s why a man always proposes(求婚)to a woman with 99 or 999 roses. So what’s an unlucky number in China? One example is 4. Many Chinese people see 4 as an unlucky number because it sounds similar to the character for “death”. Because of this, many buildings skip(跳过)the fourth floor, and simply call it the fifth floor. In Hong Kong, some buildings even skip all floors numbered with 4, such as 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40-49 floors. Some buildings also skip the 13th floor, as this is considered an unlucky number in the West. As a result, a building whose highest floor is 50 many have only 35 physical floors.
70.What makes Chinese people believe a number is lucky or unlucky?
A.The shape of the number. B.The sound of the number.
C.The history of the number. D.The spelling of the number.
71.A building whose highest floor is 60 in Hong Kong might only have ________ physical floors if it skips all the unlucky numbers.
A.43 B.44 C.46 D.50
72.What is the story mainly about?
A.Lucky and unlucky numbers in Western culture. B.Meanings of different lucky numbers.
C.Meanings of different unlucky numbers. D.Lucky and unlucky numbers in Chinese culture.

Changes in our life
With the rapid development of China’s economy (经济), great changes have taken place in our life in the past few years. In my hometown, many paths have been turned into wide roads. As a result, it is easier for us to travel. People used to walk or ride bikes to work, but now they often take buses and many even drive their own cars. In schools, students sit in new teaching buildings instead of old houses. There they not only learn from books but also through computers.
I hope we will live a better life in the future. I will study much harder from now on so that I can realize my dream.
