(2020·江苏徐州)At the doctor’s office
Wilson is a foreign student in Britain. He is learning English there. He still has some trouble using the language.
Doctor: Good morning. You’re a new patient, I think. What’s the trouble?
Wilson: Sometimes I feel cold and sometimes hot. I have a headache and a stomachache.
Doctor: Yes, you look a bit off-colour.
Wilson: What colour, please?
Doctor: Sorry, what I said was “off-colour”. We use it to describe how people look or feel when they are unwell. Let me take your temperature. When did this start?
Wilson: I felt very tired last night when I went to bed. Then I felt really bad this morning when I woke up.
Doctor: I see. Now, let’s look at your temperature. Ah, just as I thought, a hundred and one.
Wilson: Oh, a hundred and one? So high?
Doctor: Ah, yes, that must sound strange to you. We measure people’s temperature on the Fahrenheit scale(华氏). In centigrade, your temperature is 39℃, which is a bit high, but not exactly boiling point(沸点).
Wilson: Oh, it isn’t very bad, then.
Doctor: No, it isn’t serious. You’ve got a cold. I’ll give you some medicine. You’d better stay at home in the warm for a day or two and drink plenty of water.
Wilson: Thank you very much, doctor. I’m feeling better already. It wasn’t so difficult telling you about my illness.
Doctor: No, language doesn’t matter too much to a doctor. After all, vets manage without language at all.
Wilson: Please, what is a “vets”?
Doctor: Animal doctors. Now I must end this English lesson and see my next patient.

“I don’t mind being troubled. I like talking to you.” “Then I won’t say anything at all!”
Dad smiled quietly to himself. “I’m going to call Mum to let her know we’ll be late.” He reached into his pocket. “Oh! My battery’s dead.”

(2021·江苏徐州)Language shows the environment where we live. We name the things around. Usually, the important things own many specific names, while the less important things only have some general names. So in one culture, people may have a large vocabulary to describe a certain object, while in another culture, such vocabulary is small.
For instance, the Chinese have many words for “rice” and for “family members”. The British use many different expressions for “rain”. Kids growing up on a farm may be able to offer ten different words for plow, a farming tool.
In some cultures, there is an amazingly large vocabulary to describe a certain thing. Eskimos have about 100 words for snow. For them, snow is so important to life that each of its forms and conditions has to own a name. They divide snow into four main categories, such as snow lying on the ground, snow floating in the sky, snow piling up, and snow piles. These different kinds of snow will tell them different weather conditions. It’s the same with the Arabians, whose life depends much on camels. In the Arabic language, according to camels’ appearance, characters, drinking behaviours, and the roles they play, there are hundreds of different words for the camel and all of its parts. Snow and camel are far less important in English-speaking cultures, and the single words “snow” and “camel” can usually satisfy their needs. When the needs become more specific, however, they can make up longer phrases to meet the needs: “corn snow”, “flying snow”, “big camel”, “funny camel”, etc.
As we can see, there is a 4 between the words and the ideas of that culture. So it’s not hard to understand that each culture passes on its ideas and thoughts through word.
19. What does Paragraph 2 serve as?
A.Opinions. B.Examples. C.Conclusions. D.Reasons.
20. From the passage, we know that the Eskimos live in very ________ places.
A.cold B.dry C.hot D.wet
21. In English-speaking cultures, how do people show more specific meanings of single words like “snow” and “camel”?
A.By inventing new words. B.By using other sentences.
C.By making up longer phrases. D.By translating from another language.
22. Which word is the most suitable here?
A.difference B.connection C.change D.distance

(2022·江苏徐州)Peter loves baseball. Last summer, he helped coach a school baseball team. When he first watched the team of 12-year-olds play baseball, his first impressions were not really positive.
One player often left as soon as they started losing. Another player paid too much attention to all their mistakes during the game. Other boys preferred to dig up the grass when they weren’t in the play. A lot of boys threw their baseball bats when they lost the catch.
While their baseball skills improved over time with more practice, there were still problems with their all-important character. The team had a long way to go. For example, some boys were hard on those who made mistakes. Instead of being supportive or encouraging, they blamed (责怪) each other.
Peter started one-on-one talks with each player to discuss things that he had noticed. Some were about skills like holding the bat up higher or opening their eyes when they were making a catch. But most were about staying positive and supporting each other.
Slowly things began to change. The boys began to take the duties for their play instead of blaming others for mistakes. They stayed optimistic even when losing. The team culture was improving.
Players began encouraging each other, high-fiving and supporting teammates. Peter was especially pleased to see some of the boys taking leadership roles and having their own one-on-one talks with their teammates.
Peter doesn’t think he made huge progress in teaching the boys how to throw, catch or hit better, but he was pleased that their conversations around character led to something positive. Although the team still lost games, the players had stronger characters. Next season, their characters will be tested again.

(2021·江苏徐州)Lisa stood next to her tall silent grandfather and watched her parents drive off, leaving her behind. She looked up at her grandfather. He looked down at her. His skin was a little darker than hers. His hair was black and white, as if it couldn’t decide which color it should be.
“You don’t talk much, Grandpa,” Lisa said.
“You don’t visit much, Lisa,” her grandfather replied.
They stood looking at each other. “Come with me, Lisa,” said Grandpa. He started walking without looking back.

Grandpa looked down at Lisa and smiled. His smile again reminded Lisa of her father. Without thinking, she reached up and took Grandpa’s hand. Lisa’s hand felt small and safe inside her grandfather’s.
