Unit 1 B

I never saw my father back home from work late or ill, nor did I ever see my father take a night out with the boys. He had no hobbies but just took care of his family.

For 22 years, since I left home for college, my father called me every Sunday at 9: 00 a. m. He was always interested in my life—how my family was doing. The calls even came when he and my mother were in Australia, England or Florida.

Nine years ago when I bought my first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day for three days, painting my house. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked was a glass of iced tea, and that I hold a paintbrush for him and talk to him. But I was too busy, for I had a law practice to run, and I could not take the time to hold the paintbrush, or talk to my father.

Five years ago, my 71-year-old father spent five hours putting together a swing set(秋千) for my daughter. Again, all he asked was that I get him a glass of iced tea, and talk to him. But again, I had the laundry to do, and the house to clean.

The morning on Sunday, January 15, 1995, my father telephoned me as usual, this time he had seemed to have forgotten some things we had discussed the week before. I had to go to church, and I cut the conversation short.

The call came at 4: 40 p.m. That day my father was sent to hospital in Florida. I got on a plane immediately, and I vowed(发誓) that when I arrived, I would make up for the lost time, and have a nice long talk with him and really get to know him.

I arrived in Florida at 1:00 a.m., but my father had passed away at 9: 12 p.m. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.

In the years since his death I have learnt much about my father, and even more about every single day.

    1. We know from the reading that the father _____.

    A. liked to paint houses  B. had no friends around him

    C. was not healthy in his youth D. thought of his family as his all

    2. When her father painted her first house, the daughter _____.

    A. could only afford a glass of iced tea

    B. was too busy to talk to her father

    C. could do nothing but hold a paintbrush

    D. spent eight hours a day working with her father

    3. Which is the best title of the text?

    A. Painting Houses   B. Daughter's Family

    C. Father and I  D. Father's phone calls

My teacher picked up a piece of broken glass and asked, "Who broke this window?"

Thirty boys tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher may have found out. She seldom became angry, but she was this time.

"Oh," I thought. I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a mischievous throw of a baseball. If I admitted the guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How could I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn't even get an allowance. "My father is going to have a fit," I thought. I didn't want to raise my hand, but some force much stronger than I was pulled it skyward. I told the truth. "I did it." It was hard enough to say what I had done.

My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher to strike a student, but I feared she was going to start with me.

"I know how you like birds," she said as she stood looking down at my guilt-ridden face. "Here is that field guide about birds that you are constantly checking out. It is yours now. It's time that we should get a new one for the school anyway. You will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding you for your misdeed, but I am rewarding you for your truthfulness."

I couldn't believe it! I wasn't being told off and I got my own bird field guide—the very one that I had been saving money up to buy.

All that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me. That lesson stays with me every day, and it will echo forever.

    1. From the story, we can learn that the boy _____.

    A. didn't break the window on purpose

    B. lacked the strength to admit his guilt

    C. tried to think about what he had done

    D. didn't know what the teacher had found out

A.be punished by the teacher B. make his father angry

    C. pay for the broken window D. get a bird field guide

    3. Which of the following best describes the changes of the boy's moods?

    A. Afraid—Surprised—Thankful.

    B. Frightened—Amazed—Proud.

    C. Regretful—Guilty—Excited.

    D. Nervous—Afraid—Satisfied.

    4. What is the lesson the boy's teacher taught him?

    A. Every coin has two sides. B. Honesty is always precious.

    C. Bad luck never comes alone. D. It's never too late to be careful.

Who's in control of your life? Who's pulling your strings? For the majority of us, it's other people—society, colleagues, friends, family or our community. We learned this way of operating when we were very young, of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us. As Oscar Wilde puts it, “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”

So when people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling like a drug—we are addicted to it and seek it out wherever we can. Therefore, we are so eager for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to. Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting their fix(成瘾物)we worsen our own existence to get our own constant fix of approval.

But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom—the freedom to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think. People have their own agenda, and they come with their own baggage and, in the end, they're more interested in themselves than in you. Furthermore, if we try to live by the opinions of others, we will build our life on sinking sand. Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting exhausted (tired) and probably pleasing no one in the process.

So how can we take back control? I think there's only one way—make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values—not values imposed from the outside by others, but innate values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others, we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life.

1.What Oscar Wilde says implies that ________.
A.most people have a variety of thoughts B.we have thoughts similar to those of others
C.other people's thoughts are more important D.most people's thoughts are affected by others
2.What does the author try to argue in the third paragraph?
A.The price of taking the drug is freedom.
B.We may lose ourselves to win the approval of others.
C.We need to pay for what we want to get.
D.Changing opinions may cost us our freedom.
3.It can be concluded from the passage that ________.
A.it's better to follow others' opinions B.it's important to accept others' comments
C.we shouldn't change our own decision D.we shouldn't care too much what others think
4.The author tries to persuade the readers to accept his arguments mainly by ________.
    A.discussing questions  B.making suggestions
C.analyzing causes and effects D.providing examples and facts

According to Gallup's annual Global Emotions report, people all over the world are more stressed than ever before. Nearly 40 percent of adults from 146 countries reported having experienced worry or stress. And it isn't just adults experiencing these high stress levels; experts have also observed a rise in the number of children. According to another study published in EurekAlert, one in five students are so stressed that they've considered self-harm or suicide. The immense stress they face has been proven to be harmful to their health.

It's no news that stress can trigger anxiety, depression and self-harming behavior, and cause sleep problems, social withdrawal, angry outbursts and obsessive-compulsive behavior.

It might sound easier said than done but studies have shown that the best way to deal with stress is to change your understanding of it.

The University of Wisconsin conducted a study of 30,000 Americans. Researchers asked them how much stress they'd experienced in the past year and whether they believed stress was harming their health. The researchers concluded that people in the study who were exposed to large amounts of stress and viewed stress as harmful had 43 percent higher risk of dying than people who viewed stress as a helpful response.

More interestingly, those with more positive perceptions of stress had the lowest risk of death out of all involved in the study, even lower than those experiencing very little stress.

A separate study conducted by researchers from King's College London and the University of Marburg showed students with more negative beliefs about stress experienced more physical symptoms, such as headaches, tension and tiredness during a stressful end-of-semester exam period, compared with students who had more positive beliefs about stress.

These two studies have proven that stress itself is not actually bad. It is the belief that stress is bad that is bad.

1.What can we know from the passage?

A.More and more people suffer from higher stress levels.

B.One in five adults in America have considered self-harm.

C.30,000 children have experienced stress in the past year.

D.Children are more likely to believe stress is helpful than adults.

2.What does the research by the University of Wisconsin conclude?

    A.Stress generally benefits us.

B.Stress leads to a higher risk of death.

C.People under stress often perform better.

D.Optimism cuts the risk of stress-related death.

3.What is the purpose of referring to a separate study in Paragraph 6?

A.To put forward a new idea.

    B.To support the above findings.

    C.To compare different findings.

D.To argue against the above point.

4.What would be the best title for this passage?

A.Stress Affects People of All Ages

B.We Are Winning the Battle Against Stress

C.Stress Damages Your Health if You Think So

D.Negative Beliefs about Stress Cause Tension

People who are naturally funny in social situations experience many benefits. Is it their tone of voice, body language, content, general demeanor, or something else that makes them naturally funny? Identifying what is that makes them funny will provide clues for how you can be naturally funny as well.

        4. Practice being funny.

Make it your goal to say or do something that makes someone laugh once a day. _____ Therefore, professional comedians often spend years developing their unique style. By starting small, you will be on your way to being naturally funny in general conversation.

A.A good sense of humour does not appear overnight.

It was the middle of the day with bright sun, blue sky, green grass, and a soft breeze (微风). It was a great day to play outside and the best day of my life because I got a new ball and a new bike as my sixth birthday presents, and I was visiting my cousin, Kristy, at her house.

"Here I go!" shouted David while kicking my new ball. David lived next door and was older than me. I thought he was a wild child, but he was actually very kind. The ball went flying as if it were going to space. "That is high!" Kristy said in surprise and we went after the ball. We all had a great time.

Later we had supper and the food my aunt made was good. While Kristy was helping do the dishes, David and I ran outside to play. We started taking turns riding my bike. David suggested that we ride it to the forest, and I agreed. David and I got on the bike and David started going fast.

As we rode through the forest, I felt the wind brushing my face. It felt so great and free. Suddenly the bike hit a fallen branch and we went flying off the bike. Lying on the ground, I felt dizzy(眩晕的). I checked myself for injuries and saw some but they didn't bother me.

"David!" I shouted out loudly and anxiously.

"Hey," said a voice. I turned my head and it was David, who was standing behind me, holding my broken bike. At the sight of my damaged bike, I was so sad that I couldn't hold back my tears. It took David some time to calm me down.

But I was too busy, for I had a law practice to run, and I could not take the time to hold the paintbrush, or talk to my father.

For 22 years, since I left home for college, my father called me every Sunday at 900 a.m.

I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a mischievous throw of a baseball. If I admitted the guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How could I be able to pay for a big window like that? I know how you like birds she said as she stood looking down at my guilt-ridden face.

If I admitted the guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How could I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn't even get an allowance. My father is going to have a fit, I thought. My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher to strike a student, but I feared she was going to start with me.

I couldn't believe it! I wasn't being told off and I got my own bird field guide—the very one that I had been saving money up to buy. All that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me. That lesson stays with me every day, and it will echo forever.

You will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding you for your misdeed, but I am rewarding you for your truthfulness.

As Oscar Wilde puts it,“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”
Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting exhausted (tired) and probably pleasing no one in the process.
I think there's only one way—make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values—not values imposed from the outside by others, but innate values which come from within.
Who's in control of your life? Who's pulling your strings?

However, it is important that being funny comes across naturally in a laid-back and spontaneous fashion."

    由标题"Start by loosening up."

Many comedians focus on the world around them to find comedic material."

Therefore, professional comedians often spend years developing their unique style.(因此职业喜剧演员往往花费数年时间来形成自己独特的风格)"可知,该小题与下一句为承接关系,来说明幽默感需要很长时间的实践才能形成。

    答案:. who . be left . However . returned . experienced . but . What . easily . falls . crying

However

此处指你认为你的孩子怎么样?what do you think of...? What

修饰动词短语be knocked down要用副词,故填easily

根据“Don't you see...”

    Dear Mr White,

I am Li Hua, a volunteer of the English club. I’m writing this letter to express my sincere apology to you for being absent from the prom to be held next Saturday. Now I give you my explanation.

The reason why I can’t take part in the prom is that I suddenly fall ill. My parents sent me to hospital, and I have to stay there for a week. Therefore, I can’t attend the prom. As for my volunteer work, I have appointed my classmate Tom to serve as a volunteer.

I sincerely hope that you can consider my situation and accept my apologies.

    Yours sincerely,

    Li Hua

    Paragraph 1:

When we realized it was time to walk home, we found ourselves lost. It was getting darker and darker. I felt so scared that tears rolled down my face again. David attempted to comfort me. He told me that he once made some marks on the trees in the forest, which might help us find the way home. Therefore, we made efforts to look for the marks but in vain. Having walked anxiously for about an hour in the forest, we failed to find our way out.

    Paragraph 2:

It was completely dark when we saw fireworks(烟火) being set off in the distance. We ran excitedly in that direction as fast as possible. Soon we found my aunt's house, in front of which my cousin Kristy was holding some fireworks and lighting them. Seeing us come back safely, Kristy cheerfully hugged us. She told us that when noticing we had been away for long, she was concerned about our safety. She set off fireworks to draw our attention and guide us. It was an unforgettable experience. Without David's comfort and Kristy's fireworks, I would have lost in the forest forever.
