When I first picked up Michelle Zauner’s memir (自传) “Crying in H Mart,” I was attracted by the familiar name f the lcal Krean market 10 minutes away frm my huse. Every fd and every aspect f Krean culture she described seemed s familiar t me, as I’m a Krean American. Nt nly this, we have similar experiences, and have cmmn feelings f being trn apart by tw cultures that seem t refuse t accept us just fr being wh we are. Zauner shne a new light n my attitude t my wn identity.
In ther ways, this relatability t such a specific target audience can becme a weakness. This memir was bviusly meant fr a Krean, specifically a Krean American audience. With such a small audience f 0.6 % f the United States ppulatin in 2019, the stry that Zauner wanted t tell wuld nt be received by many.
