There can be magic in the touch of a hand that loves you. It brings comfort and a silent promise that says, “I am here and you are not alone.”
When my children were born, I memorized every detail about them: the skin that felt so soft, the lips that looked like a pink flower, and the eyes that looked deep into my soul. And, of course, their hands.
As babies, they reached for me whenever they were hungry or tired or just needed to be held. Sometimes, if they woke in the night, just the touch of my hand would ease them back to sleep. They clung to me when they took their first steps and we held hands when crossing streets and walking from the car to their classroom on their first day of school.
My hands picked them up when they fell, and clapped louder than anybody else at their sports games and plays. Their hands waved at me from the window of a school bus, the stage of an auditorium, and from the bottom of a pool.
As they grew older and more independent, I noticed that they didn ’ t hold my hand much anymore. I told myself it was part of growing up, and I should just be glad they could do things on their own now.
But when you ’ ve been needed so much for such a long time, it ’ s hard to step back and feel unnecessary.
Then one day, I was visiting my oldest son in New York, where he was working as an actor on a TV show. As we were about to cross a busy street that was filled with traffic, he grabbed my hand and shouted, “ Hang on to me, Mom,” then led me safely across.
At that moment, I realized two things. First, my boy had become a man. Second, it was clear that our roles had changed. We still needed each other, but in different ways than before.
That scene has replayed in various ways with each of my three children. They have all taught me to lean on them just as they once leaned on me, and that we can always lean on each other. We live miles apart, but stay in touch every day. There is magic and comfort and healing in the touch of a hand that loves you, even if it “touches” you from afar.

What if you could use your clothes to browse the internet and send messages? A “ digital cloth ” created by researchers at Fudan University in Shanghai is making this a reality.
Research on a new type of flexible textile( 织 物 )with a display system that has multiple applications was published in the journal Nature on March 10.
A user can read messages, reply and even navigate on his sleeve, as shown in a video produced by the team. The team claimed that the material is also comfortable to wear. “ Clothes woven with this new material can closely follow the irregular outline of the human body and are as light and breathable as ordinary textiles, ensuring comfort,” said Peng Huisheng, leader of the team. The textile can also endure repeated folding and stretching. “ Its brightness and stability remained almost unchanged after having been washed in a washing machine 500 times,” said Peng.
Behind the magical textile is ten years of hard work by Peng and his team. The research team created two functional fibers: a silver-plated thread that can light up, and a kind of thread that conducts electricity. According to The Paper, the biggest challenge lies in building programmable arrays( 排 列 )of twinkling dots on the soft fibers with diameters ranging from tens to hundreds of microns. Inspired by the

weaving process, Peng ’ s team found a solution by trial and error: the interweaving of the cross threads can naturally form a dot array similar to the array on a digital display screen.
Peng believes that the new cloth could be used for many things. For example, it could help people with language barriers or disabilities better communicate. In one test, Peng ’ s team monitored brainwaves from volunteers who had either been playing a game or relaxing. The waves were then translated into messages as “ anxious ” or “ relaxed ” and shown on the cloth. This could help hearing- impaired people “talk” to each other in the future.
“ We hope that new materials will shape next generation electronic devices by changing the way we interact with them,” Peng told AFP.
    46. What can we learn about the “the digital cloth”?
    A. It is an electronic device attached to sleeves.
    B. It aims to replace traditional communication tools. C. It’s characterized by flexibility and stability.
    D. It’s designed for people with physical disabilities.
    47. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
    A. The team’s efforts behind the new product. B. The process of making the fibers.
    C. Where the inspiration of the invention came from. D. The advantages of the new digital cloth.
    48. How could the textile benefit people?
    A. It could help monitor users’ emotions. B. It could convey the wearer’s mood.
    C. It could talk to people.
    D. It could be used to treat hearing loss.
    49. What’s the main purpose of the article?
    A. To encourage the use of a new product.
    B. To predict the prospects of the new technology. C. To introduce a new way of communication.
    D. To inform readers of new research.
    50. What’s the main idea of this passage?
    A. A next generation electronic device has been developed.
    B. A “digital cloth” helps hearing-impaired people “talk” to each other.
    C. Shanghai researchers have developed a new type of textile with a display system.
    D. It has been a reality for people to use their clothes browse the internet and send messages.
    D
Come to think of it, the balance between life and work is a strange ambition for a fulfilling life. Balance is about stillness: if our lives were ever in balance — parents happy, kids taken care of, work working — then our primary thought would be to shout “ Nobody move! ” and pray all would stay perfect forever. This false hope is made worse by the categories themselves. They imply that work is bad, and life is good. And so the challenge, we are told, is to balance the heaviness of work with the lightness of life.

Yet work is not the opposite of life. It is instead a part of life — just as family is, as are friends and community. All of these aspects of living have their share of uplifting moments and moments that drag us down. The same is true of work. Treat work the same way you treat life: by maximizing what you love.
We have interviewed several anesthesiologists ( 麻 醉 师 ) about the thrills they feel in their jobs. One said he loved the thrill of holding each patient hovering at that one precise point between life and death. Another said she loved the bedside conversations before the operation aiming to calm the panic that affects many patients. Another was drawn mostly to the anesthetic mechanism and has devoted himself to defining precisely how each drug does what it does.
Think of your life ’ s many different activities as threads. Some are black and some are white. But some of these activities appear to be made of a different substance. These activities contain all the signs of love: before you do them, you find yourself looking forward to them; while you’re doing them, time speeds up and you find yourself in flow; and after you ’ ve done them, you feel energetic. These are your red threads, and research by the Mayo Clinic suggests that doctors who weave the fabric of their life with at least 20% red threads are significantly less likely to experience burnout.
The simplest way for you to do this is to spend a week in love with your job. During the week, any time you find yourself feeling one of the signs of love, write down exactly what you were doing in the column “Love”. And any time you find yourself feeling the opposite, write down what you were doing in the column “Dislike”. By the end of the week you will see a list of activities in your “Love” column, which create in you a positive feeling, one that draws you in and lifts you up.
Our goal should be to, little by little, week by week, intentionally unbalance all aspects of our work toward the former and away from the latter. Not simply to make us feel better, but so that our colleagues, our friends and our family can all benefit from us at our very best.
    51. The first paragraph is intended to _.
    A. introduce a topic B. list the facts and evidence
    C. arouse readers’ interest D. present an argument
    52. What is the author’s attitude towards work-life balance?
    A. Unclear. B. Neutral.
    C. Supportive. D. Disapproving.
    53. The author uses three anesthesiologists as examples to _.
    A. show people gain joy from their jobs in different situations
    B. indicate doctors take pride in their work
    C. prove people benefit from work
    D. imply doctors reduce the pressure of work successfully
    54. The underlined phrase “ red threads ” in the fourth paragraph refers to the activities which .
    A. require your efforts B. arouse your passion
    C. hurt your motivation D. suit your needs
    55. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
    A. Red threads are necessary for a balanced life.

    B. Recording activities leads to negative feelings.
    C. Find love in work instead of keeping work-life balance.
    D. Maximize what you love to remove the heaviness from work.
    第 II 卷(非选择题,共 35 分)

    第三部分:写作
    第一节:阅读表达(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 阅读下面短文,并根据题目要求用英语回答问题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。
It is said that a person ’ s high school years are some of the most important they will experience, and are often seen as a critical and life-shaping time. I couldn’t agree more.
My high school life has been filled with many ups and downs, whether it was social or academic. Even though my current high school was not my first choice, I never regretted attending Southside High School. “ Since you have chosen it, then it is the best for you,” said my parents.
Up until the junior year I did not realize my capabilities ( 能 力 ) as a student. Being in the IB Program, I was told that my junior year would be the toughest in all the years of high school. With this “little” piece of information, I walked into my junior year, scared of my grades. As weeks went by, I started to believe that the junior year was not as hard as everyone had said, but I was wrong. My grades were rapidly declining and by the end of the first term I had had five Cs in seven of my classes! I could not believe it — I did not want to believe it. I tried my best to get my grades up myself without any help from anyone, but my pride just made my grades worse. And I had to miss out on one of the most important speech and debate competitions all year: States. I was heartbroken. I realized that I could not survive my junior year on my own, so I had to get help fast.
Once I got a tutor, my grades went from Cs, Ds, and even some Fs, to nothing but As and Bs. I slowly started to gain my confidence back in all of my classes and even myself. By the time the third and fourth quarter came around, I had been on the honor roll twice, and I was receiving awards from speeches and debates, tennis and school.
Southside has taught me to always keep my head up and never give up on myself no matter what life throws at me. I am proud to be a Southside Tiger.
    56. What does the underlined part mean in Paragraph 2? (no more than 5 words)
    57. How did the writer feel when she walked into her junior year? (no more than 5 words)

    58. Why were the writer ’s grades rapidly declining? (no more than 10 words)
    59. What important lesson has the writer learned at Southside High School? (no more than 10 words)
    60. What do you think of your high school life? Please give your reason. (no more
    than 25 words)
