As pianist Mahani Teave was ready to begin her international career, she remembered the moment when the first piano arrived on her remote island, Rapa Nui.
“I had to go, break all the rules, and just go straight to see this piano,” Teave took her first lessons on that piano. They strengthened her love for the instrument and inspired her to eventually leave her island home for dreams of becoming a star soloist (独奏者). Teave’s departure for the mainland, just a few months after those lessons, came at the suggestion of Roberto Bravo, a well-known pianist from Chile who visited the island and heard her play.
As a teenager, awards began to roll in, including a first place finish at the Claudio Arrau Piano Competition. After nine years, Teave left Chile and became a pupil of pianist Sergei Babayan at the Cleveland Institute of Music and then went to Berlin to learn from Fabio Bidini. “The future of Mahani is only in her hands,” Bidini says in the documentary.
But after four years in Berlin, Teave began to feel the island strongly pulling on her heart and her head. She began to think of giving up a promising career that was hardly off the ground. “I could have stayed there perfectly and would have also been very happy,” Teave says. "But there was a saying in my mind, ‘Mahani, you had all these opportunities. There are lots of other children who are waiting to have them too, and you only can do this.’”
So she moved back to Chile. In 2016, along with her partner Enrique Icka, Teave officially opened their Toki School of Music.
Teave, at age 37, may have given up a successful career as a concert pianist, but through her ambition she gained something more — the satisfaction of supporting the dreams of children, hungry to learn music.
    24. What inspired Teave to leave her island home?
    A. Her inborn soloist dream. B. Her first lessons on the piano.
    C. Her bad living conditions. D. The help from Roberto Bravo.
    25. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
    A. Her unique personality. B. Her talent for music.
    C. Her learning experience. D. Her musical career.
    26. What made Teave give up his promising career?
    A. The desire to help kids in her island home. B The tiredness of traveling off the ground.
    C. The lack of talent to be a successful soloist. D. The calling of her partner Enrique Icka.
    27. Which can best describe Mahani Teave?
    A. Selfless. B. Stubborn. C. Competitive. D. Cautious
    C
“I have slept on the Embankment (路堤),” wrote George Orwell in 1933, adding that, despite the noise and the wet and the cold, it was “much better than not sleeping at all”. Nine decades on and Charing Cross and the Embankment are once again full of rough sleepers, even during the coldest days of December. It is a pattern found in much of the rich world.
However, it does not have to be this way. In post-war America, there was little rough sleeping, and homelessness was falling so fast that sociologists predicted it would soon disappear. Even today, some rich, successful cities, including Tokyo and Munich, have few people living on the streets.
These places offer lessons on how to reduce homelessness. One is that tough love can sometimes work. Conservatives argue that softer policing policies in the 1970s, including careless attitudes to public drunkenness, were in part responsible for the rise in homelessness. The world could learn something from Greece, where strong family networks ensure that those down on their luck find someone to take them in. Many experts argue that it is counterproductive (事与愿违的) to give money to someone begging on the street. Better, they say, to donate to a charity.
Yet, most people believe tougher policies will ultimately do little if housing costs remain high. This is the underlying reason for rising homelessness. So, the state can do something to help. For example, more generous rent allowance might actually save governments money in the medium term—after all, demands on health-care services and the police would decline. Another option is for the state to build more housing itself. In Singapore, a place where there is practically no homelessness, 80% of residents live in government-built flats which they buy at knock-down prices.
The most effective reform, however, would be to make building more homes easier. The problem of rough sleeping in Germany and Switzerland, two countries with minimal real-house-price growth in recent decades, is less acute. Japan has used its fair share of strong-arm policies to deal with the homeless, but then it introduced a big urban reform in the early 2000s.
    28. Why is George Orwell mentioned in paragraph 1?
    A. To show the rich life in Charing Cross. B. In memory of the world-famous writer.
    C. To show the condition of rough sleepers. D. To introduce the topic of homelessness.
    29. What may help reduce homelessness?
    A. Public drunkenness. B. Softer policing policies.
    C. Lower housing costs. D. Giving beggars money.
    30. Which country may have the fewest homeless people?
    A. Germany. B. Singapore. C. Switzerland. D. Japan.
    31. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Ways to Reform Modern Society. B. Reasons to Cut Housing Costs.
    C. How to Reduce Homelessness. D. Effects of Homelessness Rising.
    D
As your teacher passes out the math test, your hands turn sweaty. Your heart begins to race. Glancing down at the page, you suddenly forget those operations on which you drilled only a few days earlier. What's the multiplication table? Oh, you know it — well you're pretty sure, right? Suddenly, you start to doubt a lot of things that you “know”.
If that sounds familiar, you might suffer from math anxiety. Or maybe not. Even researchers who study this condition note that it can be surprisingly hard to define math anxiety. It's also hard to identify precisely how many people suffer from it.
To diagnose math anxiety, researchers design questionnaires, asking things like: “How anxious would you feel about being given a set of division problems to solve on paper?” Those who score high on these surveys about stress over making numerical (数学的) calculations will be labeled math-anxious. The exact share that gets this diagnosis, however, will fluctuate, depending on where researchers choose to draw the line at what counts as high.
In general, people who panic over their math skills tend to do worse in math classes than people who don't mind numbers. But that's not always true. “Just because you're math-anxious, that doesn't always mean you're bad at math,” notes Rose Vukovic, an educational psychologist at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Math anxiety affects people of all ages. Its effects don't end at graduation. Throughout life, this type of stress can stand in the way of mastering skills or projects in a host of areas that rely on computations(计算).
The good news is that the problem is manageable. Ian Lyons, a psychologist at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., compares it to public speaking. Many people get anxious before giving a speech or performing. “You can respond to that positively and use that,” he says, “or you can go the other way.” An issue is whether you can see that stress as a positive challenge to overcome.
    32. How does the author introduce the topic?
    A. By offering a definition. B. By using study results.
    C. By describing a possible situation. D. By asking questions.
    33. What does the underlined word “fluctuate” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Vary. B. Be denied. C. Matter. D. Be awarded.
    34. What does Rose Vukovic think of math anxiety?
    A. It can disappear with graduation. B. It can result in depression over time.
    C. It won't cause people trouble in other areas. D. It doesn't always lead to poor math grades.
    35. What does Ian Lyons suggest people with math anxiety do?
    A. Do more math exercises. B. Consult psychologists.
    C. Face it confidently. D. Give speeches to relieve it.
