    IV. Teaching procedures

Step 1 Welcome to the Unit Brainstorming: stimulating reading interest

    1. T greets the class.

T: Class begins, boys and girls! Good morning/afternoon!

T: Open your book at page 15. Below the title, there goes Liu Cixin’s saying, The pursuit of the ultimate truth of the universe is the final objective and destination of civilization. Below the saying there is a picture. What do you see?

T: Yes, it must be our solar system. So the theme of this unit is probably about exploration of the universe.

    2. T Now watch a video carefully and fill in the blanks.

    T: Lets check your answers. They are 1961, 1969, 1971, 2000 respectively.

T: The video is about several important monuments in the process of mans exploring the outer space. Watch the video again and answer the two questions.

T: T: Lets check your answers.

    Sample answer:

    1. 1) China’s Tianwen-1 Mars probe, launched successfully on 23 July 2020.

      2) Zhurong, landing on the Red Planet on 15 May 2021.

      3) The first image of a black hole, released in April 2019.

    2. 1) Yes, I would most certainly jump at the chance to travel into space. I would experience weightlessness and I am sure it would be fun watching anything that is not pinned down floating around me.

       2) No, I would not want to go into space, because it would possibly be a very uncomfortable journey, not to mention the danger that comes with such a trip.

Step 2 Reading Warming up before reading

T: Think about the following questions before you read the lecture transcript.

T: What do you think astronauts do on a space station every day?

Answer: Their days would include sleeping, eating, working, exercising and relaxing. They have to follow the necessary rules and processes to ensure their safety. They must maintain the station. They can do some exercise, read a book or talk to their families or friends over video chat.

T: What famous astronauts do you know about?

Answer: I know about Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei, who went into space in 2003 aboard Shenzhou 5. Also Liu Yang, who was the first Chinese woman to go into space.

Step 3 Fast reading for the structure of the text

T: Read the whole text quickly and then complete the chart in A1.

Answers: 1. Working 2. Performing tasks outside the space station 3. Eating 4. Exercise 5. Leisure

T: Let me check how you grasp the main idea of the text. Look at the choices. Which is right?

Another proper title of the text is __________”.

    A. Up in the sky          B. A day in space

    C. Hardship and fun       D. My dream

    Answer: A

Step 4 Reading for the detailed information

T: Lets go through the questions 1, 2 & 4 in A2. Then read the text again and find out some important detailed information.

    1. How do astronauts sleep in space?

    1. They usually sleep in private quarters or sleeping bags.

    2. What routine tasks do astronauts do on the space station?

    2. They conduct scientific research and do a lot of maintenance.

    4. How do astronauts drink water or any other liquids?

    4. They drink water or any other liquids out of a bag through a thin tube of plastic.

T: Let me check how quickly you can find a piece of detailed inform in the text.

In the authors opinion, which is the most dangerous in space?

    A. Sleeping.          B. Conducting experiments.

    C. Space walking.     D. Feeding and drinking.

    Answer: C

    Step 5 Reading for Inference

T: Lets go through the questions 3 & 5 in A2. You cant find the answers to the questions directly in the text. You have to reshape the relevant information in the text and then find their answers.

    3. Why do astronauts put on their spacesuits?

    3. They allow them to breathe in space.

    5. Why do astronauts need to spend some time in the gym?

    5. The near absence of gravity makes them lose muscle and bone mass and going to the gym helps prevent this.

T: Let me check how you cope with relevant information.

In the 2nd sentence of Paragraph 4, what does the word circumstances refer to?

    A. Preparations for a spacewalk.

    B. Experiments and equipment.

    C. All kinds of activities in space.

    D. Performing tasks outside the station.

    Answer: D

    Step 6 Discussing

T: Here are three questions in A3. Discuss them in pairs.

    1. What do you think of daily life on a space station? Use details from the lecture transcript to support your opinion.

    References:

    1. I think that daily life on a space station can be challenging and exciting.

    1) The lecturer describes how to sleep: “...we have to attach ourselves so that we don’t float around.” and “It’s strange that we try to sleep with no pressure against our back...”

    2) In addition, “It’s a luxury to eat fresh food” and the astronauts eat “dried or freeze-dried” food. Also, they “must drink water or any other liquids out of a bag through a thin tube of plastic”.

    3) The spacewalk is described by the lecturer as “probably the most dangerous work”, but they can enjoy the splendid view of the Earth below their feet!

    2. At the end of the lecture, what questions would you like to ask the astronauts?

    2. 1) I would ask her about her thoughts on whether common people will be able to visit a “tourist” space station one day.

      2) I would ask her if she saw anything unusual out in space while she was on the space station.

      3) I would ask her what personal items she had taken with her to the space station.

      4) I would ask her how the astronauts take showers, go to the washroom and wash their hands.

    3. What qualities do you think are needed to become an astronaut?

    3. 1) I think astronauts need to be able to cope with high levels of stress in order to successfully live and work in small spaces like a space shuttle or a space station.

      2) They also need to be able to cope with being away from family and friends for long periods of time and to respond quickly in such risky circumstances.

      3) They have to specialize in a certain field in order to perform experiments well in an unusual environment and solve difficult problems that arise.

      4) Being calm under pressure would be a particularly essential quality too because certain tasks such as spacewalks can be dangerous.

      5) In addition to the above, astronauts need to be physically strong and healthy seeing that their bodies are greatly affected by the low-gravity environment.

Step 7 B3 Clarifying the referential relationship in the text

    1. Understanding the strategies of using pronouns to improve cohesion.

T: We often use pronouns to refer to things, people or ideas that have just been mentioned. It is an effective way to improve the cohesion of our writing.

    2. Application of the strategies of using pronouns to improve cohesion.

T: The lecture transcript uses pronouns like it, that, which and they to improve cohesion. Find out the sentences using these pronouns in the lecture transcript, and then point out the relevant part.

    1) Its strange that we try to sleep with no pressure against our back, but the unusual beds dont bother us any more.

    1) that we try to sleep with no pressure against our back (It is a formal subject, referring to that leading the actual subject sentence.)

    2) The routine tasks that occupy most of the day are demanding, but they can also be extremely rewarding.

    2) The routine tasks

    3) Im working on one experiment which locates and tracks lightning over large regions of the earth. Hopefully, it will cast new light on the earths climate and lead to better lightning protection.

    3) Bothe which and it refer to one experiment (The relative pronoun which” guides attributive clause modifying one experiment”)

    4) First, we put on our spacesuits, which allow us to breathe in space and protect us from exposure to the cold and radiation.

    4) spacesuits (From the verb allow, we know which” guides non-restrictive attributive clause, referring to “spacesuits.)

    5) Splendid as the view of the earth is, spacewalking is not as exciting as you might think. Its probably the most dangerous work, with potential risks such as electric shocks. Thats why every spacewalk is carefully planned.

    5) It refers to spacewalking. That refers to the main content of the preceding text.

    6) Its luxury to eat fresh food, because fresh produce such as fruit and vegetables can only be delivered to the space station from the Earth every couple of months.

    6. to eat fresh food (“It” serves as the formal subject, referring to to eat fresh food.

    7) Salt and pepper are only in liquid form, so that they will not float off and block the air pipes.

    7) Salt and pepper

T: Let me check how you master the strategy of using pronouns.

What does the it refer to in the last sentence of the transcript?

    A. Fun in leisure time.     B. All the hardship in space.

    C. Exercising every day.    D. Space walking.

    Answers: B

    V. Homework

    1. Write a summary of the text.

    Sample:

Living in space is a challenging but magical adventure. In the surroundings of low gravity, the astronauts must have themselves attached while sleeping to avoid floating around. In space, special experiments are conducted to learn more about changes like cells and microorganisms, and lightening. However, tasks outside the space station are the most challenging and dangerous. Besides, other daily routines up in the sky, like eating & drinking, exercise and entertainments are also different from that on the Earth.

    2. Watch the micro lesson: Improve cohesion with pronouns and check yourself (Optional).

    1) “My friends said: ‘Now we believe your stories,’” Welty added, “And I said: ‘Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.’”

The word “them” refers to Welty’s ________.

    A. readers     B. parties     C. friends   D. stories

    1) D

    2) Another strategy used at some well-known parks such as Disneyland is for top managers to spend at least one day in their work, touring the park dressed as Mickey Mouse or something like that. This provides them with a perfect chance to examine the scene and watch the customers without being noticed.

What does the word “this” refer to?

       A. Visiting Disneyland.                  B. Wearing attractive clothes.

       C. Acting Mickey Mouse.                D. Dressing up and walking around.

    2) D

    3) Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.

It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.

What does the word “that” refer to?

    A. Jazz becoming more accessible.

    B. The production of jazz growing faster.

    C. Jazz being less popular with the young.

    D. The jazz audience becoming larger.

    3) C

    4) These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.

What does the word “it” refer to?

    A. The modern French lifestyle.        B. The self-supporting hunting.

    C. The uncivilized hunting.            D. The French Republic.

    4) A
