The following four world-famous artists have stood the test of time. You can see their artworks in most important galleries.
Botticelli(1445-1510)
Sandro Botticelli was an extremely successful Italian painter during the Early Renaissance.
As well as standard religious works, his paintings are filled with imaginative mythological(神学的) figures. Realism was ignored in his paintings because he used allegories (寓言) within

Michelangelo Merisi(1573-1610)
Probably the most revolutionary artist of his time, the Italian painter Michelangelo abandoned
the rules that had guided a century of artists before him. He is known for his desire to show the realism and the emotion in the paintings. He used ordinary working people with irregular, rough and characterful faces as models.
Edouard Manet(1832-1883)
One of the first nineteenth century artists to approach modern-life subjects,he was a vital painter in changing from Realism to Impressionism. Almost all the paintings of Edouard Manet represent scenes of the streets of Paris. His paintings of cafe scenes are observations of social life in nineteenth century Paris.
Pablo Ruiz Picasso (1881 - 1973)
He is probably the most important figure in 20th Century art. No painter before him had had such an effect on the art world in his own lifetime. Journalists are the major group of people who make their living from writing. Many young people who see themselves as future novelists choose journalism as a way of earning a living while developing their writing skills. Although writing for newspapers and writing for books require
different qualities, the aspiration (志向) to be a great writer is not one to be discouraged in a
would—be journalist.
Most people want their work to be recognized by others. This helps to give it value. Some people also want themselves to be recognized, so that they have status (地位) in the eyes of society.
It is not a bad motive to wish to be famous, but this must never become your main reason for being
a journalist. You will not be a good journalist if you care more for impressing your audience than for serving their needs.
Knowing the power of the printed or spoken word or image, some people enter journalism for
the power it will give them to influence people. There is a strong belief that journalists control the
mass media but the best journalists recognize their role as servants of the people. There is a difference between the desire to influence events for your own sake, and the desire to do it for
other people. You should never use journalism for selfish ends, but you can use it to improve the
life of other people.
Curiosity is a natural part of most people’s characters and an important ingredient for any journalist. Lots of young men and women enter the profession with the desire to know more about the world without needing to specialize in limited fields of study. Most journalists tend to know a little bit about a lot of things, rather than a lot about one subject. Knowledge has many uses. It can simply help to make you a fuller and more interesting person. It can also give you power over people, especially people who do not have that particular knowledge. Always bear in mind that power can be used in a positive way to improve people’s lives.
8. What can we know from the first paragraph?
A. Journalists are most likely to become great writers.
B. Writing for newspapers is similar to writing for novels.
C. Journalism can be used as a means to improve writing.
D. Most of the journalists make a living by writing books.

A. To earn much wealth. B. To get great power.
C. To gain high position. D. To learn rich knowledge.
10. What is most necessary for journalists according to Paragraph 4?
A. Having a wide range of knowledge.
B. Being specialized in a certain field.
C. Being good at making friends with others.
D. Being able to speak a foreign language well.
11. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The development of journalism.
B. The challenges journalists face now.
C. Why people choose a career in journalism.
D. How to become a qualified journalist.

Their cheery song brightens many a winter’s day. But robins are in danger of wearing themselves out by singing too much. Robins are singing all night — as well as during the day, British-based researchers say.
David Dominoni, of Glasgow University, said that light from street lamps, takeaway signs
and homes is affecting the birds' biological clocks, leading to them being wide awake when they should be asleep.
Dr Dominoni, who is putting cameras inside nesting boxes to track sleeping patterns, said
lack of sleep could put the birds’ health at risk. His study shows that when robins are exposed to light at night in the lab, it leads to some genes being active at the wrong time of day. And the more birds are exposed to light, the more active they are at night.
He told people at a conference, “There have been a couple of studies suggesting they are
increasing their song output at night and during the day they are still singing. Singing is a costly behaviour and it takes energy. So by increasing their song output, there might be some costs of energy.”
And it is not just robins that are being kept awake by artificial light. Blackorids and seagulls
are also being more nocturnal. Dr Dominoni said, “In Glasgow where I live, gulls are a serious
problem. I have people coming to me saying ‘You are the bird expert. Can you help us kill these gulls?’ During the breeding(繁殖)season, between April and June, they are very active at night and very noisy and people can't sleep.”
Although Dr Dominoni has only studied light pollution, other research concluded that robins living in noisy cities have started to sing at night to make themselves heard over loud noise.

However, some birds thrive( 兴 旺 )in noisy environments. A study from California Polytechnic University found more hummingbirds in areas with heavy industrial machinery. It is
thought that they are capitalising on their predators(天敌)fleeing to quieter areas.
12. According to Dr Dominoni’s study, what causes robins to sing so much?
A. The breeding season B. The light in modern life
C. The dangerous environment D. The noise from heavy machinery
13. What is the researchers’ concern over the increase of birds’ song output?
A. The environment might be polluted.
B. The people's hearing might be affected.
C. The industry cost might be increased.
D. The birds’ health might be damaged.
14. What does the underlined word "nocturnal" in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Active at night. B. Inactive at night.
C. Active during the day. D. Inactive during the day.
15. Why do some birds thrive in noisy environments?
A. Because there is less light pollution.
B. Because there is more food to eat.
C. Because there are fewer dangers.
D. Because there are more places to take shelter.

The Pet Lamb
Almost all the possessions had been sold to buy food and clothing for the family. At last nothing was left but the pet lamb, Daisy. At the thought of parting with the little creature, Mrs. Grant felt sad because the children loved it very much. Having struggled hard, she had to make up her mind to sell the lamb. But she could not ask any child to go for the butcher. Finally, she went herself with a heavy heart, dragging her leaden feet, and bargained with the butcher for the sale of Daisy.
While the children were all playing with the lamb, the butcher and his boy came to the door
“You see I am here for the lamb,” said the butcher in a loud voice. Hearing this one child ran to her mother’s side, and asked what was happening in alarm. Mrs. Grant gently pushed the child aside, bent down and was about to tell the truth.
“That’s my lamb now, Charlie!” said the butcher’s boy in a playful tone, going up to Daisy
with a rope in his hand.
“No, it is not your lamb. It is ours!” said Charlie, placing himself in front of it.
But the boy, pushing him aside, threw a rope round Daisy’s neck, and began to drag the little creature away. The poor lamb bleated very sadly. The cry of grief which fell Upon the mother’s ears was too much for her, and her heart sank within her. In a moment, begging with tearful eyes, the children were all around their mother with voices choking with sobs for their little pet.
“Pray tell your boy to stop a moment,” she said in husky tones to the butcher. The boy, at a
word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.
In a trembling voice, Mrs. Grant explained to them how badly off they were after their father died. She also added that the kind butcher had given the money for Daisy. With this money, she could buy her children bread to eat.
