Rising numbers of older adults are unable to care for themselves, often leading to serious health problems and even death, according to state and local government agencies. So-called self-neglect(自我忽视)cases generally involve the inability to perform basic self-care, such as providing oneself with food, personal health, medication and safety.
Seniors who no longer drive, for instance, are often unable to get to medical appointments, worsening health problems that can make them unable to care for themselves. A fall can result in body injuries leaving one bedridden and unable to care for oneself. Failure to pay bills for public services could lead to service cutoffs. Forgetting to pay rent could lead to the loss of a home.
Mr. Mc-Cormack, 75 years old, and his wife, 71, both had mental illness and stayed in hospitals from time to time, unable to care for their possessions. Despite repeated visits to their home by local officials, the Mc-Cormacks refused assistance. But after they were found living in their car parked outside their house in December 2017, officials removed them from their home and helped them settle in a nursing home.
Self-neglect cases, like above, involved 144,296 people across the country in 2018, according to a report. The federal government doesn’t have comparable data for previous years, but several state and local service providers say they are seeing the self-neglect problem rise.
The reasons seniors stop caring for themselves vary, including illness, depression and poverty. The loss of the spouse(配偶)or a neighbor who previously kept an eye on an individual often starts a decline into self-neglect, experts say. And the key to reducing self-neglect cases in providing services to enable seniors to remain in their homes safely, such as reliable transportation for medical appointments and shopping, as well as affordable home help.

A. Give examples of self-neglect cases.

A. They accepted help from others.
B. They took good care of themselves.
C. They ended up living in the nursing house.
D. They couldn’t afford to go to hospital.
30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Self-care benefits greatly the seniors.
B. Surveys are conducted on self-neglect.
C. Self-neglect rises among the elderly.
D. The government promotes self-care of the seniors.

A smiling panda and a walking Chinese lantern will be the mascots(吉祥物)of the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Beijing.
The mascots were known to the public on Sept.17, 2019 at a ceremony in Beijing. Beijing Mayor Chen Jining described them as adorable, unique.and elegant. He said they shows Chinese people’s longing for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in a visually appealing way and extends Chinese people’s warm invitation to friends throughout the world.
The panda, named Bing Dwen Dwen, is the Olympic mascot. Colourful circles around its face symbolize skating tracks and 5G technology, according to the website of the Beijing organizing committee. Bing, the Chinese word for “ice”, shows purity and strength, while Dwen Dwen means sincerity liveliness, and health, the website said. The choice of the iconic animal, considered the national treasure, is not a surprise to people in China. While many applaud Bing Dwen Dwen for its cuteness on social media, some are not favourably impressed by the lack of creativity in choosing a panda. The giant panda was one of the five mascots of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, and it was also the symbol for the Asian Games in Beijing in 1990.
Today is an important step on a milestone in Beijing’s journey to make history as the first ever, in Olympic history, to host both summer and winter editions of the Olympic Games, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach said at the ceremony.
Based on a traditional red lantern. Paralympic mascot Shuey Rhon Rhon creates a cheerful atmosphere of the Chinese Lunar New Year, which will fall around the time of the Winter Games, the organizing committee said. It is sporting(穿戴)a yellow scarf, a circle of yellow doves around its head, and a traditional Chinese paper-cut. “Shuey” means snow in Chinese and “Rhon Rhon” means “inclusiveness(包容性)” and “harmonization”, implying that the world civilizations communicate with each other and live in harmony, the committee said.
The two mascots were selected from more than 5800 submission from 35 countries.
32. What does Chen Jining think of Bing Dwen Dwen and Shuey Rhon Rhon?
A. They represent the IOC.
B. They have great artistic value.
C. They show Chinese people’s kindness.
D. They have much room for improvement.
33. Why are some people not satisfied with choosing Bing Dwen Dwen?
A. Because pandas are the national treasure.
B. Because it is too colourful for the Olympics.
C. Because its design is lacking in fashion.
D. Because a panda has been chosen as a mascot three times.
34. What record will Beijing set after hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics?
A. The longest time in history.
B. The most athletes joining in the event.
C. The first Asian city to host the Olympics.
D. The first city to host two editions of the Olympics.
35. What can we lean about Shuey Rhon Rhon from the text?
A. It is a symbol of Chinese culture.

C. It is a representative of competition.
D. It is a mixture of 35 different cultures.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was doing a big clean-up recently and my kids were helping when my son, Freddo, came across a knotted handkerchief(手帕)with an old dark brown coin inside. “Mum, can I have this? Can I play with this coin?” he asked. I took one look and was immediately transported to another time.
In 1991, there was a time when my friend and I worked in a backward African country, Niger, hit by sandstorms and burning heat. There were many things I found difficult about this place—the climate and beggars were my biggest headaches. So after finishing five months of nursing work there, we moved on to work at a health clinic(诊所)in the neighboring country, Burkina Faso. “It’s much greener in Burkina. Even the Coke tastes better,” the locals told us.
Yet the fact was quite the opposite. Arriving by taxi at our destination in Burkina, we began to unload. I was reaching for my larger piece of luggage when, out of the darkness, a motorbike with two men approached slowly. Without warning, one of the men grabbed(抓)my bag as the motorbike swept close by. Within seconds, the pair were out of sight, swallowed up by the night.
With my passport, money, traveler’s cheques all in the bag, I was in deep trouble. How frustrating!
All I wanted was to leave this place! Then walking through Burkina’s streets one day, I was stopped by an old woman who reached out her hand in my face.
“Cadeau (‘gift’ in French)! Cadeau!” she cried. I’d had enough! I was extremely tired of the country: its poverty(贫穷), its thieves, the heat, the dust and ... everything! I told her angrily and firmly in French, “I have no ‘cadeau’. I have no money. All my money was stolen two weeks ago and now I can’t get out of your country. I cannot give you anything. NOTHING!” The beggar woman listened attentively. To my great surprise, after hearing my words, she gave me a broad smile.
注意:
1. 续写的词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
She reached into the pocket of her dress.
There was a slight touch on my hand; looking down, I saw my son looking at me, curious.
