Sally didn’t know what was wrong with her grandma. She was always forgetting things, like where she put the sugar and what time to have dinner.
“She might have Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔兹海默症),” her mother said. “We might have to put her in a nursing home(养老院) so that she can get proper care.”
“Oh, that’s terrible! She’ll miss her own house!” Sally said.
“Maybe, but we can see her at weekends,” her mother answered. “We can bring her presents.”
“Like ice cream? Grandma loves strawberry ice cream!” Sally said.
The first time they visited Grandma, Sally wanted to cry. Grandma sat all by herself in the corner of the room.
Sally hugged Grandma. “Look,” she said, “We brought you strawberry ice cream!” Grandma took it and began to eat without saying a word.
“She doesn’t seem to know us.” Sally was upset. “You have to give her time,” her mother said. But the next time it was the same. Grandma ate the ice cream, but didn’t say anything.

Imagine this. There’s an apple and a piece of cake on a table. Which one would you like? The delicious cake or the healthy apple?  A bestseller, Willpower Rediscovering Our Greater Strength, suggests that willpower (意志力) is the ability to make decisions that are better for us in the long term, rather than in the short term.
Here is a famous experiment in the book: the marshmallow (棉花糖) test. In 1972, Professor Walter Mischel tested the willpower of 600 four-year-olds to six-year-olds. In the experiment, each child was left alone in a room for fifteen minutes with a marshmallow on a table in front of them. They were given two choices:  they could either eat it or, if they waited fifteen minutes, they’d be given a second one and then they could eat both.
So, what did the kids do?  Well, as you can imagine, 70% ate the first marshmallow within the fifteen minutes. But the other 30% showed willpower they controlled themselves and waited for the second marshmallow. But then Mischel discovered something really interesting. Twenty years later, he got in touch with the children, who, by then, were in their early twenties. And he found that those who’d shown strong willpower were getting better marks at university and were more popular.
Willpower is like a muscle (肌肉), and the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets. So, if you do daily “self-control exercises”, such as making your bed or brushing your teeth, you’ll improve your overall willpower. And daily willpower exercises will help you with those bigger goals, such as studying for an exam or training for a marathon.
Be careful though. Just like any muscle, your “willpower muscle” can get tired. If you’ve had to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat. That way, you’ll build up your willpower again.
And one last thing,  the writer mentions people who learn foreign languages usually have a lot of willpower. So, congratulations!
    28. From the marshmallow test, we can learn that ______.
    A. the kids felt difficult to make choices B. most of the kids showed weak willpower
    C. marshmallows could help improve willpower D. the kids could eat one marshmallow every fifteen minutes
    29. The writer probably agrees that ______.
    A. willpower should be kept practicing without any stop
    B. willpower can be built up by dealing with difficulties
    C. strong willpower can help people achieve their goals
    D. strong willpower can help people make right decisions
    30. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
    A. The finding of the experiment. B. The process of the experiment.
    C. The purpose of the experiment. D. The background of the experiment.
    D
Coca-Cola is to test a paper bottle as part of a longer-term goal to get rid of plastic, from its packaging entirely. The prototype (样本) is made by a Danish company from an extra-strong paper shell that still contains a thin plastic liner (衬垫). But the goal is to create a 100% recyclable, plastic-free bottle capable of preventing gas escaping from carbonated (碳酸) drinks. The barrier must also ensure no fibers get into the liquid.
That may have a risk of changing the taste of the drink—or potentially can’t meet the requirements of health and safety checks. But industry giants (巨头) are backing the plan. Coca-Cola, for example, has set a goal of producing zero waste by 2030. Coca-Colawas ranked the world’s number one plastic polluter by charity group Break Free FromPlastic last year, closely followed by other drink-producers Pepsi and Nestle.
The Paper Bottle Company, or Paboco, is the Danish firm behind the development of the paper-based container. Part of the challenge has been to create a structure capable of standing the forces produced by carbonated drinks—such as cola and beer—which are bottled under pressure. On top of that, the paper needs to be mouldable to create different bottle shapes and sizes for different brands and take ink for printing their labels.
After more than seven years of lab work, the firm is now ready to host a trial in Hungary this summer of Coca-Cola’s fruit drink Adez. At the beginning, this will involve 2,000 bottles sold by a local retail chain.
But it is also working with others. Absolutely, the vodka maker, is due to test 2,000 paper bottles of its own in the UK and Sweden of its pre-mixed, carbonated raspberry drink. And beer company Carlsberg is also building prototypes of a paper beer bottle.
Michael Michelsen, the firm’s commercial manager, says the bottles are formed out of a single piece of paper-fiber-based material to give them strength.
    31. What is the longer-term goal of Coca-Cola company?
    A. To produce drinks of other tastes.
B To stop using plastic in its packaging.
    C. To expand business in European countries.
    D. To use paper bottles with a thin plastic liner.
    32. What can be inferred from the text?
    A. Coca-Cola has very strong competitors.
    B. Carbonated drinks are facing stricter health and safety checks.
    C. Some industry giants are in favor of plastic-free packaging.
    D. The paper bottle company is under pressure from environmentalists.
    33. What does the underlined word “mouldable” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Being hard to be printed on. B. Being able to be strengthened.
    C. Being able to be mixed with other materials. D. Being able to be made into different shapes.
    34. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Drink Industry Is Turning to Paper Bottles.
    B. Coca-Cola Takes the Lead to Go Green.
    C. Paper Bottles Are in Place for the Market.
    D. Paper Bottle Companies Spring up Worldwide.
    E
A character in one of Shakespeare’s plays once said, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Any of these could apply to the modern-day sportsmen. Many still argue about the nature of talent. Some claim that people are born to be sportsmen, while others say it is only through devotion and hard work that they achieve their abilities. Arguably though, it is not until their talents are recognized by the public that they truly have greatness fallen upon them.
With this acknowledgement of their “greatness” come all the trappings of modern-day celebrity: money, power, influence and responsibility. For better or for worse, like it or hate it, modern sportsmen are the role models of children everywhere. These children will grow up admiring their heroes, devoting their lives to copying their every move, and wanting above all to be like them. Due to this fascination, particularly with the great influence of the media, it is more important than ever for these sportsmen to shoulder their responsibility.
In the past few months alone, there have been many examples of questionable behaviors from sports icons. Sport stars of the present day are often mirroring the very worst aspects of society, a fact that the self-righteous (自以为是) anger of the modern press has been quick to point out. It would be wrong for us to expect sportsmen to be saints. It would also be wrong for us to think that their behavior is clearly different from the sportsmen they grew up watching, but with the all-seeing eye of modern media, it is a different world, and different standards must be expected.
Of course, there is no duty for sportsmen to be good role models. There are no prison sentences, no fines, no community service—unless their behaviors are illegal. Unless they break the law, it is entirely up to them as to whether or not they think their behavior isproper. Furthermore, measuring the true influence their decisions have on their followers is absolutely impossible. Some will rise against their idols, seeing them in a new light and not accepting their actions. Others may copy their heroes’ actions, using them as a shield when accused of (控告) the same crimes.
It is undeniable that the actions of sportsmen will influence the lives of those who worship them. Modern-day sportsmen are almost ideals of today’s world, and their actions are watched carefully by millions all over the world. Some may complain against it, denying their influence on these children’s lives. Others may be aware of it but not respect it, while many may both be aware of it and respect it. In a word, you do not choose whether you are a role model. All you can do is to decide how to act when greatness is thrust upon you.
    35. In Paragraph 1, the author tries to stress ________.
    A. the core characteristic to become great sportsmen nowadays
    B. sportsmen become great when their gifts are recognized by people
    C. different ways for sportsmen to achieve success and greatness
    D. sportsmen achieve greatness through their devotion and efforts
    36. According to Paragraph 4, we can learn that ________.
    A. role models usually have positive influence on their fans
    B. sportsmen have the right to behave freely within the law
    C. all the fans will follow their heroes’ actions
    D. no duty is given to sportsmen
    37. The underlined phrase “thrust upon” most probably means ________.
    A. forced on B. removed from C. related to D. pulled off
    38. What is the main purpose of the passage?
    A. To advise the media to choose proper events to report.
    B. To inform the public that sportsmen are no role models.
    C. To argue that sportsmen should not be expected as heroes.
    D. To remind the sportsmen of their social responsibilities.

    五、阅读表达(共5小题,计10分,每小题2分)
    阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Every year in March, while the two sessions (两会) are being held in Beijing. Government officials give reports to the public. They hold news conferences and answer questions from journalists from both home and abroad. During this time, a lot of people are paying attention to China. For this reason, interpreters (口译员) play a very important role and sometimes share the spotlight at these news conferences.
Zhang Lu is a professional interpreter. She usually interprets for top leaders, including Premier Li Keqiang and former premier Wen Jiabao. Zhang is known for her translations of Chinese literary quotes that are sometimes used by state leaders. From the ancient poem Li Sao to the shi, ci and qu writing of later dynasties, she can interpret them right on the spot.
How are interpreters like Zhang able to work so accurately and quickly?
The source of their ability is largely hard work. Most of them majored in English in college and went through a great deal of training. After they become interpreters, they never stop learning. Zhang watches and listens to foreign media such as BBC, VOA and CNN on TV or the radio every day as part of her training. She described it as an “unshakable routine” that she doesn’t break unless there is urgent work.
According to China Radio International, a month before the two sessions, the interpreters are told who they are going to interpret for. They then make full use of the month to prepare themselves. They try to predict what kinds of questions might be asked. They also look at literary quotes that the spokesperson might plan to use when they answer questions.
There is no “secret” to the success of China’s best interpreters. It’s all a matter of skill and hard work.
