It is every kid’s most frightening dream and six-year-old Jaden Hayes has gone through it-twice. First, he lost his dad when he was four and then last month his mom died unexpectedly in her sleep.
“I tried and I tried and I tried to get her awake-I couldn’t,” said Jaden.
Jaden is understandably heartbroken.
But there’s another side to his sadness. He first made this side public a few weeks ago when he told his aunt, now guardian(监护人), Barbara DiCola, that he was sick and tired of seeing everyone sad all the time. And he had a plan to fix it.
“And that was the beginning of it,” said Barbara. “That’s where the adventure began.” Jaden asked his aunt Barbara to buy a bunch of little toys and bring him to downtown Savan-nah, Georgia near where he lives, so he could give them away.
“I’m trying to make people smile,” said Jaden. Jaden aims at people who aren’t already smiling and then turns their day around. He’s gone out on four different occasions now and he is always successful. Even if sometimes he doesn’t get exactly the reaction he was hoping for.
It is just so amazing to some people that a six-year-old orphan would give away a toy-ex-pecting nothing in return-except a smile.
“I’m counting on it to be 33,000,” said Jaden. When asked if he thinks he can make that goal, he answered: “I think I can.”
24. Why did Jaden begin his plan?
A. He wanted the public to help him. B. He was tired of seeing everyone.
C. He wanted to make people happy. D. He was sad about his parents’ death.
25. Who will probably get Jaden’s help?
A. Those who have no ability to smile. B. Those who want toys to play with.
C. Those who are not successful. D. Those who feel sad about life.
26. How do people react to Jaden’s kindness?
A. They give him toys in return. B. All of them don't react as expected.
C. They give him nothing in return. D. They are amazed about the toys.
27. How does Jaden feel about his plan?
A. Pessimistic. B. Optimistic. C. Worried. D. Amazed.

A group of fifteen volunteers lived in the Lombrives cave for 40 days without clocks, phones, or sunlight as part of a $1.4 million project called Deep Time. The project, led by the Human Adaption(适应) Institute, aims to explore the limits of human ability to adapt to isola-tion(隔离).
Social media shows the smiling volunteers coming from the cave to a round of applause while wearing special sunglasses to protect their eyes after so long in the dark.
Researchers at the Human Adaption Institute monitored the volunteers closely during their time in the cave. They would regularly check the team's sleeping patterns, social activities, and cognitive(认知的)functions.
During their time in the cave, the volunteers had no communication with the outside world. They slept in tents and made their own electricity with a pedal bike since there was no natural light. They also drew water from a well 146 feet below the earth. Since there was no sunlight, the team had to follow their biological clocks to know when to sleep, eat, or do daily tasks.
All he volunteers were interviewed after the experiment. Christian said he thought he had been underground for 23 days because of losing his sense of time. Another volunteer, Johan, said he was eager to leave the cave. But most of other volunteers felt differently, with two thirds say-ing they wanted to stay in the cave for longer. “For once in our lives, we had time and could stop to live and do our tasks. It was great.” said Marina. However, Marina did admit that she felt happy to be outdoors and hear natural sounds again.
The researchers behind the project say their next step will be doing more experiments to find out how people can adapt to various extreme living conditions. With our planet's environment being destroyed, we have to find ways to adapt to it. Then we will have a better chance to survive in our future planet or other planets, whether they are similar to ours or not.
28. Why did the volunteers wear sunglasses when coming out of the cave?
A. To allow their eyes to return to normal.
B. To protect themselves from the media.
C. To continue to work for the experiment.
D. To protect their completely damaged eyes.
29. What does the underlined word “monitored” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Led. B. Concerned. C. Required. D. Watched.
30. What’s the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. The volunteers’ life in the cave. B. The volunteers’ social activities.
C. The volunteers’ ways to communicate. D. The volunteers’ mental health in the cave.
31. What do we know about the volunteers?
A. They used a pedal bike to keep fit.
B. Christian stayed in the cave for 23 days.
C. The majority were positive about the cave life.
D. Marina was too satisfied with the cave life to go out.

Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain Computer Interface (BCD) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.
Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, showed a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person's thoughts.
In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.
"Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord(脊髓) to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles.” Tavella says. “Our system allows disa-bled people to communicate with external(外部的) world and also to control devices.”
The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp(头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.
Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that in-terprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and con- trolling devices. One example is this wheelchair.”
He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients in order to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.
32. What is the function of Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology?
A. Helping the disabled to recover. B. Controlling a person's thoughts.
C. Helping to update computer systems. D. Linking the human brain with computers.
33. How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?
A. By using his mind. B. By moving his hand.
C. By talking to the machine. D. By controlling his muscles.
34. Why will the team test with real patients?
A. To make profits from them. B. To make them live longer.
C. To prove the technology useful to them. D. To learn about their physical condition.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Introduction of the BCI Research Center in Switzerland
B. New Findings About How the Human Brain Works
C. Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries
D. BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled

Habits Of Highly, Successful Students
Never Over- Study
When you spend too much time studying, you will quickly lose focus and the time spent in studying will become “junk time”. You think you're studying but you’re just sitting there re-reading the same sentence about 100 times and you're not getting anywhere. Instead, take regular breaks. 36 . Besides, it will give your mind some time to take in what you have been doing. Plan Your Study
37 .They actually plan what they are going to do-they actually plan the time they will study and they set goals for what will be achieved. If you want to be successful, do as successful people do. Make a plan and set a goal and stick to it, which will create a routine and a routine is the first step towards developing a habit. 38 .
Front Up To The Toughest Work First
Many of us like to do the easy things first to build our confidence. That’s fair enough. The only challenge with this approach is that you use up your primary energy at the start of any study period. So if you are dealing with the easy parts with your primary energy, you will be lack of en-ergy when it comes to dealing with the hard part. So what happens then? 39 .We all do it. We really shouldn’t, though. So develop the habit of giving your primary energy to the hard tasks and completing the easy stuff last.
40
Do we really have to explain this? Just turn them off for an hour, we promise the world will still be there when you log back in! Don't text your friends; don't chat while doing memory ac-tivities; don’t make phone calls; just focus on what you are doing. Even if you focus on work for 15 minuets followed by 5 minutes of chatting, it’s better than 30 minutes of work while also chatting! You get that right?
A. Achieve Your Goal
B. Positive habits decide future success
C. You get tired and impatient and just give up
D. Making a plan can make you get more excellent
E. Get Off Social Networking Sites And Turn Off The Phone
F. Taking breaks will make you energetic again and refresh your mind
G. Top students don’t just randomly (随意地) sit down and complete work

A Singing Competition
Last Saturday I took part in a singing competition organized by our school.
In the meeting hall at 3 p.m., all the teachers and students arrived on time. There were ten competitors in the competition and I was the last one to sing. I was very nervous while waiting for my turn because all the competitors sang well. However, I tried my best to calm myself down. Finally, I won the first prize unexpectedly.
It is of great importance to keep calm. This activity not only improve my singing skill but also build up my confidence.

M: Sally left at 8:00 and Julie, as usual, ran out fifteen minutes later.
Text 2
M: I forgot my student ID. Can I still check out a book?
W: It’s okay, as long as you don’t have any overdue books. What’s your student number?
Text 3
W: Edward, would you like to go for a hike?
M: Thanks for your invitation, Jenny. But I’ll have to pass. My knees are very painful from running all week.
W: OK. Some other time then.
Text 4
W: I heard that you are a movie fan. How often do you watch movies?
M: Quite often. I’m a great fan of films. I watch every other day, I guess.
Text 5
M: Can you tell me where Mr. Fielding’s office is, please?
W: Yes. Go through those double doors there on the first floor and then straight on. It’s the second room on the right after the stairs. His name’s on the door.
Text 6
M: What’s the matter, Mary? What are you looking for?
W: My jacket. I’ve made an appointment with Dr. Johnson.
M: Do you have a fever?
W: No, I don’t think so, but I have a pain in my chest. I am afraid I have to leave now. It’s ten already. Thirty minutes left. Bye.
M: Bye. I hope it’s nothing serious.
Text 7
W: Wow, did you just go swimming in a pool of sweat or what?
M: Very funny. It was hot out there. And I ran two miles more than I usually do.
W: I’ll bet you lost 5 pounds of your body weight after you jogged.
M: Yeah. I can’t wait to take a shower. Have you seen my brown shorts?
W: Yeah, they are in the laundry room. I was just about to do a load. Why don’t you throw those dirty clothes in there? I will wash them with others.
M: Good idea. Let me just get something to drink first. I don’t think I’ve ever been so thirsty in my entire life.
W: Yeah, of course. First things first.
Text 8
W: Have you seen our waiter?
M: I think he’s coming now.
W: Well, we’ve already been sitting here for fifteen minutes.
M: Here he comes… Oh, I guess that wasn’t him.
W: There is no excuse for this poor service. The restaurant is not even that busy tonight.
M: I know.
W: I was so excited to try this new restaurant, but they need to hire a few more waiters.
M: Do you want me to go to the bar and get you a drink while we wait?
W: No, it’s OK… You know, I changed my mind. I’m going to order a hamburger instead of the steak.
M: Hey, if you keep opening the menu, the waiter is never going to pay attention to us.
W: Well, if he doesn’t get over here soon, I may just end up at McDonald’s.
Text 9
W: Good morning, Mr. Miller. My name is Alice Sommers. I have come to interview you for our school newspaper.
M: Good morning. I suppose you would like my opinions on some social problems.
W: Not exactly, sir. We’d like to find out how your normal day begins.
M: Well, that’s easy. My alarm clock wakes me up at 6:15 am. Then I do a few exercises to get my head clear, take a shower and have my breakfast, and the morning newspaper. I arrive at my office a little before 8:00 am and begin by checking any messages. If possible, I take a little rest about 2:00 pm to relax and then continue with my schedule until 6:00 or 7:00 pm. I usually get home around 7:30 pm, spend some time with my family, and go to bed about 11:00 pm. You know I have two kids that I don’t see very much except on weekends. Fortunately, we spend a lot of time together on weekends, unless there’s some emergency that I have to attend to.
W: Thank you very much.
M: It’s a pleasure.
Text 10
W: Good morning. I am Kate Green, head nurse of the school hospital. I’ll say a few words about the hospital before you move on to the library. The hospital is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm every day, but there is a number you can call anytime—746539. Of course, I hope that none of you would get sick, but in case you do become ill, I hope you know what to do. For example, if you have a really bad cold, it’s a good idea to come and see the doctor. Last year several students didn’t take this seriously, and they developed terrible coughs. But if you have just an ordinary cold, usually you should stay in your room and have a good rest. It’s wise to have less exercise, or you will get much sicker. Any questions? If not, you can move on.
