With an MLB caster (投手) dad, Patrick Mahomes Ⅱ has been training to become a professional athlete almost his whole life. “Ever since I could remember, I was playing something. I didn’t think I would be a football player, but I thought I would be a professional athlete for sure…a baseball or basketball player,” the Kansas City Chiefs star tells CNBC Make It.
Mahomes has had the same trainer since he was 10, and though he didn’t focus on football until his second year at Texas Tech, he’s known for an unimaginable ability to do with what’s happening around him on the field. He also practices every single kind of wild throw he might make in a game. With that knack for top performance, during four seasons in the NFL Mahomes had led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl in 50 years, for which he was named the game's MVP. At 25, Mahomes has also signed the largest sports contract(合同) in history: In July, he signed a deal with the Chiefs worth nearly $500 million over 10 years.
But for all his wins, Mahomes says a defeat like the Chiefs’ 9-31 Super Bowl loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers can be more useful. “People see me on I he field playing and winning a lot of football games, and they see the contract and the different businesses that I work with, and they think that everything doing is kind of just working out,” Mahomes tells CNBC Make It. But “I think defeat helps you more than success,” he says. “I just do whatever I can to be better and learn from the mistakes.”
Here, Mahomes talks to CNBC Make It about his mental state on the field, his routine, the advice he will give his younger self and more.

After the Covid-19 began early in 2020, Traverse and his colleagues turned their attention toward new ways to make small interactions(互动) between potentially sick patients and health care workers. To that end, they worked with Boston Dynamics to create a mobile robot that could interact with patients as they waited in the emergency department. The robots were equipped with sensors(传感器) that allowed them to measure signs of life. The robots also carried an iPad that allowed for remote video communication with a health care provider.
This kind of robot could reduce health care workers’ risk of exposure to Covid-19 and help to conserve the personal protective equipment that was needed for each interaction. However, the question still remained whether patients would accept this type of interaction.
In Traverso’s study they were trying to tide that up and understand if the population accepted a solution like this one. The researchers first conducted a nationwide survey of about 1,000 people. They asked questions regarding the acceptability of robots in health care, including whether people would be comfortable with robots performing not only classification but also other tasks such as planting a tube, or turning a patient over in bed. On average, the subjects stated that they were open to these types of interactions.
The researchers then tested one of their robots in the emergency department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital last spring, when Covid-19 cases were flooding in Massachusetts Fifty-one patients were approached in the waiting room and asked if they would be willing to participate in the study, and 41 agreed. These patients were interviewed about their symptoms via video connection, using an iPad carried by a dog-like robot developed by Boston Dynamics. More than 90 percent of the participants reported that they were satisfied with the robotic system.
“For the purposes of gal Bering quick classification information, the patients found the experience to be similar to what they would have experienced talking to a person,” Traverso says.
28. What can the robots Traverse and his colleagues created do?
A. Check the breathing rate.
B. Carry an iPad for the patients.
C. Guard the emergency department.
D. Find new ways to talk with patients.

Increasing electric vehicle sales has urged a growing demand for lithium(锂). But the light metal, which is a must for making power-packed rechargeable batteries, isn't abundant. Now, researchers report a major step toward developing a potentially limitless lithium supply: pulling it straight out of seawater.
Lithium stores more energy by weight than other battery materials. Producers use more than 160,000 tons of the material every year. But lithium supplies are limited. However, seawater could come to the rescue. The world's oceans contain an estimated 180 billion tons of lithium. But it's thin, present at roughly 0.2 parts per million. Researchers have tried to selectively get lithium from seawater.
Choi and other researchers have also tried to use lithium-ion battery electrodes(电极) to pull lithium directly from seawater without the need for first making the water boiling. But during the course it pulls lithium and sodium(钠) as well. To avoid this problem» researchers led by Yi Cui, a materials scientist at Stanford University, looked for ways to make electrode materials more selective. First, they coated an electrode with a thin layer as a barrier, which is easier for them to go through and into the electrode sandwich. The researchers also changed the way they controlled the electric voltage(电压). Instead of applying a constant negative voltage to the electrode, they cycled it. Repeating the cycle concentrated lithium in the electrode. After 10 such cycles, taking just minutes, Cui and colleagues ended up with a one- to-one rate of lithium to sodium,
“That doubles the selectivity, at least,” compared with previous attempts to use battery electrodes to harvest lithium, says Chong Liu, a materials scientist at the University of Chicago. The advance is still not likely cheap enough to compete with mining lithium on land. However, she says her group is attempting to increase selectivity by using other types of lithium-ion battery electrodes.
32. How much pure lithium may the sea contain?
A. 16,000 tons. B. 36,000 tons. C. 90 billion tons. D. 180 billion tons.
33. Why did the researchers change the way to control the voltage?
A. To avoid lithium being crowded out.
B. To get lithium without boiling seawater.
C. To compete with mining lithium on land.
D. To have the same amount of lithium and sodium.
34. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Seawater provides a battery material.
B. Lithium is prized for recharging.
C. Lithium’s shortage has raised concerns.
D. Electric vehicle sales are developing.
35. What is the author’s attitude to the major step in the text?
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Disapproving. D. Ambiguous.

Even if you’re in a tough situation, taking advice can be really hard. Sometimes, though, an outside perspective can help you see things in a new light, making it easier to decide what to do. 36 Then, take some time to think about that advice critically(批判性地) before you make your decision.
Let go of the idea that you already have the answer. Unfortunately, we all have a tendency to be over-confident that we know what’s best. 37 When someone is offering your advice, try to listen in a receptive and open-minded way. After all, they might have a solution that could work better than whatever you already had in mind.
Choose your advisers wisely. 38 The best advice comes from people who’ve been in your shoes before, who really care about you, or who are experts on the subject in question. However, just because someone who is successful in their field doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll give you good advice. Don’t let someone’s position cloud your judgment.
39 Don't feel like you only have to get advice from one person. Instead, reach out to several people whose judgment and experience you really trust. That way, you can be sure you're getting a broad enough perspective on the issue.
Show gratitude for any advice you take. It’s important to let people know that you appreciate their advice, as well as how it made an effect on you. 40
A. Seek several different opinions.
B. However, that mental state can really hold you back.
C. Be sharp-eyed when you’re choosing who to take advice from.
D. Remember to ask for advice only from people who always agree with you.
E. Not only is this polite, but it also lets the person know that you value their opinion.
F. If you’ve always done something a certain way, someone might suggest a different way.
G. It might not be easy, but try to drop your defenses and listen to the advice in a receptive way.

Setting-up Exercises During the Break in My School
Every weekday at school, we take exercise after the second class in the morning. When the bell goes off, out rush we students and our teachers to the playground. With music playing, we perform the moves gracefully.
I love this exercise. First, I always feel exhausted after having two classes and the exercise charges me up, bringing me back to the full strength for the rest of the morning. Besides, I enjoy the rhythm to the exercise a lot and I feel as if I were dancing on a beautiful stage. Last but not least, it’s great and impressive to see myself performing moves with thousands of schoolmates at the same time.
In a word, it is my favourite exercise, whose value is beyond my words.
