Claire Lomas, who broke her back in a horseriding accident, has raised over £575,000 for charity through a number of events, and became the first person to complete a marathon in her ReWalk Suit — a robotic exoskeleton (外骨骼) that enables her to walk. In her latest challenge, Lomas continued throughout the day and night without sleep to walk the race in Portsmouth with the aid of the suit and a pair of crutches (拐杖). She was met with cheers and applause as she crossed the line, having posted regular updates on Twitter as she battled (斗争) wind and rain.

Lomas said the fact that this was her first longdistance race without stopping meant “it was a little bit unknown” whether she could finish, and added that she was “really grateful to everyone that supported me ... I had a few tears.”

At the halfway stage, Lomas remained in high spirits and posted a video of herself singing Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer. And she showed the exhausting effects of the race with a mile to go when she tweeted:  “Help me get to the last mile as I’m so tired.”

Her effort has so far raised more than £4,000 for the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation. After collecting her award, she said, “My accident was 10 years ago in May. When I think back to that first year or two I would have loved for someone to tell me what the future had in store — back then, everything felt so bleak with so many dark days. I forced myself to take small opportunities and they have led on to bigger things. It has taken a lot of small little steps to get here.”

    24. What do we know about Claire Lomas?

    A. She failed to reach the end.

    B. She got injured in a marathon.

    C. She walked the race with a special suit.

    D. She earned £575,000 for herself in the race.

    25. What did Claire Lomas say about the race?

    A. She was unwilling to take part in it.

    B. She believed that she could complete it.

    C. She had confidence in winning an award.

    D. She felt uncertain about the result of the race.

    26. What does the underlined word “bleak” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A. Special.    B. Hopeless.   C. Interesting.   D. Unnecessary.

    27. What can we learn from Claire Lomas’s experience?

    A. Every cloud has a silver lining.    B. Charity begins at home.

    C. Many hands make light work.     D. Strike while the iron is hot.

    C

The other day, my parents stopped by and dropped off a birthday gift to me. After the visit I watched my parents walking down my front steps toward their car. My father took my mother by the arm and slowly and carefully helped her step down the small steps, which hit me really hard. It has been happening slowly over the years. Because my own life has been going through so much change (my kids have grown up and moved out over these years), I had somehow simply failed to notice just how much my own parents were aging.

As a child we see our dads as these big strong men who work hard, protect us, and just take care of things. We see our moms as our caretakers who are always there to make sure our needs are attended to so we always know we are loved. All through my growing up they looked the same to me. That is how they have always seemed to me. Now I see a little gray haired mom who is fragile and breakable, and I see a gray haired father who walks a little slower than he once did.

The thought made me break into tears. And I realize I need to spend more time with my parents. I need to make sure I get their advice now on the things I should know for the future so I don't waste my chance to get it while they are still both here with me. I need to ask them to tell me more stories about their own life and all the lessons they have learned. Let's all make an effort to make more time for them and make sure they feel appreciated while we still have them with us.

    1. Why did the author refer to her parents' visit?
A.Her parents bought a special gift for her.
B.She was longing for her parents' coming.
C.She overlooked her parents getting old.
D.Her parents seldom came to her house.
    2. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A.The author has raised her kids on her own.
B.The author hardly pays a visit to her parents.
C.The author has a poor relationship with her kids.
D.The author felt guilty while watching her parents.
    3. What does the author want to do in the future?
A.To get more attention from her parents.
B.To devote more time to her parents.
C.To listen to her parents' advice carefully.
D.To get a caretaker to attend her parents.
    4. Which is the proper title for the passage?
A.Aging Is Really a Fact We Have to Accept
B.Learn More from Parents While They Are Clear
C.Love Your Parents Before They Get Too Old
D.Accompany Your Parents Before It's Too Late

    D

Every festival has its own meaning. Labor Day, for example, celebrates the value of hard work. Thanksgiving is about showing thanks to people around you. And Valentines’ Day is a time when you express love to your loved ones. But somehow it now seems that all festivals we just care about one thing—shopping. And that can be a big problem.

“In a way, over -consumption(过度消费) is the mother of all our environmental problems” Kalle Lasn once told CNN. Lasn is the organizer of Buy Nothing Day, a day set up in Canada in 1992 to fight against unhealthy spending habits, and has now become an international event. It’s held on the day, which is known as Black Fridny—a famous shopping day in the US and Canada. You can see the irony(讽刺)here.

Even though the idea of Buy Nothing Day was brought up 26 years ago, we seem to need it now more than ever. It’s just as Lasn said, all the different kinds of pollution in our lives today: bad air quality, the reduction of forest area, endangered animal species, and plastic bags found in the ocean—seem to be the same cause: over-consumption.

The latest example is the Singles’ Day shopping craze of Nov 1l, which saw a new sales record. But as Nie Li, a campaigner at Greenpeace, told Reuters. “Record-setting over-consumption means record-setting waste. ” And it was reported that last year the Singles’ Day packages left more than 160,000 tons of waste, including plastic and cardboard. The Collins dictionary has also just named “single-use” its Word of the Year, pointing out the problem that there’re too many things we tow out after only using them once.

So, Buy Nothing Day might only be here for one day a year, but it’s not just to remind us to a break from shopping on that day, but to change our lifestyle completely, focusing on fun “with people we care about” rather than wasting money on useless things.

32What’s the authors purpose of writing the first paragraph?

ATo express the people's love for all festivals.

BTo talk about the meaning of the festivals.

CTo appreciate the value of the festivals.

DTo bring out the topic of the passage.

33Why did Kalle Lasn organize Buy Nothing Day?

ATo help people save money.     BTo cut the cost for daily life.

CTo prevent over-consumption.  DTo set up a new sales record.

34What's Nie Li’s attitude towards the shopping craze?

    AOpposed   BSupportive.   CUnknown.  DNeutral

35What can be a suitable title for the passage?

ACreating a New Lifestyle        BBuy Nothing Day

CFestivals Around the World        DA Change in People’s Life

    第二节5小题每小题2满分10

    根据短文内容从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

    Forgiveness

To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.

     36 Try the following steps:

Calm yourself. 37 You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure:a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.

Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. 38 Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.

Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who caused you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.

39 If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.

Don’t forget to forgive yourself. 40 But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.

    A. Why should you forgive?

    B. How should you start to forgive?

    C. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.

    D. Try to see things from your offender’s angle.

    E. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.

    F. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.

    G. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.
