When Simon Cane was- in the second grade, he began learning about all the ways humans have an impact on the environment and really took those classroom lessons to heart in a way that set him apart from his schoolmates at his elementary school, P. S. 81, in the Bronx. “He told me we drove too much and made too much pollution,” his dad, Jonathan Cane, told Runner's World. So Simon convinced his parents to start hanging their clothes to dry, taking the stairs instead of elevators, and other “green” measures.
“For much of kindergarten and first grade I rode my bike to Simon's school with him on the back,” Jonathan said. “We had a lot of fun being outdoors. We'd stop to give our dog treats and generally enjoyed it.” As Simon got bigger, though, it wasn't practical for him to ride on his father 's back, but it also didn't make sense to ride together — both because of safety concerns and because there was no place to put away Simon's bike. So, most of the time they drove the 1.5 miles to school.
But in 2019, when Simon was going into third grade, the 8-year-old came up with a new way to help the planet: running the 1. 5 miles to P.S.81. And Jonathan promised his son he'd join him for as long as he wanted.

Self-driving cars are just around the corner. Such vehicles will make getting from one place to another safer and less stressful. They also could cut down on traffic，reduce pollution and limit accidents. But how should driverless cars handle emergencies? People disagree on the answer. And that might put the brakes on this technology, a new study concludes.
To understand the challenge, imagine a car that suddenly meets some pedestrians in the road. Even with braking, it's too late to avoid a crash. So the car's artificial intelligence must decide whether to swerve(急转弯). To save the pedestrians, should the car swerve off the road or swerve into oncoming traffic? What if such options would likely kill the car's passengers?
Researchers used online surveys to study people's attitudes about such situations with driverless cars. Survey participants mostly agreed that driverless cars should be designed to protect the most people. That included swerving into walls (or otherwise sacrificing their passengers) to save a larger number of pedestrians. But there is a hitch(困境).Those same surveyed people want to ride in cars that protect passengers at all costs -even if the pedestrians would now end up dying. Jean Bonnefon is a psychologist at the Toulouse School of Economics in France. He and his colleagues reported their findings in Science.
“Autonomous cars can completely change transportation”, says study coauthor Iyad Rahwan. But, he adds, this new technology creates a moral dilemma that could slow its acceptance.
Makers of driverless cars are in a tough spot, Bonnefon's group warns. Most buyers would want their car to be programmed to protect them in preference to other people. However, regulations might one day instruct that cars must act for the greater good. That would mean saving the most people. But the scientists think rules like this could drive away buyers. If so, all the potential benefits of driverless cars would be lost.
Compromises might be possible, Kurt Gray says. He is a psychologist at the University of North Carolina. He thinks that even if all driverless cars are programmed to protect their passengers in emergencies, traffic accidents will decrease. Those vehicles might be dangerous to pedestrians on rare occasions. But they “won't speed, won't drive drunk and won't text while driving, which would be a win for society.”

Israeli company Watergen has produced an appliance that can generate(生成) clean, drinkable water out of air. The device, called GENNY, is small enough to be used in a home or office but can generate up to 30 liters of water a day.
GENNY takes air in and passes through a filter (过滤器) to remove dust and dirt. The filter is powerful enough to work with high air pollution. The air is directed through GENius, a heating and cooling process which causes water in the air to condense(凝结). This water is then passed through several more filters and minerals are added to improve the flavor of the water. Finally, the water is stored in a tank where it is continually circulated to keep it fresh. Therefore, the water produced by GENNY is often of a higher quality than water running through filtration systems attached to the city's water lines.
The technology of GENius is much better than other technologies that generate water from air. It produces four to five times more water per kilowatt-hour. Watergen has other products that use this same technology on a larger scale, the largest of which can produce up to 5,000 liters of water per day.
As an added bonus, during the water generation process, GENNY can emit clean air which is healthier for people to breathe.
At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, GENNY was named the Energy Efficient Product of the Year. The award series recognize the world's top high-tech home products.
Last year, Watergen's large-scale products were donated to authorities in Brazil, Vietnam and India. They also assisted rescue and recovery efforts during the 2018 California wildfires and provided clean, safe water for the residents of Texas and Florida in the aftermath of the devastation caused by hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
Watergen also seeks to help protect the environment by reducing waste generated by plastic water bottles. People are called upon to put the water from GEENY into reusable bottles so that plastic ones don't get used and thrown away.

M: Well ... It started in the 1960s.He says he was on a train that came off the tracks and crashed into a river — he survived but the other 17 people died!
W: Lucky.
M: Frane did break his arm, though. Anyway, the next year he was flying on a small plane, which also crashed. Just as it was about to crash, one of the doors opened— the article says it had a fault — and he was sucked out. He escaped unhurt but nobody on the plane survived.
W: That's unbelievable!
M: I know. Then a few years later, Frane was in a bus accident. There was heavy rain and the bus lost control on the wet road and crashed into a river. He survived, although 20 people drowned. Then Frane was in a car that caught fire while he was driving it on the motorway. He managed to get out with seconds to spare before the fuel tank exploded.
W: I don't know whether he's unlucky or extremely lucky, but I don't think I ever want to travel with this guy.

W: About two years ago I went with my class on our first school trip— five days in Paris! There were about thirty of us and four teachers. We all went in one big coach from our school in London. The teachers told us to be at school at four thirty in the morning. Everyone was there on time, but the coach didn't arrive until five o'clock and we didn't leave until five thirty! We were very cold and tired.
Anyway, the coach was very comfortable and we watched a DVD and listened to some music on the journey. We had some sandwiches and drinks with us, so we went straight to Paris without stopping. The hotel was very old, but our room was nice and the bed was great! I shared the room with three other girls.
When we went shopping I tried to practice my French a few times but sometimes I didn't know the right words and spoke in English instead! The shops were great —I bought lots of presents, such as a dress for my mother, a bag for my dad and a T-shirt for my little sister!
I think what I enjoyed most was the boat trip. I took lots of photos of my friends and the wonderful art galleries. I was sad to leave Paris. I had a lovely time there.
