When I was a young teen, I hated the idea of people looking at my body when we exercised together, mainly due to not being slim. So, I would exercise-but not out of enjoyment, but only to lose weight. I got into spells of going to the gym several times a week but I could never really truly get into it or keep it up for longer than a few weeks. In retrospect(回顾), I realize now that the purpose was largely coming from the wrong place. I had always been taught that the main reason for exercise was losing weight, even in those PE classes. If you weren’t good at sport and physical activity, why else would you possibly be taking part? The idea that you might want to exercise to benefit both your physical and more importantly, mental health, wasn’t even tangible(有形的)or something I ever really thought of until last year. But when the first lockdown started and I had more time to do things, I decided to try.
I tried to hold the belief that I was doing this to improve my physical and mental health, not to lose weight and get thinner, which spurred me to learn to change my point of view and start to develop a newfound love of exercise. Running allows me to clear my head-something I’d heard so often before but soon realized its truth for myself. I can take in all of my surroundings, perking up particularly whenever I see a dog, while I concentrate on the world I find in my headphones-podcasts, radio stations and sometimes just non-stop bangers.
More than half a year after I first laced up my trainers, I can comfortably run now without stopping for longer than I ever could have imagined. I have absolutely no desire to ever run a marathon, but that’s fine! I am pretty slow but I can run and my pace continues to get better. Although I always believed I wasn’t good at sport and exercise, it doesn’t mean I couldn’t do it at all. Although I haven’t really lost any weight since I started running, I feel absolutely healthier and stronger within myself. I feel more capable and confident in what I and my body can do and have started to love myself so much more. It’s also been helped by my decision to unfollow influencers who were increasingly promoting unnecessary weight loss, replacing them largely with bloggers with bodies that looked more like my own and wearing the clothes I really wanted to wear and finally started to believe I could.
4. What did the author think of exercise when she was young?
A. It was a way to kill time.
B. It was a means of becoming slim.
C. It was a distraction from suffering mental health.
D. It could benefit health both physically and mentally.
5. What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Advised. B. Stopped. C. Encouraged. D. Permitted.
6. What change did the author make after taking up running?
A. She lost some weight successfully.
B. She became more confident in her body.
C. She was influenced by weight loss products.
D. She became thin enough to wear the clothes she wanted.
7. What type of writing does the passage adopt?
A. Narration. B. Argumentation. C. Description. D. Exposition.
C
Refrigerating meat slows the growth of bacteria, but does not stop it as freezing does. For this reason, refrigerated meat is safe to eat for a significantly shorter amount of time than frozen meat. The temperature range from 40°F to 140°F (4.4℃ to 60℃)is referred to as the “Danger Zone” by food safety experts. It is in this "zone" that bacteria increase, nearly doubling in a mere 20 minutes. A home refrigerator should be set at 40°F or colder to keep meat safe for the maximum amount of time. It is important to note that there are two different groups of bacteria that affect refrigerated meat. The first, pathogenic bacteria, make us sick, while the second, spoilage bacteria, make our food go bad and stink up our fridges. By sight, smell and taste, you cannot identify whether a meat is harboring pathogenic bacteria, unlike meat affected by spoilage bacteria.
In a refrigerated state, spoilage bacteria can grow. This is proven by the fact that all food in a refrigerator eventually spoils. Spoiled food won’t make you sick-it might taste bad, but unless it has pathogenic bacteria, your digestive system is in the clear. Unrefrigerated meat, if left out on the counter for a few hours, might smell and look fine, but may be full of pathogenic bacteria. During a power-cut, food stored in a refrigerator that rises in temperature to over 40°F for more than two hours should be removed. Also, due to temperature change, don’t store meat on the door. It is important to maintain your refrigerator’s temperature by keeping the door closed as much as possible.
As always, follow proper cooking instructions when preparing any meat to kill any potentially harmful bacteria. The following is a list of how long certain refrigerated meats will be safe to eat: cooked leftovers, four days; raw eggs, three to five weeks; hard boiled eggs, one week; salads, such as egg, macaroni, potato or tuna, three to five days; ham, three to seven days; hot dogs, one week if opened, two weeks if unopened; fresh fish/shellfish, one to two days.
8. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?
A. Both groups of bacteria can make us sick.
B. Putting meat in refrigerators can stop the growth of bacteria.
C. It is safe to put meat in refrigerators with the temperature of 10℃.
D. It is easier to find out whether meat with spoilage bacteria goes bad.
9. What effect could you possibly get if you eat spoiled food?
A. You could get food poisoning. B. You may have a bad taste experience.
C. You may get a digestive system disease. D. You could get infected by pathogenic bacteria.
10. What should you do to kill the bacteria when cooking meat?
A. Cook it according to instructions.
B. Wash the meat over and over again.
C. Leave the meat on the counter for a while.
D. Put the meat into a refrigerator before cooking.
11. How long is refrigerated potato salad safe to eat?
A. Ten days. B. A week. C. Three to five days. D. Two weeks.
D
How did life come about on Earth? Did it appear in a flash of light? Well, not exactly. A study published in the journal Nature Communications in March shows that lightning may have played a significant role in the creation of life on Earth.
When lightning hits sand, soil or stone, it melts the materials into a glassy material called fulgurite(闪电熔岩). When a group of researchers examined a particular fulgurite, they found a thick, tree-root-like structure extending down about a foot and a half (about 0.46 meters). "It was just entirely made of glass and had burned soil on the outside of it." said Benjamin Hess, study author and graduate student at Yale University, US.
But what Hess and his colleagues at the University of Leeds, UK, found inside the fulgurite was even more impressive. According to Science News, "By firing X rays and electrons(电子)at the fulgurite, and observing how those beams(光线)interacted with the material, the researchers were able to probe(探测) its composition." They discovered that the fulgurite contained schreibersite(磷铁石), a phosphorus(磷)mineral that can be dissolved in water. Phosphorus is essential for the formation of DNA and cell mem branes (薄膜), as well as the formation of teeth and bones in humans, according to the website Phys. org.
It has long been thought that meteorites(陨石)were responsible for delivering this element to Earth. However, life began between billion years ago when fewer meteorites were impacting Earth, reported CNN. Lightning was more prevalent(普遍的)on early Earth because there was more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide contributes to the global temperature, and a higher global temperature causes more frequent and intense thunderstorms, Hess said.
12. What is the feature of fulgurite according to the passage?
A. Its main component is glass. B. It is from outer space.
C. It is 0.46 meters in length. D. It is made of sand, soil and stone.
13. Which of the following probably contributes to the creation of life on Earth?
A. Burned soil. B. Electrons. C. Phosphorus. D. Meteorites.
14. What can be indicated from the passage?
A. Meteorites did not appear as early as lightning.
B. Meteorites are unable to generate schreibersite.
C. Meteorites cannot create carbon dioxide, which is essential to human life.
D. Meteor strikes occurred less frequently than lightning at the time when life was formed.
15. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Life from Lightening B. Origin of Life on Earth
C. Lightening or Meteorites D. Importance of Phosphorus
