Chinese elements highlighted at Olympic closing ceremony
The curtains came down on the closing ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games Sunday night at Bird's Nest in Beijing. During the ceremony, many Chinese cultural elements were put into the design of the grand show, expressing some Chinese romance. They became the highlights of the closing ceremony and let's take a look.
    Festival lanterns
The closing ceremony began with a large snowflake torch appearing in the sky, echoing the moment from the opening ceremony. Then accompanied by cheerful music, children hung traditional Chinese festive lanterns, lighting up the emblem of the Winter Olympics, which originated from the Chinese character for winter, "dong".
    Chinese knot
The 12 Chinese zodiac(生肖)-themed ice cars created an outline of a Chinese knot with its wheel trails. And then it was enlarged, and an enormous "Chinese knot" was presented using digital AR technology. Each ribbon could be clearly seen, and all of the ribbons twisted together, symbolizing unity and a good fortune.
    Fish and riches
During the closing ceremony, the Malanhua Children's Choir from a mountainous area of Fuping county in Hebei province performed again, this time with different clothes. The Chinese paper-cut of double fish was seen on their clothes, meaning "rich and have a surplus in the next year" in Chinese culture.
    Willow(柳树) branch for farewell
In ancient times, Chinese people broke a willow branch and gave it to their friends, family or relatives when seeing them off, as willow sounds like "stay" in Mandarin. Willow branches appeared in the closing ceremony, expressing Chinese people's hospitality and bidding farewell to the world guests.
    21. Which of the flowing is inspired by the Chinese character “dong”?
    A. Festive lanterns. B. A snowflake torch.
    C. The emblem. D. Cheerful music.
    22. What characteristic did “Chinese knot” and “Fish and riches” share?
    A. Both employed AR technology. B. Both symbolized a wealthy life.
    C. Both were created by ice cars. D. Both were performed by children.
    23. Which one can be adopted as a symbol of departure ?
    A. Festive lanterns. B. Chinese knot.
    C. Fish and riches. D. Willow branch.

My boss recently asked me, "Do you know why I hired you? Because you didn't sell yourself. You didn't tell me, 'Look how experienced I am.' You emailed me and said, 'I researched your website and saw how many amazing vets (兽医) you have and I want to learn from them,' and that's why I hired you. You showed vulnerability."
So what is vulnerability? For me, vulnerability means putting your fear of embarrassment aside and allowing personal growth. I believe vulnerability is a pathway to success. Vulnerability has traditionally been viewed as a weakness in the workplace. The very thought of exposing your weaknesses is terrifying. However, we can change the views surrounding it. I'm talking about the vulnerability that strengthens courage and leads to more success as a vet.
After graduation, I started working in a clinic where I thought I would have support. However, I didn't have the help I required. I quickly became exhausted. Within 18 months, I didn't want to be a vet anymore.
During this period, I realized without the support I wanted I was potentially making mistakes I wasn't even aware of. Was I treating patients effectively? I wouldn't know, because I had no one to ask for help.
I decided to be vulnerable. I accepted that I was unhappy, living with poor mental health and lacking important knowledge. I wanted to find somewhere I'd be able to continue building my knowledge, not as an average vet, but as a good one. After two and a half years working as a vet, I have finally found a place where I get the support I need. My point is: don't stay where you are unhappy. Be vulnerable and have the courage to accept when you are unhappy. Find somewhere that will support you and push you to do better.
Vulnerability shouldn't be considered a weakness because it allows personal growth. Vulnerability should be viewed as a strength. To be vulnerable allows you to show people that you cannot always be perfect. Being vulnerable is not a liability (麻烦的事) in the workplace. It is the ability to show people that you are human.
    24. Why did the author's boss hire her?
    A. She highly recommended herself. B. She had adequate experience.
    C. She was honest about her weakness. D. She did research about the company.
    25. How does the author personally view vulnerability?
    A. It leads to embarrassment. B. It helps with individual development.
    C. It is a weakness in the workplace. D. It is terrifying to expose your vulnerability.
    26. What do paragraphs 3-5 mainly talk about?
    A. Why the author quit her previous job.
    B. What made the author feel vulnerable.
    C. How the author got rid of her vulnerability.
    D. Why the author decided to show her vulnerability.
    27. What can we conclude about vulnerability from the last paragraph?
    A. It inspires people to be perfect.
    B. It is normal for people to feel vulnerable.
    C. It allows people to discover their strength.
    D. It can cause people trouble in the workplace.
    C
A TRAIN operator from Britain has made travelling more enjoyable—by hosting live yoga classes during journeys.
Heathrow Express passengers travelling on October 13 were treated to sessions with yoga influencer Celest Pereira, who has developed a 12-minute seat-yoga and meditation session to help travellers relax. The class has been developed so travellers of all ages and abilities can perform the exercises safely from their seats—and it’s believed to be the first time a yoga class has taken place on a moving train and it received fabulous feedbacks.
To get passengers in the right stage of mind, the “Tranquil Train” carriage hosting the sessions was decorated with fresh eucalyptus(桉树叶) and lavender(薰衣草) to fill the carriage with calming fragrances, as a consequence of which the passengers might feel much more light-hearted.
The initiative was launched after a study also conducted by Heathrow Express found more than half of public transport users find travel stressful following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Celest Pereira said, “Travelling can get people very unsettled. As there’s lots going on, lots of things to think about, and it’s very deadline driven so it can be a very intense experience.” By hosting these classes we’re hoping to relieve those pressures and help passengers be in the present moment, feel less overwhelmed and relieve any muscle tension. Moreover, these kind of classes are likely to produce prized memories.
The surveyed adults also identified the most frustrating aspects of travel—including delayed departures, big crowds, noisy environment as well as dull waits. They revealed that more quiet carriages, more reserved seats, free snacks or refreshments plus reserved places for luggage and onboard entertainment contributed to taking mind off worrying things. These researches will make a big difference to a better travel experience.
    28. What inspired Heathrow Express to host live yoga class during journeys?
    A. Yoga classes enjoy popularity in public transport.
    B. The calming atmosphere in carriages makes people dance.
    C. Public transport users often feel lighthearted when traveling.
    D. Over half of public transport users surveyed find travelling stressful.
    29. What does the underlined word “overwhelmed” in paragraph 5 mean?
    A. Overdue. B. Overjoyed.
    C. Overcome. D. Overestimated.
    30. Which of the following can reduce people’s worry according to the study?
    A. The entertainment on the train. B. Lower noise in the carriages.
    C. Seats free of charge. D.Overcrowded departures.
    31. Which can be the best title for the text?
    A. Elements to people’s worry aboard B. Unsettling travels and live yoga classes
    C. Ways to release traveler’s concerns D. Live anti-pressure yoga classes aboard

    D
Although it is a business not many are aware of, sidewalk robots are set to become an industry with annual sales of $ 1bn within a decade, estimates IDTechEx, a British firm of analysts. These four- or six-wheeled autonomous machines, usually the size of a suitcase, are already delivering groceries and other goods in America, China and Europe.
That puts them ahead of many driverless cars, buses and lorries being developed. Those bigger vehicles are held back not by technology but regulation, says Zehao Li of IDTechEx. This means having a “safety driver” on board ready to take over if there is a problem, which is hardly labor-saving.
For these larger vehicles regulators want to see safety systems thoroughly proved. But there are legal hurdles, too. In January Britain’s Law Commission, which reviews legislation, recommended that it should not be the person in the driver’s seat who faces appeals if a vehicle in autonomous mode crashes, but the manufacturer behind it.
Meanwhile sidewalk robots are getting on with the job. Typically, these robots carry a few bags of groceries using a variety of sensors, including cameras, radar and GPS to navigate and avoid obstacles and people. Their progress can be monitored on a phone app, which also unlocks them for goods to be retrieved (检索). As they are small, move slowly and are “telemonitored” by people in a control room who can take over, authorities seem more willing to give them a green light.
Robotic versions which operate on roads are also appearing. Nuro,a Silicon Valley firm, makes one about the size of a small car that can carry 24 bags of groceries. It has frozen and heated cabinets for food and drinks. Udelv, also a Californian firm, is developing a larger type called Transporter to operate at highway speeds. Being much further along the road in earning their keep, these delivery bots are helping to pave the way for the time when bigger autonomous vehicles can join them.
    32. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?
    A. Sidewalk robots are hardly accepted.
    B. Sidewalk robots have made 1bn sales so far.
    C. Sidewalk robots are a promising business.
    D. Sidewalk robots resemble a suitcase.
    33. Which is a rule for bigger driverless vehicles?
    A. They should develop with sidewalk robots.
    B. They should be accompanied by a driver.
    C. They should be labor-saving.
    D. They should be problem-solving.
    34. Who is to blame in auto-mode accidents by Britain’s Law Commission?
    A. The regulators. B. The legal systems.
    C. The driver. D. The manufacturer.
    35. What is the purpose of the article?
    A. To applaud delivery bots.
    B. To further develop delivery bots.
    C. To show the technology behind delivery bots.
    D. To pave the way for autonomous vehicles.

"Don't take many English courses; they won't help you get a decent job.""Sign up for management classes, so you'll be ready to join the family business when you graduate." Many of us have heard suggestions like these put forward by parents or others close to us.____36____
The answer is yes. Such comments often seem quite reasonable. However, with regard to finding a correct path of career, it relates to decisions you should make.____37____
One of the worst reasons to follow a particular path in life is that other people want you to. Decisions that affect your life should be your decisions — decisions you make after you've considered various alternatives and chosen the path that suits you best.
____38____For instance, your parents do have their own unique experiences that may make their advice helpful, and having participated in a great deal of your personal history, they may have a clear view of your strengths and weaknesses.____39____They may still see you as a child, in need of care and protection. Or they may see only your strengths. Or, in some unfortunate cases, they may focus only on your flaws and shortcomings.
For the whole life, we are always in the wandering and hesitation.____40____Unless you've already determined to be their faithful audience, you shouldn't worry too much about letting others control your actions. Ultimately, though, you can assure that your own judgments will lead your way.
    A. Should we follow the path that they choose for us?
    B. You are the one who must live with their consequences.
    C. Should suggestions like these be taken with caution?
    D. A person's journey through life might be seen as a series of decisions.
    E. Making your own decisions does not mean that you should ignore the suggestions of others.
    F. People will always be giving you advice on your path.
    G. Still, their views are not necessarily accurate.

    写作:
Yaping Wang , the first female astronaut who performed spacewalk by Shenzhou XIII, deserves our highest respect for her persistence in the decade-long arduous training. Never did she say never and ultimately she lived her space dream.
How can we young people learn from Yaping, especially her perseverance, resilience and diligence? Firstly, when failing in exams, we need to reflect on our weak points and do countless exercise rather than drown ourselves in sorrow or disappointment. Regarding difficulties we meet in our daily life, bouncing back from low spirits and quickly regaining our composure as Yaping Wang did definitely count.

    Text 1
M: So, you’re here to sign up for a gym membership today? Can I have your name?
W: Karyn. That’s with a Y, not an E. My last name is Gass, with two S’s. (1)
    Text 2
M: It looks like it should be a nice day, but it’s still cold outside.
W: At least it’s not raining. The weather forecast says the sun will come out of hiding in the afternoon. (2)
    Text 3
M: I spent too much time picking a topic to write about. Now, I only have two days left to write my paper!
W: Hey, Jake, I’ll help you out. You write a section, and I’ll polish it right away. (3)
    Text 4
W: I made your favorite dish tonight: seashell noodles. How much meat sauce would you like?
M: Oh, not too much, please. I love this food, but the doctor told me to eat less meat and more vegetables. (4)
    Text 5
M: There was a special discount at the barber’s today. I got my hair cut for half off. Do you like it?
W: Oh, no! It looks like the barber cut half your hair off! (5)
    Text 6
W: Look at this Monet painting! It is my favorite piece. The gently flowing river, the water lilies, the bridge…it looks like such a secret and magical garden.
    M: I agree.
    W: What’s your favorite painting?
M: It’s not here at the Chicago Museum of Art. (6) It’s in a museum in China. I studied some of Lang Shining’s works in my art history class during college. (7) He was a court painter for over 50 years during the Qing dynasty. Among the top 10 masterpieces of traditional Chinese painting, there’s a painting called Baijun Tu or One Hundred Horses. It was painted by him. (7) Can you believe it, though — he was an Italian!
    W: Wow, it is amazing.
    Text 7
M: Hello? Mom, is that you?
W: It’s me, Brian. How is everything going? Have you found a job yet?
M: Umm…no, not yet. I’m still looking. I’ve been getting some interviews, though.
W: That’s good, dear. Have you heard back from the university?
M: Uh…no, not yet, Mom. It might take them a while to get through all of the applications. (8) Mine was probably the last one they received.
W: Oh, no! You didn’t send it in at the last minute again, did you?
M: Actually, I got it in 45 minutes before the deadline! (8)
W: Am I supposed to be impressed? You said you had 15 days to get it done!
M: Well, you know me, Mom! I can’t be rushed! (9)
W: Just like your father. (9) I should be used to it by now! I only hope you’ll be happy forever, son.
    M: Thanks, Mom.
    Text 8
W: Mr. Adams, are you able to take over Mr. Moore’s classroom today? He’s out sick, (10) and our regular substitute teacher just got hired in another district. We haven’t figured out how to replace him, yet.
M: I’ll be happy to do it, Mrs. Garcia. Is he only teaching physics this term?
W: No… Some teachers quit recently, so we had to change some schedules. Mr. Moore still teaches three physics classes, but he also has a first-period chemistry class and a fifth-period World History class.
M: I see. Well, I should be able to handle everything except for the history class. I really don’t know much about that subject. (11)
W: Don’t worry! Mr. Moore is very organized. His lesson plan for the day is very clear and simple. All you need to do is have the students read the next chapter in the book. Then, there is a quiz to pass out. You should give them 20 minutes to complete it. At the end of the class, you give the students certain homework questions from the book. (12)
    M: That sounds easy enough!
    Text 9 (第13题为总结题)
M: I am bored. Do you want to play a game?
W: Sure. What type of game do you want to play? There are only two of us, and I don’t have any cards or board games.
M: That doesn’t matter. We can just ask each other skill-testing questions.
W: Oh, I see. You mean to see who is smarter?
M: Exactly. I ask you a question, and then you ask me one. Then we keep scoring to see how many we get right.
    W: All right. Let’s go.
M: I’ll go first. Which country has the highest mountain? (14) Is it in China, India, or Pakistan?
W: Well, I don’t think it’s Pakistan, so that leaves China and India. And I think Mount Everest is the highest, which is in China…so I’ll say that. India can’t be right.
M: Correct. Now it’s your turn.
W: Which sport is widely believed to be the most dangerous? (15) Is it mountain climbing, skydiving, or race-car driving?
M: Oh, I know this one…it’s mountain climbing. No, wait! It’s definitely race-car driving!
W: I’m sorry, that is incorrect. The right answer is skydiving. (15)
M: No way. All right, last question. What color is a polar bear’s skin? Black, pink, or white?
W: Hold on, I dropped something under the table… I got it! The answer is white.
M: No fair! I saw you look at your phone! You didn’t play by the rules! (16)
    Text 10 (第17题为总结题)

(19)I have been so lucky to have worked with so many good people.
