Breakthrough or bad science?
It's a long been a scientific dream: to give people a special vaccine(疫苗)before birth to prevent them from getting terrible illnesses. Gene editing(基因编辑)is one way in which we could do this. But this method has also created some controversy(争议).
In an online video posted on Nov 26, He Jiankui, a researcher at the Southern University of Science and Technology, said that he had helped to make the world’s first genetically edited babies.
The babies are twin girls who were born in November. Their father had HIV. The twins’ genes were edited in order to prevent them from being infected(感染)by the HIV virus.
He said he chose to do this because HIV is widespread in China. “I feel such a strong responsibility not only to be the first to do this, but also to set an example,” He told AP.But his actions raised many questions. Although gene editing may help to prevent disease, many people are wondering if it is safe and ethical(道德的)to use it on humans.
Some believe that gene editing could benefit HIV patients. HIV is “a major and growing public health threat(威胁),” according to Harvard Medical School genetics professor George Church. Using gene editing for HIV is “justifiable(无可厚非),” Church told AP.However, others think that gene editing is still in its experimental stages and could result in problems later in life, including the development of cancer, Julian Savulescu from the University of Oxford told BBC News.Besides, the Ministry of Science and Technology of China has worked with other departments to investigate He’s project. In an open letter released on Nov 27, 140 Chinese HIV/AIDS researchers described the research as “unethical”. They questioned the need for He’s project.
Others fear that some wealthy people might use gene editing technology to make “designer babies”. It would give parents the ability to choose everything from their baby’s eye color to their intelligence.“You could find wealthy parents buying the latest ‘upgrades’ for their children, leading to even greater inequality than we already live with,” Marcy Darnovsky, director of the San Francisco Center for Genetics, told BBC News.
32. What do we know about He Jiankui?
A. He was the first person to edit genes.
B. He infected twins with HIV when he edited their genes.
C. He made the world’s first genetically edited babies.
D. He was the first person whose genes were edited.
33.Who agreed that gene editing could be helpful for HIV patients?
A.George Church. B. Julian Savulescu.
C. Marcy Darnovsky. D. Chinese researchers.
34. Julian Savulescu said gne editing _______.
A.can cure diseases B.may cause unexpected mutations
C.will raise ethical questions D.may lead to greater inequality
35. According to the story, we know that gene editing is ________.
A.good for everyone B.good for wealthy people
C.still controversial D.justifiable to use
D
Sunshine might be healthier than most people think, outweighing the risk of skin cancer. British doctors suggested last week and ran straight into a storm. The four researchers at Bristol University in western England were accused of weakening years of campaigning to warn people of the dangers of too much sun. Experts agree exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays (紫外线) increases the risk of skin cancer and accelerates the signs of aging. But in the British Medical Journal, the Bristol team led by Andrew Ness wrote, “There is evidence that the potential benefits of exposure to sunlight may outweigh the widely publicized adverse effects on the incidence of skin cancer.”
Vitamin D, made in the body in reaction to sunlight, prevented rickets (软骨病) in children and was associated with a protective effect against heart disease.
Sunshine was also useful for treating certain skin conditions and there was evidence that it reduced the incidence of multiple sclerosis (硬化症). There was also the “feel good effect of lying or sitting in the sun.” The researchers said it was too early to advise people to spend more time in the sun, but suggested the basis of the current advice to cover up should be reviewed.
“Perhaps, while we await the conclusions of such formal analyses, those of us who enjoy spending time in the sun can rest assured that the chance that we will be one of the people dying from the sun is small.” they added.
Their article was strongly criticized by health campaigners who claimed it was unbalanced and not backed by scientific evidence. Britain’s Health Education Authority said skin cancer was the most common form of cancer in the country, with more than 50,000 new cases diagnosed each year and more than 2,000 people dying from the disease. It said treatment almost always required surgery and almost 50 per cent of cases were fatal. The authority’s skin cancer campaign manager Christopher New said, “We are very disappointed with this controversial article. It doesn’t have enough supporting evidence and runs the risk of undoing many years of good health education.”
37.When the British doctors pointed out that London-sunshine might be healthier than most people think, they _____________.
A.began to look for evidence to support their statement
B.met strong opposition from people sticking to traditional idea about sunshine
C.found that a lot of people were holding the same idea
D.wanted to tell us that they were not afraid of ultraviolet rays
38.Andrew Ness mentioned the following benefits except that ____.
A.sunshine helps to make Vitamin D, which prevented rickets in children
B.sunshine can reduce the probability of multiple sclerosis
C.sunshine make one’s skin healthier
D.sitting in the sun makes one feel good
39.The underline word “adverse” can be best replaced by ____.
A.harmful B.beneficial C.slight D.amazing
40. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The Bristol team advised people to spend more time in the sun.
B.The sun’s ultraviolet rays are the only factor that causes skin cancer.
C.Health campaigner blamed the four researchers for their new idea about the effect of sunshine on skin.
D.Most of the skin diseases are fatal.

An Event of Imagination
The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth.
On 17 July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth's atmosphere with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the seabed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned.
Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina.
Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won't escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, and temperature around the world falls to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won't be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million remain alive.
Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs (恐龙) were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn't live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?
Reasons | Results |

Have you heard about the periodic table ( 元素周期表) lately? Well, there’s some big news about this special table, but first, remember that the periodic table is used to organize all the elements, or things that make u 66 our world.
Elements are all around us. Iron is one of the commonest elements found within the Earth. You probably know the element oxygen. It is the element that we b 67 in all the time. And elements can combine (结合) to make new things l 68 H2O.
This is hydrogen and oxygen put together, also known as
w 69 ! Learning about these things helps us better understand the world we live in. But have you ever noticed something missing in the periodic table? There were already 114 elements. But the seventh row of the table was not f 70 , until now! In December, scientists from IUPAC(国际理论与应用化学联合会) found the f 71 elements that were missing. They are elements 113, 115, 117 and 118.
“To scientists, this is of greater v 72 than an Olympic gold medal, ”Ryoji Noyori, a Nobel honored chemist, told the Guardian.
The new elements are heavy metals and were made in l 73 . These kinds of elements can’t be found in nature. Scientists are still looking for ways to use these elements, and other elements in the eighth row, in our daily lives.
Scientists have been working on this for 10 years, but the work is not done. Now they will p 74 to look for “element 119 and beyond”. But for now, be careful when you read your C 75 books because the periodic table might be outdated.
