Dearest Kitty,
My own worries stopped because of a break-in. Maybe I’m making you feel bored with all my break-ins, but what can I do when burglars take such pleasure in getting into Gies & Go.? This is even worse than the last one in July 1943.
Last night at 7:30, Mr. Van Daan was going to Mr Kugler’s office as usual when he saw that both the glass door and the office door were open. He was surprised, but he went on through and was even more surprised to see that there was a terrible mess in the front office.
“There’s been a burglary,” he thought to himself. But just to make sure, he went downstairs to the front door, checked the lock and found everything closed. Early this morning Peter knocked at our door to tell us that the front door was wide open. Mr. Van Daan told us his discoveries of the night before, and we were very worried.
The only possibility is that the burglar must have had a key which can open any door, since there were no signs of a forced opening of doors. If not, who could have our key? Why didn’t the burglar go to the warehouse (仓库)? Was it one of our own warehouse workers, and will he tell somebody else since he’s heard Mr. Van Daan and maybe even seen him?
It is really terrible since we don’t know whether the burglar will try and get in again. Or was he so scared when he heard someone else in the building that he’ll stay away?
Yours, Anne

My father was German, but he worked in England. He married my mother, who was English. Her family name was Robinson, so when I was born in 1632,in England, they called me Robinson, after her.
My father did well in his business and I went to a good school. He wanted me to get a good job, and live a quiet, pleasant life. But I wanted adventure and an exciting life.
"I want to be a sailor and go to sea," I told my mother and father. They were very unhappy about this.
"Please don't go." my father said, "You won't be happy you know. Sailors have a difficult and dangerous life." And because I love him, and he was unhappy, I tried to forget about the sea.
But I couldn't forget, and about a year later, I saw a friend in town. His father had a ship and my friend said to me, "we are sailing to London tomorrow. Why don't you come with us?"
On September 1st, 1651,I went to Hull, and the next day we sailed for London.
But, a few days later, there was a strong wind. The sea was rough and dangerous, and the ship went up and down. I was very ill,and was very afraid.
"Oh, I don't want to die!”I cried, "I want to live! If I live, I will go home and never go to sea again!"
The next day the wind stopped, and the sea was quiet and beautiful again.
"Well, Robinson," my friend laughed, "How do you feel now? The wind wasn't too bad."
"What!" I cried. "It was a terrible storm."
"Oh, that wasn't a storm," my friend answered, "just a little wind. Forget it, come and have a drink."
After a few drinks with my friend, I felt better. I forgot about the danger, and decided not to go home. I didn't want my friend and family to laugh at me!
I stayed in London for some time, but I still, wanted to go to the sea. So, when the captain(船长)of a ship asked me to go with him to Guinea in Africa, I agreed. And so I went to the sea for the second time.
It was a good ship, and everything went well at first, but I was very ill again. Then when we were near the Canary Islands, a Turkish pirate(海盗)ship came after us. They were famous thieves of the sea at that time. There was a long, hard fight, but when it finished, we and the ship were prisoners. The Turkish captain and his men took us to Sallee in Morocco. They wanted to sell us as slaves(奴隶)in the market. But in the end, the Turkish captain decided to keep me for himself, and took me home with him. This was a sudden and terrible change in my life. This Turkish captain was now my master.

Discharge the wastewater? NO!
The Japanese government recently decided to discharge( 排 放 ) the wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant ( 核 电 站 ) into the sea, Nikkei Asia said on April 9. The resolution is scheduled to be formally confirmed at a cabinet(内阁) meeting on April 13.

In 2011, a powerful earthquake—triggered tsunami damaged the Fukushima plant’s cooling system. Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc (TEPCO), the plant’s operator, then used water to cool down the reactor( 反应 堆 ).The water playing the cooling function, however, is contaminated with radioactive materials and has been stored in tanks(箱,罐)at the plant.
According to the cabinet, the storage tanks for wastewater are expected to reach the upper limit by autumn 2022. In late October last year, the Japanese government said it would gradually discharge wastewater into the sea. The news was immediately protested(抗议) by the people of Japan and the world. Under pressure, the Japanese
government has yet to carry out the plan.
Many experts pointed out that once the radioactive materials such as tritium(氚) in the spent nuclear water are discharged into the sea, they will accompany the ocean current and pollute many parts of the world.
In fact, there are other ways to treat nuclear wastewater, such as discharging into the atmosphere after evaporation( 蒸 发 ) and burying underground. The most direct way is to build new water storage tanks in the nuclear power plant. Analysts pointed out that in the view of the Japanese government, other ways are time—consuming, laborious and expensive, and only discharging into the sea is the most cost—effective way.

C.has decided to release the waste water pretty soon with no one against the plan.
D.will never ever discharge the water into the sea without the support of people.

A.Build new water storage tanks in the nuclear power plant.
B.Discharge it into the atmosphere after evaporation.
C.Bury it underground.
D.Discharge it into the sea directly.
40.What can we infer from the news?
A.The storage tanks for wastewater can hold by winter 2022.
B.The Japanese government planned to quickly discharge waste water into the sea.
