I’m running some 3,550 kilometers. To be more precise, this jog is mostly around my neighborhood in Ottawa. It is the distance by air to Vancouver that my friend Lucy and I are doing. If we make it, Lucy and I will get on a plane to Vancouver and compete in one of the BMO Vancouver Marathon weekend races. We may not win medals, but for sure we’ll have cake for my seventy-fifth birthday at the finish line.

The workout for big birthdays represents a big change for me. I used to hate birthdays, especially those milestone ones. No longer feeling young is horrible. As I approached my sixtieth birthday, Lucy suggested setting targets to mark milestone birthdays. “That way you are looking forward to something, not dreading it,” she pointed out.

By doing those expanding my world or demanding new skills, I feel myself growing, not shrinking. For my sixtieth, I got it into my head that I should do an Olympic distance triathlon (铁人三项赛), which turned out to be a real milestone. After over four hours on the course, I was last among the 95 competitors. But I was the oldest woman competing, so that made me first in my age category. Since then, I’ve looked on the special days as a call for trying something different. For my sixty-fifth birthday, I went to run a half marathon. And I finished seven activities that took me out of my “comfort zone” at seventy.

I’m fortunate to have celebrated so many birthdays in good health and spirits, so

whether I succeed in running to Vancouver or not, I’m grateful for the opportunity. One thing I’ve learned in taking up these challenges is that there are many possibilities for new adventures and achievements, even as we grow older. So do spend every day of every year with a definite end in view, which will release your energy and make you happy.

Adding a baby to a family can also add stress to a career. Now, a new study backs that up with some astonishing numbers: After science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals become parents, 43% of women and 23% of men switch fields, change over to part-time work, or leave the workforce entirely.

The results are based on the career paths of 629 men and 212 women who were full- time STEM workers in 2003 and became first-time parents in 2006, as compared with more than 3,000 STEM workers without children. By 2010, 78% of new fathers were still working in STEM, the vast majority full time. For new mothers, 68% were still in STEM, but only 57% worked full time.

For professionals without children, on the other hand, 84% of men and 76% of

women were predicted to still be working in STEM full time in 2010. For the new parents across all fields, 16% of women were working part-time and 15% had left the workforce, as compared with just 2% and 3% for men. These obvious differences make clear that mothers still face particular career challenges.

“The researchers have considered causes including societal expectations, women’s preferences, parenthood and unfriendly working environments. This new study suggests that parenthood does indeed play a role, but it probably acts in concert with other contributors ( 因 素 ),” says Donna Ginther, a professor at the University of Kansas. “Contained in these data is what type of company you’re working for and the climate within different fields,” she says. In other words, someone who tolerates a negative work climate before they have children may decide, when they become a parent, that the compromise is no longer worth it. But that doesn’t mean that parenthood is the root cause; it’s the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Plants: we eat them, juice them—and now it seems we can mine them too!

After a successful experiment on the island of Borneo, the botany professor Alan

Baker and a group of researchers want to introduce phytomining (harvesting minerals

from plants) as a better, partial substitute for traditional mining.

Phytomining, also known as agromining, means collecting metals from live plants. However, this can only be done with a group of plants known as “hyperaccumulators”. There are around 700 identified types worldwide, and what makes these hyperaccumulators special is that they naturally attract and absorb minerals through their roots —metals poisonous to other plants— and then store huge, pure concentrations of these minerals in their bodies. The metals can then be extracted(提取) from the plants’ sap(汁；液), oil, or sometimes even live tissue.

Baker and his colleagues see a lot of potential in phytomining. Not only can it help

meet the growing global demand for metals, but is a way of undoing some of that damage to the environment by traditional mining.

One of the biggest problems with traditional mining is that it pollutes the surrounding area. Phytomining can extract metal waste, plus planting the hyperaccumulators would regrow the deforested areas caused by mining operations. Aside from this, if phytomining is able to replace part of traditional mining, then there would be fewer instances of bad mining practices like abandoned mines, which pollute the nearby waters. Also, since phytomining provides metals that are already naturally pure, there is no need to use huge amounts of energy to purify the ore(矿石).

Phytomining has its drawbacks. Harvesting plants on a large scale is expensive today, compared to traditional mining. Besides, plants can be wiped out by diseases or

unexpected weather conditions.

However, there are many reasons to consider phytomining. After all, we need to

make sure that our planet can keep up and sustainable practices like phytomining give us the hope that our advancement doesn’t mean sacrificing Mother Earth.

How I became a good badminton player is still freshly in my mind.The first day

when I went to school, I found some of my classmates playing badminton. Amazing at how skillful they were, I made up my mind to learn from him and be good at it.
