Besides, it’s hard telling what’s in there.” “Then yu start back.” said William, handing the seedlings t Rebecca. I’ll catch up.” He ran t the dugut and stepped inside.
Rebecca tied the seedlings int her lng aprn(围裙）and began t walk. Suddenly she frze in her tracks. A huge prairie rattlesnake(响尾蛇）mved alng the river bank. It stpped right in frnt f the dugut and lay still, ciled up n the warm sunny bank. “William!” Rebecca shuted. “Dn’t cme ut!”

He turned desperate eyes tward Rebecca, then he glanced behind himself. Rebecca knew what he was thinking: “Were there mre snakes waiting in the shadwy crners f the dugut?”
Rebecca’s mind raced, trying t think f a way t get William ut f there. An idea ppped int her head. It was their nly hpe. It was risky, but it was the nly hpe. “Dn’t mve,” she said t William in a sft vice. “When r say NOW, yu run ut f there as fast as yu can.” Rebecca remved the skirt-like petticat(衬裙）frm beneath her dress, then dipped it int the river. She squeezed ut sme f the water, then climbed t the tp f the bank, directly abve the dugut’s pening.

I rang the bell, but nbdy came, s I rang and kncked again. Then I nticed there was huse number after all. A ridiculus small ne that said 63. There was a sudden thud(呯的一声) inside the apparently empty huse, and a mment later the frnt dr pened vilently.
A hded(戴兜帽的) man with a beard and blue glasses hurried past me and ran int the street.
