Laurie Horam never thought of himself as musical. At home, his dad never listened to music, while one of his boarding school teachers labelled him tone deaf. But last month he started to play the harmonica (口琴)on the streets of Bradford. People clapped, danced and threw coins into his case for the local food bank. Horam caught himself thinking. “How, at the age of 79, do I come to be playing music to people on the streets?”
The question preoccupied him, because, some years ago at a family gathering, Gavin, his eldest son, said: “You know what, Dad? It can’t be coincidental. We must have got our musical abilities from you.” Horam has three sons and they cover a range of instruments. He was surprised. “There can’t be music in me, because I can’t play! ”he said.
Eight years ago, Horam, a retired civil servant, was on his way back from a trip with his family. Gavin stopped at a music shop. He walked out and said: “Here you are. I bought this for you, Dad. It’s a harmonica. I’ll try to show you how to play a bit.”
They went to a session at their local pub. Gavin played the guitar and Horam sat in the corner with his harmonica, trying to make a sound that no one would hear. After six months, he was invited into the group. He discovered a talent for improvisation(即兴表演),responding to a note within a millisecond without batting an eyelid. “I don’t play by ear. I play by heart.” Actually, Horam says: “My harmonica plays me-how I feel, what I am, what I’ve been.”
Music has enriched life with friendship and made Horam feel “part of something much bigger” than himself. “At a time when the circle of life might be shrinking, mine is expanding,” he says. “Maybe we never know completely who we are or what we can do.”
24.Why did Horam play the harmonica on the streets of Bradford?
A.To recall the good old days.
B.To beg food from passers-by.
C.To live his childhood dream.
D.To collect money for charity.
25.What is Gavin’s attitude to his father’s musical ability?
A.Positive.
B.Disapproving.
C.Doubtful.

A.Enjoy the quiet.
B.Listen to his heart.

D.Sharpen his hearing.
27.What does music bring to Horam?
A.A lost soul.
B.A comfortable life.
C.A broader circle of life.
D.A new perception of family.

It's a warm June afternoon, and in a group of bushes and trees, a bird sings. A small insect climbs over a leaf. The Muziekplein forest, next to an 18-storey building and a railway line, is about the size of a basketball court: before it was planted in 2018, the area wasa parking place. The forest is one of seven such extremely small forests in the Dutch city of Utrecht, and 144 across the Netherlands. By the end of this year, according to IVN Nature Education, the organization proposing the country's initiative, there will be 200.
Since the first forest was planted in the Netherlands in 2015, the concept has become popular. Daan Bleichrodt, who launched IVN’s Tiny Forest initiative with the goal of making it easier for children to get into and connect with nature, said that he thinks it is popular because people are becoming more aware of major environmental challenges. Its a very practical way to do something positive in the light of climate change and loss of biodiversity.
Jeroen Schenkels, a senior adviser for the city of Utrecht on green planning. said he sees the mini-forests as nature-based approaches that are able to help the city weather heat waves and improve water retention (保持). But one of the biggest interests is social. "One of the most important things is that they give people the opportunity to be involved in nature in the neighborhood," Schenkels said.
Between 2018 and 2020, 40 different plant and animal groups and 121 total animal species were found in the Muziekplein forest alone. According to Wageningen University researchers, across the 11 tiny forests in their study, volunteers observed 636 animal species. They also identified 298 plant species in addition to the original species planted in the plots. Maintenance of the forests occasionally involves removing aggressive weeds, but in general new plant species, such as wild flowers that appear, are allowed to grow.
28.What is special about the Muzickplein forest?
A.It is newly planted. B.It sits in an urban area.
C.It grows along a railway. D.It is shaped like a basketball court.
29.What's the purpose of the Tiny Forest initiative?
A.To make people realize environmental challenges.
B.To increase the Netherlands' biodiversity.
C.To make nature more accessible to children.
D.To call for action on climate change.
30.What does paragraph 3 focus on?
A.Benefits of mini-forests in cities. B.Ways to keep neighborhoods green.
C.Inspiration for planting forests in cities. D.Importance of being exposed to nature.
31.How does the author state the forests' effect on biodiversity?
A.By doing experiments. B.By giving examples.
C.By listing figures. D.By making comparisons.

For eight-year-old Toby. who is deaf, watching films or TV can sometimes be a bit pointless, because so many of them don't have sign language versions. "We have subtitles but it goes too fast," his dad Jarod Mills said. But now, Toby has some help thanks to an app developed by a 17-year-old student, Mariella Satow, who created a signing app called SignUp.
She got the idea when she was teaching herself American Sign Language(ASL)—one of hundreds of sign languages used across the world. Mariella wanted to watch TV shows to help her learn, and she was disappointed to discover how few had signed versions. It's taken a year for Mariella to develop the technology, with lots of help from ASL teachers and the deaf community.
The app is available in the US as a browser extension—with an interpreter appearing in a box once the film starts playing. It only works on Disney Plus films at the moment, because that's where Mariella thought she could help the most children. Jarod, who works at a school for deaf children, says it was "exciting" watching Toby use Mariella's invention. He says, "Kids are getting information like any hearing child does."
Deaf people in the UK face many of the same barriers when it comes to cinema and TV. "A hearing person can go to the cinema any time whereas deaf people have to make sure there's a suitable viewing a time we're free," says 27-year-old Stacey Worboys from Cardiff. She has learned British Sign Language (BSL), and is comfortable using subtitles when watching TV shows and films. But she feels having an interpreter would make things "more inclusive", especially for someone who might struggle with subtitles. Stacey and Toby aren't the only people to be welcoming Mariella's app. It's now got thousands of users.
Stacey says a UK version of an app like SignUp would make films and TV "more accessible" for the deaf community. Mariella is up for the challenge—and hopes to make a British Sign Language version of her app for other streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. "There are more than 300 sign languages used worldwide, so it'll take a long time to get all of those versions out," she says.
32.Mariella created SignUp because of_________.
A.her awareness of Toby's frustration
B.lack of signed TV shows for the deaf
C.her childhood memories in a cinema
D.the encouragement from her teachers
33.What will be Mariella's next challenge?
A.To update the app for cinemas.
B.To design a BSL version of the app.
C.To launch a universal version of the app
D.To promote the use of her app worldwide.
34.Which of the following words can best describe Mariella?
A.Creative and caring. B.Talented and humorous.
C.Curious and fearless. D.Knowledgeable and humble.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)

Humans start developing a sense of humour as early as six weeks old, when babies begin to laugh and smile in response to stimuli (刺激物). Laughter and humour provide psychological scientists with rich resources for studying human psychology.
Theories focusing on the evolution of laughter point to it as an important adaptation for social communication. For example, in 1950, a U.S. sound engineer started recording his own ‘laugh tracks’. These were intended to help people at home feel like they were in a social situation. He even recorded various types of laughter. ___35___
In one study, carried out in 2016 at the university of California, samples of laughter from pairs of English-speaking students were recorded and played to listeners from 24 diverse societies. ___36___ On average, the results were remarkably consistent: worldwide, people’s guesses were correct approximately 60% of the time.
Another study by researchers of Australian National University was based on the assumption that humour might provide a pause from dull situations in the workplace. ___37___ The researchers first asked the students to cross out every instance of the letter ‘e’ over two pages of text. The students then were randomly assigned to watch a video clip. Some watched a clip of the BBC comedy Mr. Bean, and others a factual video about the management profession.
The students then completed a task requiring persistence in which they were asked to guess the potential performance of employees based on provided profiles, and were told that making 10 correct assessments in a row would lead to a win. ___38___ Students who had watched the Mr. Bean video ended up spending significantly more time working on the task, making twice as many predictions as the other group.
___39___ Again, participants who watched the humorous video spent significantly more time working on this boring task and completed more questions correctly than students from the other group.
Traditionally, individuals are advised to avoid things such as humour that may distract them from the accomplishment of task goals. However, humour actually helps relieve stress and facilitate social relationships. It is not only enjoyable but more importantly, energizing.A.Participants were asked whether the pairs were friends or strangers.
B.This ‘mental break’ might facilitate the addition of mental resources.
C.The researchers then had participants complete long multiplication questions by hand.
D.A team made up of 30 psychological scientists played these recordings to different people.
E.However, the software was programmed that it was impossible to achieve 10 correct answers.
F.Researchers have also found different types of laughter serve as codes to complex human bonds.
G.He found out a simple ‘haha’ communicates a remarkable amount of socially relevant information.
第三部分 书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。
Collecting As a Hobby
Collecting must be one of the most varied of human activities, and it’s one that many psychologists find fascinating.
Some people collect because they want to make money. This could be called an instrumental reason for collecting. They’ll look for, say, antiques that they can buy cheaply and expect to sell at a profit. But there may well be a psychological element, too—buying cheap and selling dear can give the collector a sense of achievement.
Another motive for collecting is the desire to find something special. Some may spend their whole lives in a hunt for this. Psychologically, this can give a purpose to a life that otherwise feels aimless. There is a danger, though, that if the individual is ever lucky enough to find what they’re looking for, rather than celebrating their success, they may feel empty, now that the goal that drove them on has gone.
If you think about collecting postage stamps, another potential reason is its educational value. Stamp collecting opens a window to other countries, and to the plants, animals, or famous people shown on their stamps. In the past, and nowadays, too, a popular form of collecting, was trainspotting. This might involve trying to see every locomotive (火车头) of a particular type, using published data that identify each one, and ticking off each engine as it is seen. As a by-product, many train spotters become very knowledgeable about railway operations, or the technical specifications of different engine types.
Not all collectors are interested in learning from their hobbies. Some people collect because of the need for a sense of control. Stamp collectors, for instance, arrange their stamps in albums very neatly according to their preferred principles.
All hobbies give pleasure, but the common factor in collecting is usually passion. Collecting can be totally appealing, and can give a strong sense of personal achievement. To non-collectors it may appear a strange way of spending time, but potentially, collecting has a lot going for it.
40.What is the instrumental reason for collecting?
41.What is the danger of hunting for something special as a life purpose?
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
➢ Collectors gain material and psychological benefits from collecting, but non-collectors may not see its value, so they are not advised to have a try.
43.If you are a collector, what do you collect? And why? (In about 40 words)
