    第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)

    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该

    项涂黑。

    A

In February, before the outbreak of Covid-19, I sold my old-style car. I thought it wouldn’t be a big deal: I live in London within walking distance of three subway stations and countless bus stops. I own a bike; there are taxis and supermarket delivery services, and I joined a car-share program, all of which can save me a big sum of money to fund my future green transport.

Then the lockdown (封锁)happened and being car-free suddenly felt like a big deal. I couldn’t get a supermarket delivery. I couldn7t take my broken garden chairs to the recycling center. And a few days into lockdown, somebody stole my bike!

When the lockdown stopped, it just got worse. I was eager to go to the countryside or beach, but taking public transport or a taxi felt like too much of a risk. The car-share program turned out to be unbelievably difficult to deal with—every area has its own rules about where you can and can^ park, and taking a car-share vehicle              beyond              the              city is impossible. And renting a car is clearly expensive and time-consuming.

So last month I did a U-turn. I felt guilty but also a sense of satisfaction: I had tried, but the pandemic (疫情)beat me. Most of all, I got freedomsitting behind the wheel (方向盘)and getting to wherever I want. Don7t get me wrong. I still expect to travel without creating greenhouse gases and pollution. But life in a pandemic has drawn attention to some of the disadvantages of public transport, such as time and money wasted on the road to offices and the risk of Covid-19. It has also stressed our need to review our relationship with the environment. Problems with public transport have meant that the ownership and use of a car has become quite a useful thing.

    21. Why did the author sell his car in the first paragraph?

    A. His car was too old to drive.

    B. He tried to lead a greener life.

    C. He felt a car was no longer useful.

    D. He wanted to get a big sum of money.

    22. What did the author probably mean by “I did a U-turn” in paragraph 4?

    A. I bought a new car.

    B. I made a tough decision.

    C. I broke the lockdown rules.

    D. I chose another path to life.

    23. What’s the author’s attitude toward driving a car in the last paragraph?

    A. doubtful B. concerned C. positive D. uncertain

    24. Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A. A greener choice in life

    B. Back behind the wheel

    C. How to survive the lockdown

    D. The disadvantages of public transport

    B

Debate is without doubt a talent for humans. But in a recent radio interview, Noam Slonim of IBM Research talked about an impressive achievement of computer engineering from his team: an Al-powered system, named Project Debater, can take part in difficult debate with humans over topics ranging from the value of space exploration to the risks of genetic (基因的)engineering.

In a new Nature paper, Slonim and his workmates show that across 80 debate topics, Project Debater^ computational argument technology has done fairly good jobs—with a human audience being the judge 判)of that. “However, it is still somewhat weaker on average than expert human debaters,” Slonim says.

In the 2019 San Francisco showcase, the system went head-to-head with expert debater Harish Natarajan. Apart from gaming, it7s rare to see humans and machines go against each other, let alone in a debate. Like human debater, the AI was given only 15 minutes to research the topic and prepare for the debate—going through thousands of gigabytes (千兆字节)of information at record speed to form an opening statement and arguments. They were later delivered through a robotic female voice, with near perfect language.

It couldn’t beat Natarajan in San Francisco, but in a different debate, the system~~co-led by Slonim and fellow IBM researcher Ranit Aharonov~~has managed to change the opinions of nine people in a debate on the use of tele-medicine, successfiilly pulling the debate to its side and holding down the argument of its human competitors.

But overall, in this area, humans still have a clear advantage. Will AI be able to recognize meaning or larger contexts in a debate? Can a system developed from Project Debater one day take a hand in real-life social media arguments to remove misinformation or guide a debate in one direction or another? Only time can tell.

    25. What can we learn about “Project Debater”

    A. It is a system with a human mind.

    B. It is as smart as human debaters.

    C. It forms ideas by referring to huge data.

    D. It has a big chance to change humans9 views.

    26. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

    A. AI can’t be used in real-life social media.

    B. AI is unlikely to go beyond its creator.

    C. AI is meant to guide public opinions.

    D. AI still needs to be further developed.

    27. Where is the passage probably taken from?

    A. A radio program

    B. A competition poster

    C. A book review

    D. A science magazine

    C

The huge stone human statues of Easter Island have fascinated the world for centuries, but now a new research has solved one of the biggest mysteries (团):why the statues are located where they are.

Easter Island has more than 600 statues, built by different families hundreds of years ago. It is thought the statues represent their ancestors. However, it was previously a mystery why many of them were around the coast. While scientists have suggested the sites may have a connection with the island^ resources M), the latest research is the first attempt to look into such views.

Researchers focused on the east of the island, where various resources are located, and looked at the distribution (分布)of 93 statues built before European sailors arrived in the 18th century. After finding no connection with the rock used for the construction, they considered whether the statues were found near other important resources.

Things became interesting when they checked where the islanders got their drinking water. The island has no long-standing streams or lakes. However, fresh water brought by storm could pass through the ground and go deeper into the underground water system. 4tIt is sort of amazing at low tide ('SS/X) when the water goes down, suddenly there are streams running off at different sites right at the coast that is just pure fresh water” said Lipo. “We noticed, actually, when we were doing an investigation on the island, that we saw horses drinking from the ocean.”

The results of the new research—published in the journal Plos One—found that closeness to freshwater sites is the best explanation for the location of the statues, including why they appear inland as well as on the coast. ''Historical records show the islanders also made wells to get drinking water, said Lipo, adding that historic wells explained some inland statue locations that were apparently without natural water resources.

The results, said Lipo, made sense, as drinking water is important for the islanders and it is not practical to have to walk miles to get it.

    28. The new research is thought to be unique because it is the first_.

    A. to find the statues located around the coast

    B. to connect the statues with the islanders7 ancestors

    C. to examine the connection between statues and resources

    D. to suggest a connection between statues and resources

    29. Why did Lipo refer to the example of the horses in paragraph 4?

    A. To suggest that the horses have got used to sea water.

    B. To provide evidence of drinking water on the coast.

    C. To describe an interesting thing which is rare to see.

    D. To show that the island has a great shortage of water.

    30. What?s the possible reason why some statues are not located on the coast?

    A. The islanders had learned to dig wells.

    B. The islanders could rely on inland lakes.

    C. The streams would run off at different sites.

    D. The islanders could walk miles to get water.
