Will Hodson, a primary school teacher in London, was reading a superhero book to his students one day when a thought struck him. “We were talking about how we can all do something heroic every day—open a door for someone, say something nice to someone,” he recalled. “I decided not to use the day’s lesson plans and asked the five-year-old to think about, ‘What are we all good at?’ ”

Hodson, 39 , was good at cycling, and he ended up taking his lesson to an extreme. After saving up for two years, he left his job and set off on a five-year ride across seven continents(洲) to raise money for charity, including for Parkinson’s disease, which his father has. Calling himself Super Cycling Man, he tries to visit at least one school per country, to spread the message that “We can all be heroes.”

Starting last May, Hodson has hit 14 countries in Europe. On the road, strangers have acted heroically—Turkish gas station attendants sheltered him from the snow, and people in Serbia made a huge pizza for him.

So far, he has raised about $19,000 of the $140,000 he hopes to raise. Antarctica, the most expensive continent to visit, is last on his list, after Asia, Australia, the Americas and Africa.

The hardest part of the trip has been “just keeping my parents at manageable stress(压力) levels”. “You see so much bad news in the world, but I see a very different picture—people inviting me to their houses, people pouring me drinks on the street at night.”

Along with the superhero message, Hodson hopes to show people that “life’s pretty good on two wheels”—particularly in places where cycling is less popular. “Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital, with its shortage of bike lanes(自行车道) and its crazy drivers, is the toughest(最艰难的) city I’ve seen for cyclists, but even there, young people have been receptive.”

“The youth don’t want to necessarily have a big pot belly(大肚子) and drive around in a car.”

    24. What does Hodson's “thought”(in Para.1) refer to?

    A. Giving up his teaching job.     B. Being a hero himself.

    C. Doing something heroic every day. D. Reading more superhero books to his students.

    25. Hodson’s cycling around the world ________.

    A. will be finished in two years B. is intended for his father

    C. is a charity ride             D. began without any preparation

    26. What’s the most difficult thing for Hodson on his trip?

    A. Facing the terrible weather.

    B. Finding cheap places to sleep in.

    C. Winning his parents’ full support.

    D. Keeping his parents from worrying about him.

    27. What does Hodson say about the young in Tbilisi?

    A. They are open to his idea.   B. They are crazy drivers.

    C. They hate cyclists.       D. They eat and drink too much.

    C

People who often eat nuts appear to live longer, according to the latest study of its kind. The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggested the greatest benefit was in those eating them on their daily diet.

Eating nuts was linked to a healthier lifestyle including being less likely to smoke or be overweight and more likely to exercise. The British Heart Foundation said more research was needed to prove the link, “While this is an interesting link, we need further research to make sure if it's the nuts that protect heart health, or other sides of people’s lifestyle .”

The study followed nearly 120,000 people for 30 years. The more regularly people ate nuts, the less likely they were to die during the study. People eating nuts once a week were 11% less likely to have died during the study than those who never ate nuts. Lead researcher Dr. Charles Fuchs, from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said, “The most obvious benefit was a decrease of 29%in deaths from heart disease, but we also saw a significant reduction-11%- in the danger of dying from cancer.”

They suggest nuts are lowering cholesterol(胆固醇). and insulin resistance(胰岛素抗性). Nuts contain unsaturated fat(不饱和脂肪), protein(蛋白质) and several kinds of vitamins and minerals and they can take the place of snacks like chocolate bars, cakes and biscuits.

Victoria Taylor, senior expert at the British Heart Foundation, said, “This study shows close connection between regularly eating a small handful of nuts and a lower risk of death from heart disease.” Choosing plain, unsalted foods rather than sweet, salted, or chocolate-covered will keep your salt and sugar intake down.

    28. According to the passage, what kind of people benefit most from eating nuts?

    A. Those who eat most nuts at a time.

    B. Those who eat most nuts.

    C. Those who eat nuts on their daily diet.

    D. Those who eat less nuts.

    29. Which kind of disease had a most decrease for regular nuts eater?

    A. Cancer.       B. Heart disease.      C. Stomach disease.      D. Unknown.

    30. The writer developed the article mainly by       .

    A. providing facts  B. giving examples   C. listing data  D. comparing the difference

    31. Which section should the passage be taken from the newspaper?

    A. Science section.  B. Health section.   C. Entertainment section.   D. Tech section.

    D

In a natural disaster: a hurricane, flood, volcanic eruption, or other catastrophes. Minutes and even seconds of warning can make the difference between life and death. Because of this, scientists are working to use the latest technological advances to predict when and where disasters will happen. They are also studying how best to analyze and communicate this information once it is obtained.

On September 29,1998, Hurricane Georges made landfall in Biloxi, Mississippi, after damaging Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and several islands of the Caribbean badly with heavy rains and winds up to 160 km per hour. Few people lost their lives along the Gulf Coast of the United States, although hundreds died in the Caribbean. This was a very different result, when a powerful Gulf Coast hurricane made an unexpected direct hit on Galveston, Texas, killing at least 6,000 people. Vastly improved hurricane warnings explain the different circumstances at either end of the 20th century—residents of Galveston had no advance warning that a storm was approaching, while residents of Biloxi had been warned days in advance, allowing for extensive safety precautions (预防).

At the same time that people in Biloxi were thankful for the advance warning, some residents of New Orleans, Louisiana were less satisfied. A day before Georges made landfall, forecasters were predicting that the hurricane had a good chance of striking New Orleans. Emergency management officials must begin evacuations (疏散) well before a storm strikes. But evacuation costs money. The mayor of New Orleans estimated that his city’s preparations for Georges cost more than 50 million. After Georges missed New Orleans, some residents questioned the value of the hurricane forecasts in the face of such high costs.

The different views on the early warnings for Hurricane Georges show some of the complexities (复杂) related to predicting disasters. Disaster prediction is a process of providing scientific information to the government officials and other decision makers who must respond to those predictions.

    32. What is the purpose of disaster prediction according to the passage?

    A. To find out the cause of disasters.

    B. To save people lives and reduce damage.

    C. To prevent natural disasters happening.

    D. To apply advanced technology to disaster prediction.

    33. Which of the following areas suffered the most severe damage?

    A. Puerto Rico. B. New Orleans.   C. Biloxi, Mississippi.   D. Galveston, Texas.

    34. The city residents of New Orleans were unsatisfied because ______.

    A. their preparations were made in vain

    B. the hurricane warning arrived rather late

    C. the forecast hurricane did not hit the city

    D. they suffered from a heavy hurricane attack

    35. What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A. The different ways of disaster prediction.

    B. Technological advances in disaster prediction.

    C. The benefits and preparations of disaster prediction.

    D. The importance and uncertainty of disaster prediction.
