I have frequently taught Research Methods and Design to college students at several institutions. I love teaching this course. One reason, of course, is that I enjoy thinking about research methodology (方法学) and sharing it with others. The other reason, however, is the obvious impact that it has on students. Every term, one (if not more) student tells me how taking this course has affected him/her: “I used to just read articles and believe what they said, but now I find myself asking ‘Is this true? How do they know? Is this a well designed study?’ ” That is what I want the students to achieve in this course.
This brings to mind something written by Dorothy L. Sayers in 1948. One of her books, The Lost Tools of Learning speaks to Sayers’ thoughts on education. “By teaching our young men and women to read, we have left them at the mercy of the printed words. By the invention of the film and the radio, we have made certain that no dislike for reading shall protect them from the constant battery of words, words, words. They do not know what the words mean: they are victims to words in their emotions instead of being the masters of them in their intelligence.”
We are well past the 1940s, but her observation is still relevant. Sayers’ point is well taken. In the world of 24-hour news and social media that often resembles the Wild West, the ability to carry out evaluations has never been more important. In order to resist the distortions with which we are constantly bombed in the media, as well as be able to present a persuasive argument, we must be able to reason well, and think and give a judgement carefully.
When my students begin the Research Methods and Design course, they are generally not content to read all those research article I give. However, by the end of the course, they are excited about their newly obtained abilities.

I remember when Kamala Harris became Joe Biden’s running mate, it seemed funny how many people pronounced her name incorrectly. On one occasion, a news host became upset when being corrected, and purposely called her Kumbaya.
I am no stranger to this issue as many of my students are from Asian and Middle Eastern countries, and sometimes their names are difficult for me to pronounce, even after asking them how to say it. Many students seem unwilling to correct me when I attempt to learn their names correctly. The other thing I’ve seen in growing numbers is students “adopting” an English name. It’s much more common than many think, for people to change their names in order to fit in.
This is especially the case when it comes to seeking jobs. Racial and cultural minorities often attempt to avoid discrimination hiring by hiding racial cues on the resume including changing their name. This is referred to as “resume whitening”. Research shows almost 50 percent of black and Asian job applicants did so.
Xian Zhao from the University of Toronto researches ethnic name pronunciation, saying that many people don’t understand that habitually pronouncing an unfamiliar name inaccurately is a form of indirect discrimination. It sends a message that “you are the minorities” says Zhao. “You are not important in this environment, so why should I take time and my effort to learn it?” On the other end, those with ethnic names frequently don’t correct people, even when their names are pronounced wrong repeatedly, feeling it is better just to keep the peace and not stand out for their names are difficult.
It is important to try to pronounce everyone’s name as they pronounce it. This communicates respect of them as a person and their culture. There is nothing wrong with asking someone to repeat their name so that you can learn to pronounce it properly. This is usually appreciated.

When Mexican scientist of the evolution of animal behavior, Laura Cuaya, moved to Hungary for her postdoctoral studies in Budapest, she brought her pet dog, Kun-kun, along for the ride. Cuaya couldn’t help noticing how locals warmed to dogs. This prompted her naturally curious scientific mind to start asking questions. “Here people are talking all the time to Kun-kun, but I always wonder if Kun-kun can recognize that people in Budapest speak Hungarian, not Spanish?” So she set out to find an answer through a scientific study.
Cuaya and her colleagues decided to use brain images from MRI scanning to shed light on her hunch. They worked with dogs of various ages that had, until the experiment, only heard their owners speak just one of the two languages, Spanish or Hungarian. Not surprisingly, getting the dogs to happily take part in the experiment took some creative coaxing (劝诱) and animal training! The researchers first needed to teach Kun-kun and her 17 fellow participating dogs including a labradoodle, a golden retriever and Australian shepherds, to lie still in a brain scanner. Their pet parents were always present, and they could leave the scanner at any point.
The research team played children’s classic book The Little Prince in both Spanish and Hungarian while scanning the dogs’ brains with an MRI machine. They were looking for evidence that their brains reacted differently to a familiar and unfamiliar language. The researchers also played scrambled versions of the story to find out if dogs could distinguish between speech and non-speech.
The images reveal that dogs’ brains show different patterns of activity for an unfamiliar language than for a familiar one—the first time anyone has proved, researchers say, that a non-human brain can distinguish between two languages. This means that the sounds and rhythms of a familiar language are accessible to non-humans.
The team also found that the brains of older dogs were more skilled at detecting speech “suggesting a role for the amount of language exposure”. They suggest that dogs have refined their ability to distinguish between human languages over the long process of domestication.

M: That’s a brilliant idea. I really want to have a short getaway(短假) from London. I do want some relaxing time in a small town or village. What can we do in Cornwall? I have never been there before.
W: It has breathtaking scenery and beaches. The South West Coastal Path is great for hiking lovers, and many of the bays on the North Coast provide some of the best surfing spots in the UK.
M: That’s great. I especially look forward to the latter.
W: There is also a lot of history in Cornwall. We can go and explore the coastal ruins of the birthplace of King Arthur. We can also visit Michael’s Mount.
M: What’s Michael’s Mount?
W: A small island on the South Coast.
M: Is there a place for a drink there?
W: Certainly. We can do that at the Watering Hole on the beach.
M: I really cannot wait to go to that town.
W: Me, either.

W: Mark, you work at a hospital, right?
M: No, I don’t. It’s my brother Mike that works at a hospital. He looks after patients there. I teach English at a school.
W: So what skills do you need for your profession, aside from English language skills?
M: First, I need interpersonal communication skills. Because teaching is all about teaching other people. I also need to have great organizational skills to organize materials, the classes, the student assignments and so on and so forth. Also having some leadership skills is also important.
W: So which of the three are you best at?
M: It’s the first.
W: How do you recommend that people develop their teaching skills? Is there a good resource for developing these skills?
M: The best resource is feedback from colleagues. I like listening to my colleagues for advice. Also, one should attend conferences in the field, read books about teaching and try out new things. I spend most of my leisure time reading.
W: So why did you become a teacher in the first place?
M: It’s because I really loved teaching. Though there is a huge amount of work for me every week, I enjoy my work.
W: So how long have you been teaching?
M: I’m thirty-eight now, which means I’ve been teaching for ten years.

M: Vatican Radio recently began its first regular news broadcast in Latin. The broadcast is the latest effort to expand the use of Latin. The weekly Vatican Radio news broadcast lasts five minutes. It will be followed by a 30-minute show with Latin conversation. The radio’s news team, as well as the Vatican’s Latin translation department, will produce the program. Italian businessman Luca Desiata published a new book of crossword puzzles in Latin and ancient Greek this month. This book is thought to be the first with no help or explanations in modern languages. Desiata said the Internet has helped renew interest in Latin as more and more schools around the world stop teaching it. He said we now have Wikipedia in Latin, and about 40 Latin Facebook groups around the world. Many attempts have been made to bring Latin back to popular use. Some have tried to introduce new words for things that did not exist at the time of the Roman Empire. In the 1990s, for example, top Vatican Latin researcher Carlo Egger came up with some words for common objects in the home. Maybe given time, the dead language will come back to life.
