Martin was eleven and often went fishing with his father. On the day before the bass(鲈鱼)season opened, he and his father were fishing in the evening.
Martin waited patiently for some time, and then he lifted a huge fish out of the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.
Martin’s father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 p.m.—two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, and then at Martin.
“You’ll have to put it back, son,” he said.
    “Dad!” cried Martin.
“There will be other fish,” said his father.
“Not as big as this one,” cried Martin.
Looking around the lake, Martin saw no other fishermen or boats. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, he knew from his father’s voice that the decision could not be changed. Martin threw the huge bass into the water. He thought that he would never again see such a big fish.
That was 34 years ago. Today Martin is a successful engineer in New York City. He often takes his son to fish at the same place. And he was right. He has never again caught such a large fish as the one he got that night long ago. But he does see that same fish... again and again... every time he comes up against a question of ethics.

This summer I attended my first music festival. Most of the festivalgoers needed to buy tickets, but we didn’t. Instead, we volunteered as festival managers. We each worked 3 shifts (轮班) - each shift was 8 hours long-in exchange for a free ticket to the festival.
Leeds Festival is a large music festival which takes place yearly at the end of August, and thousands of people attend it each year.
There were several different periods. Each of them was fit for a different music taste: rock, pop, alternative and dance. As well as the fantastic music, there were also funfair (杂耍) rides, food outlets and a silent disco. I loved silent discos: everyone had a set of headphones (耳机) with two channels and music was played through the headphones. As a result, people could dance and sing along to completely different songs!
While we weren’t working, we were free to enjoy the festival. We saw different kinds of artists across the weekend. I really enjoyed seeing Imagine Dragons, Vampire Weekend and, of course, Arctic Monkeys.
We camped for five nights and it was freezing every night! However, we had a really nice campsite. I had a great time and would certainly be returning the next year!

    A. Because everyone could have a set of headphones.
    B. Because music was played through the headphones.
    C. Because people could listen to different songs silently.
    D. Because people could sing and dance while they were listening to music silently.
    44. Which of the following is NOT TRUE about Leeds Festival?
    A. It’s held every year.
    B. Many artists could be seen in August.
    C. A silent disco is very popular with people.

I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago. Her husband died of a heart attack. About a week after his death, she shared some of her insights with us.
The class was nearly over. She said, “Before class is over, I would like to share with all of you an important thought.”
“Each of us is put here on Earth to learn, share, love, appreciate and give of ourselves. We must make good use of every single day.”
Her eyes beginning to water, she went on, “So I would like you all to make me a promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful to notice. It doesn’t have to be something you see—it could be a scent or the sound of the gentle wind.”
“Please look for these things, and treasure them. They are the stuff of life. We must make it a point to notice them, for at any time it can all be taken away.”
Every once in a while, I think of that teacher and try to treasure all of those things that sometimes we do not realize.
Take notice of something special you see on your lunch hour today. Walk barefoot along the beach at sunset. For as we get older, it is not the things we did that we regret, but the things we didn’t do.

Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony(和谐) in the same home? People who are thinking about keeping a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new success. According to the study, if the cat comes before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young(less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a good relationship between their cat and dog.
However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while fighting was seen in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals(信号) were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it shows aggression(好斗), while a dog doing the same shows submission.
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers studied a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk ‘dog’, and dogs can learn how to talk ‘Cat’.
What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn to read each other’s body languages, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was expected. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together in the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom(梳理) each other.
The importance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets-to people who don’t get along, including neighbors, classmates at class, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.
    51. The underlined word “swimmingly” in paragraph1 is closest in meaning to.

___66___It's a friendly way people in the United States greet each other. But "How are you?" is also a very unusual question. It's a question that often doesn't have an answer.
When a person meets a friend on the street and asks "How are you?", the person doesn't really expect to hear an answer such as "I really don't know what's wrong with me. I thought I had a cold. I look some medicine, but that didn't help much, so I'll go to the doctor." The person who asks "How are you'" expects to hear the answer "Fine." even if the other person isn't! The reason is that "How are you?" isn't really a question and "Fine" isn't really an answer. ___67___
Sometimes people also don't say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks "Do you agree?", the other person might be thinking "No, I disagree. I think you're wrong." But it isn't very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say, "I'm not so sure." ___68___
People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish conversations with other people. For example, many conversations over the phone end when one person says, "I've got to go now." Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse: "Someone's at the door." I've got to put the vegetables away." "Something is burning on the stove!" ___69___Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't very polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an opinion, or ending a conversation, people often don't say exactly what they are thinking. It's an important way that people try to be nice to each other._____70____
    A. We must learn when to keep silent.
    B. "How are you?" is a nice question.
    C. And it's all part of the game of language!
    D. The excuse might be real, or it might not be.
    E. It's a nicer way to say that you don't agree with someone.
    F. People sometimes shake hands when they meet each other.
    G. They are simply ways of greeting people and saying "Hello."

    [参考范文]
    Dear Peter,
How are you? I’m glad to receive your last letter.
There are many Chinese customs that you should know. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a family reunion festival for Chinese people. All the family members usually have a big dinner on this day. After dinner, we enjoy the moon and eat delicious moon cakes. You are supposed to be there on time. It shows your politeness and respect to others. What’s more, you need to pay attention to your table manners. We Chinese use chopsticks to eat and you shouldn’t stick your chopsticks into the bowl. It is impolite. You shouldn't make noise when you're eating, either. I hope my advice will be of some help.
I’m looking forward to your reply!
    Yours,
    Li Hua
