One morning Oral Lee Brown stopped by a local store to make her usual shopping. A little girl came up to her, asking for 25 cents. Because all she had was a $5 bill(纸币), Brown invited the little girl to go with her to the store. Inside the store, Brown told the little girl she could pick out anything she wanted.
Instead of choosing candy or a toy, which would have been the first choice for most kids, the little girl immediately ran for a bag of bread. And she shyly thanked Brown and quickly disappeared around the comer.
That night, Brown couldn't sleep, deciding that she had to find the little girl to help her. She went to the school the girl would most likely attend, but she never found her. Instead, she found many other children, in less than ideal(理想的)conditions. Brown decided to “adopt(领养)” a class of 23 East Oakland, California, first-graders. She told them, “Stay in school, and I’ll send you to college.” To achieve this goal, Brown began saving money, putting aside $10000 per year from her $45000 salary.
Starting that day, Brown became a benefactor, mentor(导师) and second mother to those 23 first-graders, beginning with regular visits, Saturday tutorials and parent meetings. She tracked each child's attendance and grades, bought them Christmas gifts and bought supplies. Nineteen of the students in that first class attended college, and three others went into trade schools. Those students all graduated from college in 2003 and 2004.
Brown is now on her sixth class of “adopted” students. In total, more than 125 young people have gained her help. Some of these students—now in college—report that if it hadn't been for Brown, they would never have been given an opportunity for this kind of education.

C. She dared not pick expensive food. D. She was in a poor living condition.

Capuchin monkeys(僧帽猴) usually make a lot of noise when they find food. They shriek(尖叫) and yell and scream. They are letting their families know where the food is.
One day, Dr. Mario, a scientist, saw a monkey keep quiet when it found food. The monkey didn’t let the other monkeys know about the bananas. Dr. Mario wondered why. "It looked like she was trying to keep her bananas hidden from the other monkeys, he said.
Some scientists used to think that animals couldn't control the sounds coming from their mouths. This would mean that monkeys would make noise even if there was not enough food to share. However, Dr. Mario had a different idea.
Capuchin monkeys love to eat bananas. So Dr. Mario put some bananas on a platform in the trees where the monkeys lived. Sometimes he put many bananas on the platform so that there would be enough for the monkeys to share. Sometimes he put only a few so that there would not be enough bananas for everyone.
Dr. Mario did this for a whole year. Each time Dr. Mario put bananas on the platform, he watched carefully. He wanted to see if the monkeys sometimes kept quiet when they found bananas.
Dr. Mario found three things that made monkeys more likely to remain silent. First, when monkeys found only a few bananas, they often didn't tell their families. Second, in seasons when the forest provided only a little bit of food, monkeys tended to keep quiet when they found bananas. Third, monkeys were more likely to stay quiet when they had many friends nearby and would not have enough food for everyone. Dr. Mario’s banana test showed that monkeys can control the sounds coming from their mouths. It seems that they know when to keep quiet and when to call in the family.
28. When finding food, capuchin monkeys yell and scream in order to .
A. show their satisfaction B. send signals to their families
C. find the place D. threaten their enemies
29. How did Dr. Mario make monkeys behave differently in the test?
A. By changing the number of bananas
B. By changing the location of the platform
C. By controlling the sounds from other monkeys
D. By letting other monkeys know about the bananas.
30. The banana test given by Dr. Mario shows monkeys .
A. like to remain silent B. don’t share their food
C. prefer to eat bananas D. can control their sounds
31. The passage mainly tells us .
A. where monkeys live
B. how monkeys find food
C. when monkeys keep quiet after they find food
D. how monkeys make sounds when they call their families

Herder(放牧人)Buchu Boru has to walk tens of kilometers in search of grassland for his animals during times of drought(干旱)—but he isn’t sure whether he will succeed or not. “Somebody tells you that there is grassland but on arriving, you don’t find any,” said the herder. But when the rains fail next time, he will have a new mobile phone app which will help him move his animals to grassland without too much cost or waste of time.
The Afriscout app, which uses satellite images to find where there is grass and water, claims to be better than what people in Africa are used to. With the app, African herders will be very sure where the grassland with water is and then they will just head there.
Afriscout that reduces the uncertainties associated with the journeys can help protect herds and incomes, making families more adaptable to the severe conditions.
Afriscout, developed by Project Concern International (PCI), a California-based development organization, was first released in Boru’s area in February. The app so far has had about 3,000 users in Kenya, but PCI hopes to increase the number to 4,000 once it finishes mapping Samburu Country, home to the Samburu herding community. It is already used in Tanzania and Ethiopia and PCI plans to expand it in other African countries like Niger soon, said Brenda Wandera, the organization's acting representative in Kenya.
However, the new app faces a few challenges, including limited mobile phone connectivity in some areas, and broad use of old-style mobile phones rather than smart phones. Now, few herders in the region own smart phones—but that may change if they find the app useful.
32. Why dose Boru walk a long distance during drought?
A. To harvest some grass. B. To move to a new place.
C. To search for drinkable water. D. To find food for his animals.
33. What do we know about Afriscout?
A. It was released in California at first. B. It can take photos of a satellite.
C. It will be used in more African countries D. It eases Kenyan environmental problems.
34. From which section of a website is the text probably taken?
A. Environment. B. Technology. C. Lifestyle. D. Economy.
35. Which one can be the best title of the text?
A. Hi-tech can protect animals and incomes.
B. Afriscout faces some challenges in Kenya.
C. An app helps herders cut risk from drought.
D. An organization invented an app for the poor.

Let’s Protect the Environment Together!
Dear boys and girls,
I’m very honored to express my opinion on environment protection.
The first thing I want to stress is that the environment is becoming worse and worse with the development of modern industry. Therefore, it’s high time that some immediate measures should be taken to protect our home—the Earth, or we would have nowhere to live. Moreover, we as high school students can protect our environment by living a different life.
First of all, do turn off lights and other switches when not using them to save electricity. Additionally, if we go out, we should walk, ride or take public transport instead of driving private cars. Last but not the least, reusing paper and bottles in our daily life is also highly recommended.
Let’s start with small things now to make our environment better and better! Only in this way can we live in a more beautiful world!
Thanks for listening!
