Though thousands of adventurers have climbed up Mount Everest, the highest and most famous of the world's 14 tallest mountains, only 40 climbers have conquered them all. Nepalese mountaineer Purja became one of them after he reached the 8028-meter peak(山峰)of China's Mt. Shishapangma on October 29, 2019. Purja made the extraordinary achievement in just six months and six days.
"I am very excited and proud to have reached this final peak and achieved my goal of climbing the world's 14 tallest mountains in record time," Purja said. "It was extremely hard during the six months, and I hope to have proven that anything is possible with some determination, and positivity."
Purja's "Project Possible" started becoming a reality on April 23, 2019, when he successfully peaked Nepal's 8091 meters tall Mt. Annapurna. The climber then rapidly completed the next five mountains, including Mt. Everest, within only four weeks! Five more peaks were conquered in July and the last three during September and October.
The adventurer, who was joined by teams of Nepalese climbers on each of his adventures, met with many memorable and critical moments. On April 23, 2019, while going down Mt. Annapurna, Purja and his team heard about a Malaysian climber who had been separated from his group with no food, water, or oxygen for over 40 hours. They managed to find him and got him airlifted to a hospital. On May 15, 2019, Purja's team similarly helped three trapped climbers on Mt. Kanchenjunga by giving them oxygen.

Life has gone mostly online for many people around the world. With more people going online during the COVID-19 pandemic, global Internet traffic has become a big problem Between January and late March. many major cities experienced an increase in Internet traffic.
Video meetings, online classrooms and stay-at-home entertainment have become a daily routine. This increase in traffic is testing the Internet's strength. In March, major phone networks in the UK experienced mass outages(断供). People were not able to take calls, receive texts or use mobile data.
In the US, major telecommunications companies like AT & T said traffic was up 21 percent month over month. Video streaming services like You Tube, Netflix and Facebook have cut their picture qualities and download speeds. This is being done to reduce network traffic jams.
China has seen an Internet traffic increase of around 50 percent compared to the end of 2019. The country's network speeds went down sharply in early February. However, they returned to normal soon afterwards and have been working well. This is due to China's work in building network infrastructure(基础设施), especially 5G technology. By the end of February, 164, 000 5G base stations had been built nationwide. This has given Chinese networks the power to handle increased traffic.

SYDNEY -Australian scientists have designed a system which uses microwaves to break down plastic into an environmentally friendly by-product.
Head of Electrical Engineering at Australia's James Cook University, Prof. Mohan Jacob revealed on Thursday that by using microwaves, plastic waste can be converted into biochar (生物炭), charcoal that can be used as a soil conditioner.
"We are developing a processing room, which could process many kinds of plastic materials, up to 5 kilograms of waste," Jacob said. "It will be a typical example system for the development of biochars from different types of plastics under various conditions." Jacob explained that microwave energy is used to heat the plastic waste above 600 degrees centigrade within the custom-made room, where it ends up as a biochar, which can then be used to improve the properties(属性)of soil.
Currently underway is step one of the project, testing the room, after which, step two will involve improving the energy efficiency of the system and maximizing the yield of by-products. If all goes to plan, step three will be to construct a medium scale waste processing system which is customizable and can be installed remotely.
Jacob said that with the average person using 130 kg of plastic every year, there is an urgent need for developing better ways of processing it.
"Perhaps contrary to popular opinion, plastic is an indispensable(不可或缺的)material in modern life. It is cheap, competent, lightweight, and has many benefits like maintaining food quality and safety and preventing waste," he said.
"However, abandoned plastics endanger our marine wildlife, and have begun to enter the food chain. There is an urgent need for developing technologies to recover plastic waste."

When Lincoln was just a boy, he had to help his father look after their farm. It was hard work and there weren't any interesting things for him to do. Lincoln wanted to go to school, but there was no school there. He was sad most of the time.
Mrs Lincoln loved the boy very much. She tried her best to make Lincoln happy. One early morning she got up early and went to town. That was a long way and it took her a long time to get to town. She bought something there and started back. And it was late in the evening when she got home.
The next morning Mrs Lincoln said to Lincoln, “Today is your birthday. We're going to have a party.” She put some food on the table and took out a present. “A book！” Lincoln cried. It was an old book, but he liked it. A smile came to his face. He looked up at Mrs Lincoln and said, “Thank you, Mom.”
