This allws the cmpetitrs t stand ut 32 amng thse dressed in the tennis club’s fficial clrs f dark green and purple.
Wimbledn’s mst 33 traditin, hwever, is that all matches are played n utdr grass curts. In fact, Wimbledn is the nly majr tennis turnament still played n grass. Several f the curts at the All England Club are nly used fr tw weeks a year, during the champinships. Fr Wimbledn players, it’s the hnr f a lifetime t play the game they lve n the tennis wrld’s center stage. In additin t the 34 and recgnitin fr the winners is the annually increasing prize mney the champins take hme. Wimbledn cnsists f five main events with several 35 events and invitatin events. Men and wmen, r gentlemen and ladies as they’re called at Wimbledn, cmpete in singles and dubles matches. There is als mixed dubles, where ne man and ne wman make up a team. Events are mstly single 36 turnaments. Only the gentlemen’s, senir gentlemen’s and ladies’ invitatin dubles are rund-rbin (循环赛) turnaments.
During the 14 days f 37 cmpetitin, nearly 500,000 peple will attend the event, including members f the ryal family. On ccasin this has included the Prince f Wales and Her majesty the Queen. In the United States, there have been n deaths frm cmmercial airline accidents since 2013. In fact, fr decades, there has been a general 41 trend in the number f accidents per departure.
Cmplex systems are mre likely t suffer frm failures, but cmmercial aviatin (航空) seems t be a(n) 42 . Since the 1960s, U.S. cmmercial aviatin has becme significantly mre cmplex, and yet, flying has becme safer. What lies behind this remarkable trend is a handful f smart appraches t 43 . Here are tw f them.
    1. Teach peple t speak up—and t listen
A cmmn errr during airplane accidents used t be the 44 f first fficers t questin the captain’s pr decisins. When the captain was flying the airplane, he was hard t challenge, and his mistakes went 45 .
All this began t change in the late 1970s with a training prgram knwn as Crew Resurce Management (CRM). The prgram revlutinized the 46 nt just f the cckpit (机舱) but als f the whle industry. It reframed safety as a 47 issue and put all crew members n mre equal fting. It was n lnger 48 t questin the decisins f a superir; it was required. And CRM taught crew members the language f disagreement.
The lessn isn’t simply that peple lwer dwn in the 49 shuld speak up and higher-ups shuld listen. What CRM has shwn is that peple can be taught t speak up and t listen. The ability t express and embrace 50 isn’t hardwired in ur persnality r cultural backgrund; it’s a skill we can learn.
    2. Learn frm small failures and clse calls
In 1976, the US Federal Aviatin Administratin created an industry-wide system t cllect safety reprts. The Aviatin Safety Reprting System (ASRS) cllects thusands f reprts each mnth. Beynd receiving immunity (豁免权) fr a mistake, it’s a pint f 51 fr pilts t submit ASRS reprts. They knw the reprts make air travel safer. The reprts are stred in a searchable database that anyne can 52 , and Natinal Aernautics and Space Administratin (NASA) highlights safety trends in its mnthly newsletter, Callback.
Here, t, there is a 53 lessn. Small mistakes and near misses can be a rich surce f data abut what might 54 in ur system. Mistakes shuldn’t be 55 . By penly sharing stries f failures and near failures, we can treat errrs as an pprtunity t learn.

Disney disliked the amusement parks they ften visited, seeing them as dirty, unimaginative places run by rude emplyees.
He thught he culd d better. In 1939 he asked tw animatrs (动画片制作者) at his mvie studi t wrk n a plan fr an amusement park. By 1952 the idea had expanded int a $1.5 millin amusement park prpsal that he presented t Burbank. The City Cuncil, which feared such a prject wuld create a carnival (嘉年华) atmsphere, rejected the prpsal. Disney cunted the rejectin as a frtunate setback. By nw, his dream fr a theme park had gne beynd the space available in Burbank. He searched lcatins thrughut Suthern Califrnia. A 160-acre range garden, 22 miles suth f Ls Angeles, was sn selected.
The ABC televisin netwrk ffered $5 millin in lans and investments if Disney agreed t prduce and hst a ne-hur weekly shw called “Disneyland”. The deal amunted t mnths f free advertising fr the park and allwed Disney t intrduce TV audiences, particularly kids, t the park.
Disneyland pened then. The 5,000 expected guests increased t 28,154, thanks t fake tickets. After the madness f pening day, Disney and his new park were criticized in the press. The media predicted a quick and early end. But the public didn’t listen. Visitrs arrived in large grups, and within weeks Disneyland was a success.
Over sixty years later, Disneyland’s ppularity cntinues t grw, with ttal verall attendance tpping 700 millin and shwing n signs f slwing dwn.

A new study suggests the Apple Watch was able t identify abnrmal heart rates that culd be linked t a serius heart cnditin.
Mre than 400,000 Apple Watch users vlunteered fr the study. It was a prject f researchers at the Stanfrd University Schl f Medicine. Apple, the American technlgy cmpany, prvided mney fr the study. Results were recently presented at a majr cnference n heart health in New Orleans, Luisiana.
The researchers lked fr signs f atrial fibrillatin, als called “a-fib”, the mst cmmn frm f irregular heartbeat. Sme peple with a-fib feel changes in their heartbeat, while thers d nt. Because f this, many peple d nt knw they have the cnditin. Peple with untreated a-fib are abut five times mre likely t suffer a strke (中风). In the United States, a-fib causes an estimated 130,000 deaths and 750,000 hspitalizatins each year.
Peple taking part in the study wre the Apple Watch fr extended perids. The devices cntain an app that cntinuusly gathers infrmatin withut users having t d anything. It uses the watch’s light sensr technlgy t measure bld flw. The system is designed t identify changes that might shw an irregular heartbeat.
The researchers said that ut f thse taking part, abut 2,000 subjects (实验对象) received a warning frm the device that they might have a prblem. Thse individuals were then asked t cntact a dctr, wh decided whether they shuld receive mre clse watch fr a pssible irregular heartbeat.
Llyd Minr, head f Stanfrd’s Schl f Medicine, said in a statement that the results shw great prmise in using technlgy t create “mre predictive and preventive health care”. Dctr Minr added that a-fib is just ne example f a cnditin devices can help identify in the future. “This study pens the dr t further research int wearable technlgies and hw they might be used t prevent disease befre it strikes,” he said.
But sme health researchers warned against making any general judgements based n the Apple-financed study. They have called fr much mre research t measure the effectiveness f wearable devices t identify signs f disease. Richard Kvacs, wh was with the American Cllege f Cardilgy and was nt invlved with the study, tld the Assciated Press that despite the results, the Apple Watch system “is nt perfect.” He nted that since the study did nt have a cmparisn grup getting regular ECG measurements, there is n way f knwing if the device missed heartbeat prblems. This culd give users a false sense f security, he said.
Other experts agreed that mre studies are needed befre similar device-based health bservatin systems are widely recmmended.
    63. What des the new study mainly find ut?
    A. Apple Watch can warn f heart prblems.B. Apple Watch can prtect peple against a-fib.
    C. Abnrmal heart rates can cause a strke.D. Heart prblems can be identified and cured.
    64. Apple Watch identifies irregular heartbeats by _____.
    A. measuring the wearer’s heart ratesB. sending infrmatin t the wearer thrugh an app
    C. extending the time f wearing itD. mnitring the wearer’s bldstream
    65. Which f the fllwing might be what Llyd Minr means in his statement?
    A. It’s difficult fr dctrs t predict and prevent disease nw.
    B. A-fib is just ne example f a cnditin that causes heart prblems.
    C. Wearable technlgies might identify and treat any disease ne day.
    D. There are mre pssibilities f develpment in wearable technlgy.

    Sectin C
Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Fill in each blank with a prper sentence given in the bx. Each sentence can be used nly nce. Nte that there are tw mre sentences than yu need.
Sculpture with a Life f Its Own
There is a new type f animal that has been walking alng the beaches since the 1990s. They are called Strandbeest, which is Dutch fr beach beast. 67 They are creatins f Dutch artist The Jansen, and they can mve themselves using nthing mre than the pwer f the wind. Jansen has even created a way fr his beasts t “eat” the air, and stre its pwer by pressurizing bttles. This stred pwer als allws the sculptures t detect when they have entered the water and change their directin. He has even devised a methd fr them t stp themselves in the sand if a strm is appraching!
The beauty f these creatins is that they have n electrnic parts, yet they have a basic lgic system that helps them walk in their habitat. Jansen’s creatins lk alive as they mve with a steady, even mtin n the hard sand. Every year, he imprves his designs. 68
Jansen’s kinetic sculptures use an innvative design t transfrm simple mtins int amazing wrks f art. The Strandbeests have a mechanical linkage that creates a walking mtin using triangles (三角形物体). The sculptures are large but have a delicate appearance. The fascinating cmbinatins f thin tubes and fine fin-like (像鳍一样的) sails mving in the breeze create a striking image. One culd easily believe they are sme srt f strange lifefrm walking alng the beach. 69 He created a beast, named Animaris Rhincers Lignatus, which was made ut f wd and weighed 250 kilgrams.
70 There are many artists that use mtin t create spectacular visual effects. Sme are large pieces, but many can sit n a desk r hang n a wall. Hwever, they all have ne thing in cmmn: yu can’t appreciate their artistry until yu see them mve. Jansen als sells mini versins f sme f his beasts. They cme in bxes that yu can assemble withut any special tls. Yu, t, can try yur hand at creating kinetic art!
    IV. Summary Writing
Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Summarize the main idea and the main pint(s) f the passage in n mre than 60 wrds. Use yur wn wrds as far as pssible.
    71. Train Yur Brain
When was the last time smething imprtant slipped yur mind? Frtunately, memry can be imprved. Peple’s ability t remember has less t d with natural talent than it des with training and practice.
When students want t prepare fr a test, they ften try t study by simply reading ver the material again, cpying ntes, etc. But these methds f remembering are nt always effective. Peple remember mre when they actively engage with the material they are learning rather than passively receiving it. One great way t d this is t test yurself n the material. Cme up with questins abut the tpic, and try t answer them withut lking at yur ntes. It als helps t try t engage with the material in different ways. Fr example, yu culd write yur wn utline r study guide. The mre yu use the infrmatin, the mre likely yu are t remember it.
My music instructr said that it’s better t practice fr five minutes a day, seven days a week, than fr tw hurs n ne day. The same ges fr remembering infrmatin. The mre yu spread ut the time yu spend reviewing infrmatin, the mre likely yu are t remember it.
A psychlgist, Hermann Ebbinghaus, made an imprtant discvery abut memry and frgetting. He fund that peple tend t frget infrmatin in a regular pattern. They frget the mst infrmatin shrtly after learning it. The rate at which they frget then slws dwn ver time. Every time the persn reviews the infrmatin, it causes them t frget less f it—which means they remember mre. S it is essential t review things yu want t remember shrtly after learning them. Over time, yu can review them less and less frequently.
Applying these strategies will help imprve yur memry s that yu can access everything yu learn whenever yu need it.
