Endangered plar bears are breeding (繁殖) with grizzly bears (灰熊), creating “pizzly” bears, which is being driven by climate change, scientists say.
As the wrld warms and Arctic sea ice thins, starving plar bears are being frced ever further suth, where they meet grizzlies, whse ranges are expanding nrthwards. And with that grwing cntact between the tw cme increasing hybrids (杂交种).
With characteristics that culd give the hybrids an advantage in warming nrthern habitats, sme scientists guess that they culd be here t stay. “Usually, hybrids aren’t better suited t their envirnments than their parents, but these hybrids are able t search fr a brader range f fd surces,” Larisa DeSantis, an assciate prfessr f bilgical sciences at Vanderbilt University, tld Live Science.
The rise f “pizzly” bears appears with plar bears’ decline: their numbers are estimated t decrease by mre than 30% in the next 30 years. This sudden fall is linked partly t “pizzly” bears taking up plar bears’ ranges, where they utcmpete them, but als t plar bears’ highly specialized diets.
“Plar bears mainly cnsumed sft fds even during the Medieval Warm Perid, a previus perid f rapid warming,” DeSantis said, referring t fat meals such as seals. “Althugh all f these starving plar bears are trying t find alternative fd surces, like seabird eggs, it culd be a tipping pint fr their survival.” Actually, the calries they gain frm these surces d nt balance ut thse they burn frm searching fr them. This culd result in a habitat ready fr the hybrids t mve in and take ver, leading t a lss in bidiversity if plar bears are replaced.
“We’re having massive impacts with climate change n species,” DeSantis said. “The plar bear is telling us hw bad things are. In sme sense, “pizzly” bears culd be a sad but necessary cmprmise given current warming trends.”
28. Why d plar bears mve further suth?
A. T create hybrids. B. T expand territry.
C. T relieve hunger. D. T cntact grizzlies.
29. What makes “pizzly” bears adapt t natural surrundings better than their parents?

The rechargeable lithium-in (锂离子) battery market is wrth mre than $50 billin. Lithium-in batteries, whse demand cntinues t g up day by day, are used in a wide range f electrnic devices. They are made f fur main cmpnents, and cathde (阴极) is ne f them. The cathde’s active material type is what determines the capacity f a battery.
A recent study, led by Wang Yan, a material scientist f Wrcester Plytechnic Institute, finds that lithium-in batteries made with recycled cathdes wrk better than thse with new cathdes.
“The battery industry is expected t grw sharply in the next decade. This high demand has led cmpanies t g t extremes, like increasing deep-sea mining, t gain access t the minerals used in lithium-in batteries,” Wang said. “Mining minerals will have envirnmental impacts. Recycling spent lithium-in batteries ffers a way ut.”
But until nw, the prspect f using recycled materials in lithium-in batteries has sme manufacturers (制造商) wrrying that it culd impact perfrmance. Thus, lithium-in batteries are still nt widely recycled. Aware f decreasing resurces and envirnmental impact, Wang and ther researchers set ut t find a way t make recycling lithium-in batteries ecnmically practical. Thrugh experiments, they culd recver mre than 90% f the key metals frm spent batteries. These recvered metals became the basis f the new recycled battery’s cathde’s active material.
In tests between Wang’s team’s recycled batteries and brand-new batteries f the same cmpsitin, the recycled batteries utperfrm the new nes in their ability t maintain capacity. It tk 11,600 charge cycles fr recycled cathde batteries t lse 30 percent f their riginal capacity. That was abut 50 percent better than the 7,600 bserved cycles fr new cathde batteries, the team reprted. Thse thusands f extra cycles culd translate int years f better battery perfrmance, even after repeated use and recharging.
32. What can we learn abut lithium-in batteries frm the first paragraph?
A. They are high in price. B. They are in great demand.
C. They are limited in use. D. They are simple in cmpsitin.
33. What des Wang mainly talk abut in paragraph 3?
A. The target users f recycled batteries. B. The ways t get minerals fr batteries.
C. The majr reasns fr recycling batteries. D. The cmplex prcess f recycling batteries.
34. What are the manufacturers cncerned abut?
A. Declining mineral resurces. B. Difficult recycling techniques.
C. Serius envirnmental prblems. D. Inefficient battery perfrmance.
35. Which f the fllwing details best supprts the main idea f the text?
A. The battery industry is ging t develp dramatically.
B. Recycling batteries reduces impact n the envirnment.
C. Scientists can recver key materials frm spent batteries.
D. Recycled batteries utperfrm new nes in charging circles.

As they headed tward the library, the tw high schl students wrinkled their frehead. In the library, they encuntered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passinate. Tw main tasks remained ahead: researching ways t clean up the park and preparing a cnvincing presentatin. As Isabel was gd at researching while Peter always had a talent fr speaking, they cperated quite well. Isabel learned frm a science magazine that a new type f trash bin can squeeze the trash dwn withut being emptied ften, which saves time, mney, and energy. 第四部分 写作
第一节 My Understanding f Failure
This famus qute frm J. Burrughs cnveys that when faced with failure, we shuld reflect n urselves instead f putting the blame n thers, which is mre imprtant than failure itself.
When entering high schl, many classmates fund it really difficult t learn maths and did prly in exams. They blamed it n the teacher rather than themselves, which resulted in even prer perfrmance. I was n exceptin. Hwever, when I realized cmplaining made n sense, I adjusted my learning methds and turned t the teacher whenever I encuntered difficult prblems. Gradually, I began t make prgress, which in turn bsted my cnfidence in maths.
The lessn I have drawn frm this experience is that nly by bravely taking full respnsibility fr failure rather than blaming thers can we succeed.
第二节
A week later, Peter std nervusly at the back f the hall where G Green was meeting. He culd feel nthing but his hands shaking and heart punding. “Yu’ll be great, Peter,” Isabel encuraged him. Peter tk a deep breath and then went n the stage. “Tubman Park needs a new kind f trash can,” Peter explained, pinting t a pster f a trash can. Then Peter explained the wrking principle f the trash can in detail. The judges ndded as they listened, seeming interested in the prject.
After the meeting, Isabel excitedly tld Peter the gd news. G Green had agreed t buy new trash cans fr the park! Hearing the inspiring news, they bth leaped int the air with jy. Peter barely had time t savr the mment befre Isabel started sharing the news with Mrs. Evans and shwing their gratitude t her. Learning the result, Mrs. Evans smiled thrugh misty eyes. “I knw yu can d it! Tubman Park is sure t becme ne that is clean and green again!” Never befre had Peter and Isabel been s prud f themselves.
