“W hen peple talk, listen cmpletely.” Thse wrds f Ernest Hemingway might be a pretty gd guiding principle fr many peple.
Sme firms use a technique knwn as a“listening circle” in which participants areencuraged t talk penly and hnestly abut the issues they face (such as prblems withclleagues). In such a circle, nly ne persn can talk at a time and there is n interruptin. Astudy cited in the Harvard Business Review fund that emplyees wh had taken part in alistening circle suffered less scial anxiety and had fewer wrries abut wrk-relatedmatters than thse wh did nt afterwards.
Listening has been critical t the career f Richard Mullender, wh was a British plicefficer fr 30 years. Eventually he became a negtiatr. When he left the frce, herealised thathis skills might be applicable in the business wrld. S he set up a firm called the ListeningInstitute. Mr Mullender defines listening as“the identificatin, selectin and interpretatin f thekey wrds that turn infrmatin int intelligence". It is crucial t all effective cmmunicatin.
Plenty f peple think that gd listening is abut ndding yur head r keeping eyecntact. But that is nt really listening,Mr Mullender argues. A gd listener is always lkingfr facts, emtins and indicatins f the speaker's values.
Anther imprtant pint t bear in mind is that, when yu talk, yu are nt listening.“Every time yu share an pinin, yu give ut infrmatin abut yurself," Mr Mullendersays.
The lckdwn has increased the need fr managers t listen t wrkers, since thepprtunities fr casual cnversatin have dwindled. Mr Mullender thinks that many peplehave becme depressed in their islatin (隔离),which can lead t stress and anger. He thinks there may be a business pprtunity in helping managers listen mre efficiently, s theycan enhance emplyeewell-being. After a year f islatin, many wrkers wuld prbably lvethe chance t be heard.
    8. What is the value f attending a“listening circle"?
    A. Emplyees can relieve stress.B. Managers give cmfrt t clleagues.
    C. Emplyees may becme mre hnest.D. Managers can slve technlgy prblems.
    9. Accrding t Mr Muilender, the key t being a gd listener is ________.
    A. talking with speakersB. keeping eyes cmmunicatin
    C. giving ut yur infrmatinD. fcusing n the analysis f speakers

    A. Increased.B. Prmted.C. Shrank.D. Disappeared.
    11. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. The Definitin f ListeningB. The Secret f Successful Listening

Rbts have rlled int retail(零售), frm free-mving machines in Giant Fds Stres t autnmus shelf-scanners in Walmart. They free up wrkers frm rutine tasks, but that's nlythe beginning.
The real benefit f retail rbts is the pprtunity t capture mre data abut the prductsn the shelves and custmer buying patterns, which can increase efficiency and accuracy instck management. The key is using retail rbts as data-cllectrs within an internet-f-things(IT), which creates an intelligent digital ecsystem by cmbining a cmplex netwrk f cnnected devices, bjects, and sensrs gathering data. With rbts in stres, retailers alreadyhave the beginnings f IT slutin. Fr example, Auchan Retail Prtugal is launching autnmus shelf-mnitring technlgy in its supermarkets. As the rbts mve arund thestres, they capture phts f every shelf, which are then put int digital frm and turned intanalysis abut ut-f-stck gds.
Such detailed data is incredibly valuable in retail. Fr traditinal retailers, hwever, merelytracking what cnsumers purchase des nt paint the entire picture. The real cmpetitiveadvantage fr retailers cmes in knwing what they culdn't purchase but wanted t. That'swhere rbts cme in.
In the nt-t-distant future, rbts may be able t d mre than thse. Cnsider a retailrbt scanning grcery stre and detecting that supplies f sugar-free peanut butter aredecreasing at twice the rate f regular peanut butter. That real-time discvery then activates anautmated(自动的)rder fr mre sugar-free peanut butter t be sent t a specific stre.
As prduct cycles speed up, retailers will need t becme evenfaster in identifyingmicr-trends in cnsumer behavir t prduce, distribute, and supply the gds and services thatcustmers want right nw. The key t it may be a rbt walking arund freely, bringing datafrm the cnsumer int the data management system in the clud.
    12. The retail rbts are mainly used t
    A. distribute tasks t wrkersB. cllect sales infrmatin
    C. take pictures f custmersD. analyze digital signals
    13. Hw d the retail rbts help imprve stck managing?
    A. By tracking purchasing trends.B. By mnitring the wrkers.
    C. By changing infrmatin int analysis.D. By creating an intelligent ecsystem.
    14. What des the underlined wrds“paint the entire picture”in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Draw the whle picture.B. Capture all data needed.
    C. Prvide all necessary infrmatin.D. Imagine everything might happen.
    15. What might be like after using retail rbts in the future?
    A. The prduct circles will speed up.B. Cmpanies will prduce mre gds.
    C. Custmers can access data in the clud.D. Stck management will becme autmatic.
