第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)
第一节 (共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
One day, I was taking a nap in my office when I woke up to the sound of a car crash. I sat up and looked out of the window. In the parking lot, a car had just crashed into a fence (篱笆). The car must have been moving fast, because it was in bad shape.
Then I watched as the driver got out of the car. He wore loose trousers and a crumpled (褶皱的) shirt unbuttoned to show his chest hair. Immediately, I disliked him.
Then, he opened the passenger door, from which a very small child ran out. A kid in the front seat! My dislike for the man increased greatly.
As the child ran around in the parking lot, the man tried to repair the damage. He tried to pull the ruined fence back into place, but it wouldn’t move. I looked out of the window, silently cheering. The man tried harder. However, suddenly, the man fell hard onto the ground with one of his shoes landing 10 feet away on the sidewalk. I laughed out loudly. That almost brightened my whole morning. He stood up and walked slowly to a nearby apartment. That, I thought, would be the end of it. The man was going to leave the mes (乱七八糟) behind for someone else to clean up.
However, a few minutes later the man appeared with some tools and for the next hour, I watched out of my window as he stubbornly (倔强地) fixed the fence. Now the fence would be extra secure, stronger than before. That man was actually a hero. My ugly assumption, I realized, were all about myself. I would never have fixed that fence and would have run away.
Years later I still look out of my window at the fence almost every day. It makes me wonder what else that man has improved and how I can make myself more like him.
21. In paragraph 2, the author thought of the man as ______.
A. irresponsible B. impatient. C. thoughtful. D. loving.
22. The underlined word “That” in paragraph 3 probably refers to ______.
A. the man’s trying to fix the fence B. the man’s falling onto the ground
C. the man’s car crashing into the fence D. the man’s kid running around cheerfully
23. What helped change the author’s attitude towards the man?
A. The man left his shoes on the sidewalk. B. The man protected his child from the car crash.
C. The man tried to put the damaged fence in place. D. The man came back to fix and improve the fence.
24. What lesson can we learn from the author’s experience?
A. No pains, no gains. B. You can never be too careful.
C. Don’t judge a book by its cover. D. He who makes no mistakes makes nothing.
B
Teens may become more private during adolescence (青春期) because they are learning how to be more independent, says Carl Pickhardt, a Texasbased scientist who studies parenting adolescents. “As they enter adolescence, parents have less control,” he says. “You’re going to have less communication with your kid who is now entering a larger and more dangerous world.”
However, Pickhardt says, this does not mean that parents should just sit back and do without any information. He says that parents should tell their kids that there are still things they need to know about, such as why their teen was late getting home from school one day.
Iowa’s mom Patty Linker knows this fight well. She is raising two teenage boys: Graham, a 14-year-old eighth grader, and Carter, a 16-year-old high school student. She says that becoming friends with the parents of her children’s friends has helped.
“A lot of times if I want to get any information out of therm, I’ll say, ‘Oh, I can talk to Adam’s mom and she will tell me what was going on on Friday night’, and it will lead to some other discussion,” she says.
Parents should watch their use of questions, Pickhardt says, because the questions can represent authority (权威), and teens won’t like them. “They want their independence to be respected.” he says. Therefore, Pickhardt suggests using questions such as, “It could really help me if you could tell me”, or “Could you help me better understand”. But sometimes teens make mistakes and parents have to correct them. Parents should point out the problem directly, Pickhardt says, and avoid judgments of character.
Parents can also use technology to feel connected. One recent study showed that many teens are friends with their parents on Facebook—and only 5 percent limit what their parents can see.
25. According to the text, who is Adam?
A. A Linker’s relative. B. A Linker’s neighbor.
C. A friend of Linker’s kids. D. A Linker’s co-worker.
26. What is Pickhardt’s opinion on parents’ use of questions?
A. Try to make requests directly. B. Avoid asking too private questions.
C. Make kids understand parental authority. D. Show respect for kids when questioning them.
27. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Why do parents have less control? B. How to correct teens’ mistakes?
C. Why are teenagers getting more private? D. How to stay connected with your teen?
C
Based on some studies, people in their forties, on average, laugh less often each day than children under age 7 and adults over age 65. That’s a bit sad for middle aged men. If it’s been a while since your father let out a good belly laugh, here are some ideas that you can do to get your father back on the road to joy.
A joke book can be helpful. The Dilbert series by Scott Adams is quite funny if office humor is your thing. The Far Side series by Gary Larson came out twenty years ago, but it still works even for today’s people. In fact, you don’t even have to buy a book. You can go online and find comic (喜剧的) videos, lists of jokes and so on.
On DVD, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon or however you get them, you can find funny movies and shows that can make a difference in your life. Teen movies are particularly funny when done well. Mean Girls, 10 Things I Hate About You and She’s All Thai are very likely to bring a smile to your father’s face. Screwball (荒诞的) comedies might be your father’s cup of tea. Some comedies from the 1930s, 40s and 50s have stood the test of time and are still interesting. Also, there are a number of channels where people can watch comedians in high spirits.
If your father already has close friends to exchange jokes with, it’s to his great advantage. But your father can also seek out new friends who have a lighter, more cheerful and mirthful way to life.
People are often in humorous situations at work, at home and in life, but to what degree do we take note of them? You can encourage your father to note humorous situations all around him. If he begins to notice this, soon enough, he begins to actively seek them. Before he knows it, his search for a humor-filled life becomes a significant part of his day.
28. What do the Dilbert series and The Far Side series have in common?
A. They’re in the form of short stories. B. They have many jokes about office life.
C. They can bring much laughter to people. D. They became popular soon after publication.
29. The underlined word “mirthful” in Paragraph 4 means ______.
A. joyful B. graceful C. puzzling D. regular
30. What’s implied in the last paragraph?
A. Humorous situations can hardly be ignored. B. Humorous situations can be created actively.
C. People should spend time with positive people. D. People should learn to discover humorous moments.
第二节 (共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
You’re standing at a city bus stop, waiting for a bus to arrive. You wait and wait. 31 But you haven’t seen one for at least 20 minutes. Finally, a bus full of people arrives. Just as you try to get on the bus, you see another bus coming down the street, and another one behind it!
What’s going on? Why do buses always seem to come in bunches (成群) instead of at regular intervals (固定间隔)?
32 They say that passengers only remember the few times when buses arrive at a stop in bunching, but forget the many more times when buses arrive regularly.
However, other people believe that bunching (成群而来) can happen quite often. 33 If each stop had the same number of passengers waiting, the buses would keep to their schedule. But usually there are many people at some stops and no one at others.
Suppose many people happen to gather at a particular stop. 34 So the first bus gets delayed (耽误) and the bus behind it catches up with it a bit. When the second bus arrives at the same stop, there are fewer passengers left, so the bus goes on its way quickly. Meanwhile, the first bus arrives at its next stop a little later than usual, so it will take more time for passengers to get on. 35 Then, the two buses end up traveling together. If the route is a long one, a third bus could eventually catch up with the first two.
A. There’s supposed to be a bus every 10 minutes.
B. But you don’t know the exact time the bus will arrive.
C. The reason is that the number of passengers at stops is different.
D. After several more stops, the second bus catches up with the first.
E. Some people believe that bus bunching doesn’t happen very often.
F. Find the probability that the waiting time is longer than you expected.
G. It takes longer than usual for the passengers to board the first bus that arrives.
