A books-for-food program in Guatemala is helping feed needy children as hunger rates rise during the pandemic(疫情). It is run by a local nonprofit organization that aims to feed nearly 400 children.
The program is simple. People choose a book they want from a list of donated titles, and in return give bags of Incaparina, a high-protein drink mix. Bonifaz Diaz works for the program. By bringing the books-for-food program directly to people's homes, Diaz makes sure donations keep flowing. He has traveled more than 2,000 kilometers on his bicycle, delivered loads of books and carried back thousands of kilograms of Incaparina for the nonprofit group 32 Volcanoes. Diaz sometimes pulls a small cart that helps him carry up to 57 kilograms of product. He has traveled as far as 60 kilometers for a delivery to a town in the Western Highlands, where road conditions are poor.
Nearly a year into the books-for-food program, two more cyclists have joined Diaz and donations keep flowing in. Ana Castillo is a 29-year-old high school teacher who recently received the sociology book from Diaz. She donates to the program often. The 1.8 kilograms of Incaparina she provided will help one family eat for a month.
Castillo looks forward to choosing her books from the titles Diaz posts on social media. She also loves the feeling of a “growing circle” of giving and receiving. “You might not get to those places, but your help can.” she says.
Diaz says he plans to continue cycling against hunger as long as the need exists. He has faced his own economic difficulties since the theater company he co-founded closed last spring. But the program has kept him active. "It's an opportunity to serve in which we all benefit. "Diaz said.
24. What is the purpose of the program?
A. To serve the readers.
B. To produce Incaparina.
C. To fight the pandemic.
D. To offer poor children food.
25. What did Diaz do for the program?
A. He set up a social media.
B. He made donations frequently.
C. He traveled to deliver books and food.
D. He rented a cart to carry goods.
26. How is the program going now?
A. Only two cyclists work for it.
B. More people are involved in it.
C. Over 400 adults benefit from it.
D. Financial difficulties put it to an end.
27. Which word best describes Diaz's attitude towards the program?
A. Supportive. B. Indifferent. C. Tolerant. D. Unwilling

An Australian-based scientist announced yesterday he had made a step forward in forensic (用于法庭的) DNA testing so that an individual can be identified by a single cell.
Ian Findlay, from the Australian Genome Research Facility at the University of Queensland, said current DNA testing required 200 to 500 cells to gain a similar level of accuracy. “What we have done has brought that down to one cell,” Dr Findlay said after releasing details of his DNA testing technique at a Sydney conference.
The technology could allow investigators to pick up DNA identities from plastic cards and even build up a complete history of the people who have handled a paper document.
“You’d have to wear a space suit to stop yourself from leaving traces. You can identify cells on the paper, so you can work out where it’s come from and who’s touched it,” he said.
The technique could also be used to trace the thrower of a punch from cells left behind on the skin of their victim. Even the wearing of latex(橡胶) gloves would not help: small cells can pass through the gloves, and the constant flow of genetic material given off by the human body would leave further evidence.
“We gained a skin cell from a document dating back 30 years and managed to gain a DNA fingerprint. DNA evidence can remain fresh for decades, perhaps even centuries,” Dr Findlay said. “The potential for this technology to solve unsolved crimes is great,” he said.
But Dr Findlay, named scientist of the year in 1998 by the European Society of Human Genetics, said the new testing needed to be scientifically validated, which would take up to five years.
He said, “There are serious consequences taking on technologies too early. The public have to be sure that they have the utmost confidence in the security and court systems.”
28. The main advantage of the new technology is that ______.
A. a higher level of accuracy can be acquired with a single cell
B. it has brought down the cost of DNA testing
C. a single cell can identify an individual
D. it needs less than 200 cells to gain a certain level of accuracy
29. According to Ian Findlay, the new technology can ______.
A. help to pick up DNA identities more easily
B. make the process of DNA testing much more simplified
C. help to keep DNA evidence fresh for decades and even centuries
D. be widely used in five years at most
30. The underlined word “validated” means ______.
A. imagined B. confirmed C. supposed D. criticized
31. The aim of the passage is to ______.
A. praise Ian Findlay for his work
B. report a piece of interesting news
C. inform us of the wide use of DNA testing
D. tell us a recent improvement in DNA testing.
D
Whales are big, but why aren’t they even bigger? A new study says the key factor is how many calories they can take in. Researchers came to this conclusion after using small boats to chase down 300 whales of various species around the world. They reached out with long poles to attach sensors (传感器) to the creatures, allowing them to record what whales were doing as they dived for food.
The study included 90 blue whales, the biggest animals ever to live. Size estimates vary, but they can grow to about 100 feet long and weigh more than 100 tons, according to the American Cetacean Society. The research also included sperm whales, the biggest whales with teeth; they can grow to about 60 feet in length.
Toothed whales hunt their prey (猎物) one at a time, seeking them out in the dark depths with a sonar-like detection. But as their body size increases, their hunting style becomes progressively less efficient — they take in fewer calories from their meals than the number they burn in each dive. That's a result of the limited availability of prey.
Blue whales grow bigger because they feed in a much different and more efficient way, the researchers reported. They open their mouths wide to take in an enormous volume of water — even bigger than their body size — as they swim along. They then close their mouths and strain the water out through a sieve-like filter (过滤器), trapping huge numbers of tiny shrimp-like creatures called krill. “That allows them to take advantage of a very large prey resource that’s very rich in a small amount of time,” said Jeremy Goldbogen of Stanford University, another member of the research team. “They get a huge bang for the buck.”
So why aren’t they even bigger than they are? “Perhaps blue whales are limited by the seasonal nature of the most nutritious krill patches, which grow huge and dense in the summer,” Goldbogen said. “And calculations indicate that to sustain a blue whale that’s 115 feet long, you’d need a density of prey that is just not seen anywhere in the world.”
32. How did researchers conduct the study?
A. By recording whales’ sound from sensors. B. By tracking whales with devices.
C. By filming whales’ preying on boats. D. By detecting whales with poles.
33. What do we know about toothed whales?
A. They can grow to about 100 feet long.
B. They seek prey in the shallow(浅的) waters.
C. They hunt less efficiently as they grow older.
D. They dive consuming more calories as they grow bigger.
34. What makes blue whales different from toothed whales in size?
A. Blue whales eat more varieties of foods. B. Blue whales hunt in the deep sea.
C. Blue whales hunt for food more efficiently. D. Blue whales have big mouths.
35. What does the last sentence in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Whales consume more calories than they obtain.
B. Whales get a greater harvest from preying.
C. Preying becomes easier than expected.
D. Preying takes more time than before.

It’s also important to know how to avoid daydreams for those times when you really need to concentrate. “Mindfulness”, being focused, is a tool that some people use to avoid falling asleep. 39 .
Finally, you never know what wonderful idea might strike while your mind has moved slowly away. 40 .
Always remember that your best ideas might come when your head is actually in the clouds.

E. It involves slow, steady breathing for self-control that helps people stay calm and attentive.
F. Therefore, it’s a good idea to keep a notebook or voice recorder nearby when you’re in the daydream zone.

第二节:书面表达(满分25分)
Dear Peter,
It’s great to hear from you. Delighted to know you have a great interest in Chinese scientists, I’m writing to introduce one top scientist to you.
Of all the Chinese scientists, I admire Yuan Longping most. Yuan Longping was the top rice scientist in China, renowned for developing the first hybrid rice strain. Having spent years in hybrid rice research, he was able to increase rice harvests without expanding the area of the fields. In addition, he circulated his knowledge in other less developed countries in order to rid the world of hunger. Even though he was awarded the “Medal of the Republic”, he didn’t care about being famous. Instead, he devoted his life to the research and made outstanding contributions to world food supply. Inspired by his dedication, I am determined to work harder and spare no efforts to fulfill my own dreams.
Are you interested in knowing more about Dr. Yuan? Please let me know and I would like to search for more information and share it with you.
Yours,
Li Hua
