If this time last year you had told me that an exercise bike would save me, I’d have insisted you were wrong. I’d have protested that I’m not an athlete by any stretch. My coordination is lacking, my endurance is spotty (时好时坏的) and my speed is set squarely (干脆地) on tortoise.
In Grade 7, my physical education teacher watched me, eyebrow raised, as I tried to jump up and touch a marker on the wall. “You're doing pretty well in my class," he said, “for someone with no ability at all.”
In high school, I wasn’t suitable for a single team. I was bookish and slow, and that self-image (of being better suited to quiet reading and leisurely walks) remained with me for my entire life.
I discovered running in my 20s, and I enjoyed the feeling of quiet accomplishment - without the fear of letting down teammates. I tried yoga and enjoyed strength training classes, but I always prioritized mental pursuits over physical ones.
It was my mental wellness that finally forced me to rethink my fitness. This winter, I found myself bowing under the weight of exhaustion. I knew something had to change. I needed an outlet to release the tension of months of video conferencing, on-and-off solo parenting and virtual school. A run with my daughter wasn’t going to cut it.
I settled on an exercise bike with a big screen and the promise of life-changing results. Since early March, I’ve hardly missed a day on my bike. I’m not the fastest. But I’m finally learning that movement isn’t necessarily about athleticism (运动才能). More than anything, it’s about feeding your mind. It’s the feeling of accomplishment when you finish something hard outside of your comfort zone.
A handful of people will find glory in athleticism. For the rest of us, the reward is more personal: better sleep, improved mood and boosted confidence. I’m not destined (注定的) for the Olympics. But this was never about ability. That’s what I wish my gym teacher had told me.
If only he’d said, “You’re doing really well in my class. Look at your determination.”

    24. Why didn’t the author exercise before her 20s?
    A. She had no athletic talent.
    B. She thought little of physical pursuits.
    C. She focused on academic performance.
    D. She wasn’t accepted by a single sports team.
    25. What motivated the author to transfer her attention to physical exercises?
    A. Her fear of getting sick.
    B. Her daughter’s suggestions.
    C. Her longing to let go of pressure.
    D. Her desire to get out of her comfort zone.
    26. What happened after the author rode her exercise bike?
    A. She discovered her athleticism.
    B. She quickly improved her cycling skills.
    C. She gained a sense of accomplishment.
    D. She was praised by her gym teacher.
    27. What does the author think is most important about exercise?
    A. Ability. B. Confidence. C. Strength. D. Strong will.
    C
A project funded by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission shows the return of sea otters(海獭) to Southeast Alaska over the past 50 years has been a conservation success story. Erin Foster, a Nearshore Ecology PhD from Hakai Institute, suggests that sea otter restoration can enhance the genetic diversity of their habitat.
Sea otters live in coastal habitats, including eelgrass(大叶藻) fields, where they feed on rock crabs, often creating foraging pits (觅食坑) in the eelgrass. Foster looked at the impact of this activity on eelgrass genetic diversity by comparing eelgrass ecosystems with no otters (pre-disturbance) to those where otters had been reintroduced (post-disturbance). It was found that genetic diversity was higher in the areas with otters. Foster argues that genetic richness is of central importance here because it is crucial to resilience (恢复力) and the evolution of clonal(无性繁殖的) organisms. Why? The primary mode of expansion for eelgrass is clonal growth, but sea otter digging stimulates sexual reproduction and opens up areas for the seeds to settle.
Even though disturbance enhances the diversity and dynamics of many of the world’s ecosystems, its influence on genetic diversity remains poorly appreciated. The amount of disturbance that was observed in the eelgrass fields was relatively low: about 5% of the seafloor had foraging pits, although the pits last only for a short time, and visual observations likely underestimate the amount of activity. The disturbance theory, presented in 1978 on the basis of evidence from tropical forests and coral reefs, is well known to ecologists. Early studies showed that disturbance could increase species diversity, but researches on the effects of disturbance on genetic diversity are relatively rare.
The role of sea otters in eelgrass fields provides insights into how genetic diversity can change when species interactions are lost—and how these patterns can be restored. Without sea otters, genetic diversity appears to decline; when they return, so does diversity. Sea otters were extirpated from much of their range during intense commercial harvests in the 18th and 19th centuries. As their range expanded in the 1960s and 1970s after the disturbance, and their habitats became better understood, sea otters became symbolic species in ecology.
The role of sea otters in biogeochemical processes such as the carbon cycle has gained attention in recent years. During the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), more attention should be paid to rebuilding animal populations and the key ecological functions they provide.
    28. We can learn from the passage that ________.
    A. eelgrass ecosystems are established by sea otters
    B. eelgrass expands through clonal growth due to sea otters
    C. the return of sea otters can increase genetic diversity of eelgrass
    D. eelgrass plays a more important role in the ecosystem than sea otters
    29. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
    A. The ecological disturbance theory lacks basic proof.
    B. The previous researches on disturbance are insufficient.
    C. The necessity of the research on disturbance is doubted.
    D. The effects of disturbance on genetic diversity are relatively small.
    30. What does the underlined word “extirpated” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. Removed. B. Restored. C. Reproduced. D. Relocated.
    31. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
    A. The Ecological Function of Eelgrass Fields
    B. The Commitment to Ecological Conservation
    C. The Strategy for Increasing Sea Otter Population
    D. The Benefit of Disturbance on Genetic Diversity
    D
Rumors (传闻) had floated through the halls that the two girls were going to fight, by the time Marquita Riley, 16, and Aalivah Hudson 17 ended up in their school’s “peace room”.
The peace room at Manley is a part of the school’s restorative justice initiative, a growing social movement that, among other things, focuses on healing and teaching how to solve conflicts. The philosophy aims to bring together victims and offenders to cooperatively work through their problems.
The concept is increasingly being used in schools, community centers and churches in Chicago as a way to teach young people how to analyze their anger. They learn to confront tension before it turns violent. It is also being used as an alternative to punitive (处罚的) measures, like suspensions(停学) and arrests, which can lead to more trouble for hurting communities.
The idea is that “when harm happens or someone misbehaves, there needs to be a process of restoration in order for the community to move forward,” said Ilana Zafran of Umoja Student Development. Umoja runs restorative justice programs in Chicago schools.
The concept forces all sides in a disagreement to communicate and understand one another instead of resorting to violence. There may still be punishment for wrongdoing, but restorative justice emphasizes identifying hurt and thinking of ways to fix it.
“A lot of our kids don't want to be involved in fights. They don’t want to be suspended or away from school,” Jackson said. “We had to create an environment of peace. High school has to be a pleasurable experience for our kids. If they come here and feel the same anxiety they feel in the streets, how can we expect them to stay?”
Among the people there were Marquita and Aaliyah, the two girls rumored to be gearing up for a major fight. After another 20 minutes of discussion, they agreed they had simply misunderstood each other. The girls decided they would not fight, and promised they would talk it over if they found themselves facing tension again.
    32. What may result from lack of restorative justice in communities?
    A. Alternatives to punishment. B. Violent tension.
    C. Processes of restoration. D. Controlled anger.
    33. Which can replace the underlined phrase in Paragraph 5?
    A. Turning to. B. Putting up with.
    C. Looking back to. D. Making up for.
    34. Why does the author give an example of Marquita and Aaliyah?
    A. To prove effectiveness of peace room.
    B. To show the harm of campus violence.
    C. To explain the reason for suspension.
    D. To introduce kids' school experiences.
    35. What does the passage mainly talk about?
    A. The way to develop students’ team work in schools.
    B. Ways people can use to control their anger.
    C. How high school students misbehave when facing disagreement.
    D. A school’s “peace room” aims to end fighting in the halls.

Here, I would like to appeal to each of us to do some labor, whether doing some cleaning or washing, as labor can not merely help beautify our living environment, but more importantly, build up our body and shape our characters.
