When I felt strnger, I went t my lcal shp. It still hurt when I mved my face, s when I ran int a friend, I culdn’t say anything. The friend wanted my pinin n an eye-catching Twitter disagreement and lked disappinted that I didn’t seem bthered. I was nt bthered – and it felt gd t remember that.
Later I visited my mm, wh chatted away as usual. She didn’t even ntice that I was n silent mde. This cnfirms my belief that my family rle is part daughter, part audience.
Peple say silence is glden. Smetimes it is wise t say nthing and t let peple reveal themselves. Perhaps that is the wisdm f the wisdm tth. Maybe when they arrive with all their pain, frcing us – even just fr a while – t mve ur sre muths a little less, they give a lessn fr living well: Listen, bserve and try being quiet nw and then. Plastic pllutin has lng been a prblem, but nw it’s gtten t a new height – literally.
Micrplastics, referring t plastic pieces and particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter, have been fund n Munt Qmlangma as high as 8,440 meters abve sea level, just 408.86 meters belw the peak f the muntain, accrding t a recent study published in the jurnal One Earth.
“These are the highest micrplastics discvered s far,” lead authr Imgen Napper frm the University f Plymuth, UK, said in a statement.
Scientists cllected snw and water samples frm 19 different lcatins frm 4,200 meters abve sea level all the way up t the peak f Munt Qmlangma. They fund micrplastics in all the water samples and part f the snw samples. The mst plluted sample was frm the Base Camp in Nepal, where mst human activity n the muntain is cncentrated. It had 79 particles f micrplastics per liter f snw.
But hw have these fragments made it all this way and in such a great abundance? The answer is bvius – human activities. It is climbers wh bring plastic prducts t the muntain. Even if they dn’t litter, just walking fr 20 minutes r pening a bttle f water can release micrplastics int the envirnment.
The fact is that plastic pllutin has reached even the mst remte places n Earth. Researchers even fund a plastic bag at the deepest pint in the wrld’s ceans – in the Mariana Trench, lcated in the Pacific Ocean. The bag is the same as the nes cmmnly used in grcery stres.
“What we dn’t yet fully knw is the ptential prblems these tiny pieces f plastic culd be having t ecsystems, t rganisms (微生物) and even t ur wn health as well,” said Christian Dunn f Bangr University, UK.
Then what can we d? “We need t start fcusing n deeper technlgical slutins that fcus n micrplastics, like changing fabric design and adding natural fibers instead f plastic when pssible,” Napper said.
Where did Napper’s team find the micrplastics?
A. At 408.86 meters belw the peak f Munt Qmlangma.
B. In all water and snw samples cllected.
C. At 4,200 meters abve the Everest Base Camp.
D. At the ft f Munt Qmlangma.
Hw can we prtect Munt Qmlangma frm micrplastics?
A. By stpping littering.B. By aviding bttled water.
C. By reducing human activities.D. By limiting use f equipment.
34. What did Napper suggest?
A. Prmting new styles f clthes.B. Imprving technlgy fr ecsystems.
C. Replacing plastic with natural fibers.D. Researching the harm f micrplastics.
35. What is the best title fr the passage?
A. Plastic Pllutin Reaches New Height
B. Hw t Prevent Plastic Pllutin
C. Human Activities Lead t Pllutin
D. Plastic Pllutin Damaged the Ecsystem
