Crals are made up f hundreds f thusands f small rganisms (微生物). Fr the past five years, researchers in Hawaii and Australia have been engineering crals inside a lab t see if they culd better resist the effects f climate change.
The team tested three methds fr making crals that wuld be strng and healthy in nature. One is selective breeding(繁殖), aiming t prduce babies with desirable characteristics. The secnd methd subjected the crals t increasing temperatures t cnditin them t be able t survive in warm cean envirnments. The third invlved making changes t the algae (海藻) that prvide crals with necessary nutrients.
The leader f the prject, Kira Hughes, said all the methds prved successful in the lab. She said sme scientists might wrry that such methds g against the natural prcesses f nature. But with the planet cntinuing t get warmer and warmer, she des nt see any better ptins. “We have t intervene(干预)in rder t make a change fr cral reefs t survive int the future,” Hughes said.
When cean temperatures rise, crals turn white, a prcess called bleaching. When this happens, crals can quickly becme sick and die. But fr years, scientists have been bserving crals that have survived bleaching. They are nw centering n thse healthy survivrs. Thse crals were used as the parents fr the newly created kinds.
A recent study fund bleaching t be the biggest current threat t the wrld’s cral reefs. The American space agency NASA has launched(发射)a new instrument designed t cllect data n vlcanic activity and air quality. The device arrived at the Internatinal Space Statin n February 21. NASA hpes the small rbiting instrument culd help predict a vlcanic eruptin befre an explsin happens.
NASA calls the instrument NACHOS, which stands fr Nansat Atmspheric Chemistry Hyperspectral Observatin System. It cntains imaging sensrs designed t recgnize gases like sulfur dixide and nitrgen dixide. The presence f thse gases can signal pssible vlcanic activity.
NACHOS was built t bserve trace gases in areas as small as 0. 4 square kilmeters. The six-kilgram instrument is set t be deplyed(部署)three mnths later. It will perate attached t a CubeSat, a small satellite weighing less than 10 kilgrams. NASA says NACHOS will bserve frm abut 480 kilmeters abve Earth’s surface.
NASA cnsiders the instrument a “prttype”, meaning its peratins and bservatins will be studied during its rbit, which is expected t last ne year. During its year-lng missin, the team will study the instrument’s perfrmance t learn whether the technlgy shuld be further develped.
Steve Lve is a scientist with the Department f Energy. He said a vlcan may give ff sulfur dixide befre there is any vlcanic activity. Such a device culd help emergency fficials take early measures t prtect citizens and prperty frm vlcanic eruptins. But NASA says NACHOS can help scientists n Earth in ther ways, t.
The instrument can als be used t bserve gas levels frm natural and human-made surces that can be harmful t humans. One gas that NACHOS will search fr is nitrgen dixide, which ften cmes frm burning fssil fuels. Identifying the gas culd help scientists find areas with high levels f harmful pllutin.
“When we recgnize that these gases are present and can lcalize their surces, we have the pprtunity t take actin and reduce harmful health influences,” Lve said.
In the past, NASA created satellites t bserve these kinds f gases. But Lve said thse required high-reslutin images and sensitive instruments that were cstly t prduce and perate.
Smaller devices, like NACHOS, culd enable a wider use f the technlgy at a much lwer cst. If it prves successful, the technlgy culd als be used in Earth-based systems, NASA says.
32. What will NACHOS d t find pssible vlcanic activity?
A. Analyze past explsins. B. Observe the clr f cluds.
C. Identify certain gases. D. Cllect vlcanic pictures.
33. Hw is paragraph 3 mainly develped?
A. By listing detailed facts. B. By making cmparisns.
C. By fllwing time rder. D. By making classificatins.
34. What can NACHOS d accrding t the text?
A. Reduce harmful gas levels. B. Delay vlcanic eruptins.
C. Imprve satellites’ functins. D. Help prtect peple’s health.
35. Which f the fllwing is an advantage f NACHOS ver satellites?
A. It csts much less. B. It can be used in Earth-based systems.
C. It wrks lnger. D. It can be easily cntrlled.
