Crals are made up f hundreds f thusands f small rganisms （微生物）. Fr the past five years, researchers in Hawaii and Australia have been engineering crals inside a lab t see if they culd better resist the effects f climate change.
The team tested three methds fr making crals that wuld be strng and healthy in nature. One is selective breeding（繁殖）, aiming t prduce babies with desirable characteristics. The secnd methd subjected the crals t increasing temperatures t cnditin them t be able t survive in warm cean envirnments. The leader f the prject, Kira Hughes, said all the methds prved successful in the lab. She said sme scientists might wrry that such methds g against the natural prcesses f nature. When cean temperatures rise, crals turn white, a prcess called bleaching. When this happens, crals can quickly becme sick and die. But fr years, scientists have been bserving crals that have survived bleaching. They are nw centering n thse healthy survivrs. Thse crals were used as the parents fr the newly created kinds.
A recent study fund bleaching t be the biggest current threat t the wrld’s cral reefs. He is the chief scientist at Hawaii’s Cral Resilience Lab.

The American space agency NASA has launched（发射）a new instrument designed t cllect data n vlcanic activity and air quality. The device arrived at the Internatinal Space Statin n February 21. NASA hpes the small rbiting instrument culd help predict a vlcanic eruptin befre an explsin happens.
NASA calls the instrument NACHOS, which stands fr Nansat Atmspheric Chemistry Hyperspectral Observatin System. It cntains imaging sensrs designed t recgnize gases like sulfur dixide and nitrgen dixide. The presence f thse gases can signal pssible vlcanic activity.
NACHOS was built t bserve trace gases in areas as small as 0. 4 square kilmeters. The six-kilgram instrument is set t be deplyed（部署）three mnths later. It will perate attached t a CubeSat, a small satellite weighing less than 10 kilgrams. NASA says NACHOS will bserve frm abut 480 kilmeters abve Earth’s surface.
NASA cnsiders the instrument a “prttype”, meaning its peratins and bservatins will be studied during its rbit, which is expected t last ne year. During its year-lng missin, the team will study the instrument’s perfrmance t learn whether the technlgy shuld be further develped.
