My name is Tny Fntes. I am a native Califrnian. In 1979 I went diving at the Great Barrier Reef fr the first time. I was s amazed by the experience that I decided t stay in Australia. Fr the past 42 years, I have lived at Airlie Beach. It’s a small seaside cmmunity in the heart f the Great Barrier Reef.
As a dive instructr(教练), I spend much f my time underwater. Thrugh careful bservatin, I have nted heartbreaking changes in the envirnment. One f them is the increase in cral bleaching(珊瑚白化). This serius prblem happens when the green and brwn cral reefs(礁)lse their clrs and turn white. In the early 1980s, bleaching was nt a serius prblem. By the mid-1990s, it was happening each summer. The late 1990s and early 2000s brught sme f the largest bleaching events n recrd. Yu culd even see the bleached cral frm the air. Unlike befre, these mre recent bleaching events have resulted in the death f the cral.
Cral bleaching and many ther dangerus changes are being caused by climate change, especially glbal warming. It ften takes ten years fr a cral reef t fully recver. Hwever, mre bleaching events are taking place each year. It’s hard t say whether the bleached cral will ever recver. If the wrld’s cral reefs are t survive, we must keep the glbal increase in cean temperature belw tw degrees Celsius. We need t reduce ur emissins(排放)f carbn dixide and pay mre attentin t the health f ur ceans. All f us can d smething t save the cral. Take actin nw. “The safety prblem is a big ne,” says Je Mahney, wh quickly discvered he wasn’t alne in his wrries. On campus turs ther parents viced similar wrries, and the same questin was always asked: What abut crime? But when cllege fficials always gave the same answer—“That’s nt a prblem here.”—Mahney began t feel uneasy.
“N crime whatsever?” cmments(评论)Mahney tday. “I just dn’t believe it.” In 1999 the U.S. Department f Educatin had reprts f nearly 400,000 serius crimes n r arund ur campuses. “Parents need t understand that times have changed since they went t cllege,” says David Nichls, authr f Creating a Safe Campus. “Campus crime mirrrs(反映)the rest f the cuntry.”
But getting exact infrmatin isn’t easy. Clleges must reprt crime statistics(统计数字)by law, but sme hld back fr fear f bad publicity(名声), leaving the hnest nes lking dangerus. “The truth may nt always be serius.” warns S. Daniel Carter f Security n Campus, Inc., the cuntry’s leading campus safety watchdg(监视)grup.

Octpuses(章鱼)are kind f like aliens. They are amazing in many ways. They have three hearts. They can walk. They can swim, and they can drive themselves frward at high speed. They can change clur and cpy what ther animals d. They even knw hw t pen screw-tp jars(带螺旋盖的罐子)and hw t use tls!
Octpuses are mllusks(软体动物). But unlike many ther mllusks, they dn’t have a shell. This allws them t pass thrugh tiny spaces. Althugh ctpuses mainly eat small fish, they are able t attack and kill small sharks. They make the sharks unable t breathe by cvering their gill(锡)penings.
One thing that makes ctpuses seem like aliens is their blue bld. It is much better at transprting xygen in cld and lw-xygen cnditins(like the deep sea) than ur red bld. Octpuses lse energy easily. This may help explain their utstanding intelligence: They can’t chase after their prey(猎物)fr a lng time. They must use clever tricks.
As a hunter, an ctpus brings prey under cntrl thrugh the use f a pwerful pisn(毒). The smaller the ctpus, the strnger the pisn. The ten-centimeter-lng blue-ringed ctpus is s pisnus that it can easily kill a grwn man. Octpuses themselves can be delicius prey t many different animals in the vast(辽阔的)cean, but they are clever enugh t knw hw t keep themselves safe many f the times. With their clur changing skin, ctpuses can easily “hide” themselves r flash alarming clurs t frighten their enemies away. If that desn’t wrk, the ctpus will release a clud f dark ink and quickly escape.
Perhaps the mst amazing part f an ctpus is its arms. They can turn in any directin. The arms are t cmplex t be cntrlled frm a central brain. Instead, they wrk almst independently. An ctpus gives instructins and believes that they will be carried ut. This means that the animal desn’t have a very gd idea f where its arms are. They can’t wrk ut the shape f smething by feeling it like we can.
