He lost himself in his task and didn’t look up at anyone passing by. We kept ___15___ him as we walked around the parking lot and talked between ourselves about what he might be doing. I thought he was breaking stones to make sand, but why would he do that?

___16___, we decided to go up and speak to him. He was breaking pieces of leftover bread he had collected to make ___17___ for the birds that come there every morning. The large pieces of bread would be ___18___ for the birds to eat, so he grounded(研磨)them into a fine powder(粉末)with the rock.

It was moving to hear that he’s been doing this every ___19___, by himself, for the last three or four years. When we asked him what reminds him to do this simple, small but devoted act of service, he shrugged his shoulders and said, “It’s just something small I do so that the leftover bread doesn’t go into the rubbish and the birds get food.”

My dad was a fisherman. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his mom and dad and the other kids that were still at home.

Dad was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the sea for his catch. When you got close to him, you smelled the sea.

When the weather was bad, he would drive me to school in his old truck. It was older than he was. You could hear it coming from a couple of blocks away. On the way, I would shrink down into(缩进) the seat hoping to disappear. He would stop right in front of the school, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was making me feel really uncomfortable! Here I was twelve years old, and my dad would lean over and kiss me good-bye!

I remembered the day I thought I was too old for a good-bye kiss. When we got to school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean towards me, but I put my hand up and said, “No, Dad.” It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way. “Dad, I’m too old for a good-bye kiss.”

My dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up. I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked out. “You’re right,” he said. “You are a big boy ... a man. I won’t kiss you any more.”

It wasn’t long after that when my dad went to sea and never came back. It was the day when most of the boats stayed in, but not dad.

Guys, you don’t know what I would give to have my dad give me just one more kiss on the cheek...to feel his rough old face...to smell the sea on him...to feel his arm around my neck. I wish I had been a man then. If I had been a man, I would be a man. I would never have told my dad I was too old for a good-bye kiss.

28From the passage, we know that probably the writer’s father ___________.

Awas a successful businessman Bhad an accident and died at sea

Cwas good at driving cars Ddrove the writer to school every day

29It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the writer _________.

Bwould give up what he had to look for his father

Choped to see his father and asked for another kiss

Dregretted having refused his father’s kiss

30What’s the best title for the passage?

AMy poor dad BAn uncomfortable experience

CA good-bye kiss DThe smell of the sea

Romeo had been in a good mood all morning. He’d had a dream that he was about to receive some good news. He was lighthearted and he walked through the streets of magic feeling that his feet weren’t touching the ground.

His dream was that Juliet had found him dead. And although it was a strange dream that allowed a dead man to think and feel, she had brought him back to life with her kisses and made him as happy as a king. He smiled as he walked. It just showed how wonderful the real thing was if even dreams about love could make you feel so good.

Wasn’t that his man, Balthazar, coming down the street? It was. It must be good news from Verona.

“Balthazar,” he said. “Have you got a letter from the Friar? How’s my wife? And my father? Is he alright?” Romeo did a little jig, dancing round his servant. “How’s Juliet? I’m asking that because if she’s well then everything is wonderful.”

Balthazar said nothing. He stared at the ground, avoiding Romeo’s eyes. Romeo stopped his dancing. Balthazar was crying.

“She’s well. So nothing can be wrong.” said Balthazar. He turned his back on Romeo and blurted, “ Her body’s sleeping in Capulet’s tomb and her soul’s among the angels.”

Romeo felt cold, even in that terrible heat. He expressed his doubt about his servant’s words.

“I watched them putting her in their family vault (墓穴),” said Balthazar, “and then came straight to you.” He saw the pain in Romeo’s face and wished he could think of some way of cheering him up.

“It can’t be!” said Romeo at last. He turned away. “The stars are against us. But I won’t give in to them!” He turned back to Balthazar. “Go and get me some paper and ink and hire us some horses.”

“I beg of you, sir,” said Balthazar, “be careful. You’re so sad and I ’m worried that something bad is going to happen.”

“You’re wrong, said Romeo.” “Just do as I tell you. Haven’t you got a letter from the Friar?”

    “No.”

“It doesn’t matter. Go and get the horses. I’ll see you later.”

    -----Adapted from Remeo and Juliet

31What does the underlined word “lighthearted” mean in the first paragraph?

    AHappy. BWorried. CAngry. DNervous

32How did Romeo reply to Balthazar’s news?

AHe was worried that Balthazar was too tired. BHe couldn’t believe it.

CHe knew what happened already. DHe didn’t care about it.

33Which do you think will happen next?

ARomeo is excitedly going back with his servant Balthazar.

BRomeo will ride his horse to the angels to take Juliet back.

CRomeo is going to visit the place where Juliet lived.

DRomeo is going to the Friar’s home to cheer Juliet up.

There are a few different kinds of hockey, including ice hockey and field hockey. One of the biggest differences between the sports is the surface on which they are played. Some suggest that field hockey has been around for thousands of years. There is evidence to support that a similar game was played by ancient people in Greece and Rome.

Ice hockey has been around, officially, since the late 1800s. This is when the rules were made by J.ACreighton. The first league was in place by the early 1900s. Later, ice hockey became an Olympic sport.

Hockey is a team sport with six players on two opposing teams. The game is played on a rink of ice with two goals at each end. The standard rink size is 200 feet long and 85 feet wide. Players, all wearing ice skates, move a disk called a puck around the ice. Their purpose is to shoot the puck into the other team’s goal. The goal is a net that is six feet wide and four feet tall. Each goal is guarded by a goalie, who is the only one that can touch the puck with his hockey stick as well as any part of his body. Goalies can even use their feet to stop the puck from getting into the net.

A hockey stick is what players use to move the puck. It is usually 5 to 6 feet in length with a flat blade at the end. Hockey sticks are straight sticks made of wood. The puck is made of vulcanized (硫化的) rubber, which is a much better material than the first pucks. It’s said that the first informal hockey games were played with pucks made of frozen cow waste! The modern puck is typically one inch thick and three inches in diameter.

36        Instead, the names of the winning hockey team’s players, coaches, and managers are added to the presentation cup. There are five rings of names. The oldest ring is removed when a new one is added.

Today, ice hockey is the most popular team sport played on the ice all over the world.

34From the passage, we know that ________ decides what kind of hockey it is.

Athe rules to follow Bthe time of appearing

Cthe material of puck Dthe place for playing

35What is the correct order of the events in ice hockey’s history?

    六、阅读填表

Many of us have had this experience: we lie down in a bed other than our own, perhaps at a friend’s house or in a hotel room, and find it difficult to fall asleep.

    Why does it happen?

A new study shows one reason is what the scientists call “first night effect”. They believe that one side of the brain acts as a “night watch” to warn us about possible dangers. It prevented us from getting to sleep on the first night in a new environment.

For the study, 35 young volunteers were told to sleep in a lab for several days as researchers watched their brain activities.

According to the researchers, on their first night, the left brains were more active than the right brains and people had a hard time sleeping. However, left-brain activity reduced as days went by, falling even to the point of complete calm. In this process, the volunteers got better and better sleep experience.

The findings suggest that the different rhythms of the sides of the brain influence our sleep. When the two sides work differently, the balance between them is broken. So, the brain can’t relax and is sensitive (敏感的) to anything strange around.

“At some level, the brain is continuing to work ,even though you don’t realize it,” US professor Jerome Siege told Smithsonian Magazine. “If something unusual happens, you can be alert (警惕的).”

More surprisingly, this is like the way some animals sleep. Whales, dolphins, and many birds can sleep with half of their brain while the other half stays awake, with one eye staying open.

The researchers think that it is the result of evolution (进化) and works to protect us in possibly dangerous environments.

If you have ever had first night effects, researchers advise you to bring your own pillow or sleep in a room similar to your bedroom next time you sleep away from home.

As the Double Reduction policy has been carried out, we have changed a lot this term. We don’t have too much homework every day. And we needn’t go to after-school classes, for we have another two classes after school.

In my opinion, the policy is good for us. We have enough time to process new knowledge now. We have more chances to do experiments and learn from real life. This is a much better way to learn things than just hitting the books. We can also spend more time taking part in clubs and activities.

In order to get used to the new policy, I will make good use of the time at school, listen to our teachers carefully and take notes in class. I plan to finish our homework more effectively. And I also want to do some housework or volunteer work to develop some useful life skills.

In a word, the policy makes our life more interesting and relaxing.
