Our lives changed tracks the day our daughter was born. My wife and I felt settled in the United Kingdom — we’d even bought a house 6 months earlier — but the arrival of our daughter forced a moment of reflection. We wondered whether we should move back to our native Brazil. I remember looking down at our newborn baby and thinking about how different her life would be there. In our native country, we’d be closer to our family and culture. But in the United Kingdom, I had the funding and lab resources I needed for my costly and highly specialized research program. Would such a move sink my career?

Several events over the next few months nudged us further in the same direction. We heard that new professor positions had opened up at a university in our hometown, in departments that matched both of our research programs. Then, a few weeks later, I received a call from my brother, who told me that our father had passed away. A deep sadness made me feel that I was losing precious time with my loved ones.

There was no doubt that it was the right time to return to Brazil. We applied for the professorships and both received offers. It felt like our personal and professional lives were falling into place. It wasn’t easy getting started with my research in Brazil. However, I didn’t receive any startup funding for my lab and I had to share equipment with other professors. Nine years later, I still haven’t been able to perform the kind of experiments that U. K. funding would have allowed.

But looking back, I have no complaint. We’ve been able to have big meals with our extended family on weekends. We had a second child, and our kids are growing up close to their cousins who are around the same age. We are living the lives we wanted to live — working on rewarding research while staying true to what we feel is best for ourselves and for our family.

    24. What is the root reason for the family’s moving back home?

    A. Loss of a beloved family member. B.Eagerness to live in their culture .

    C. Concerns about their girl’s growth. D. Promising career choices in the future.

    25. What does the underlined phrase “nudged us further” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Strengthened our determination . B.Reduced our anxieties .

    C. Weighed the strengths and weaknesses. D. Increased our uncertainty.

    26. What is the author’s attitude toward life back at home?

    A. Regretful. B. Content.  C. Uncertain.   D. Disapproving.

    27. What is the main idea of the text?

    A. Where there’s love, there’s home.

    B. When trouble comes, it’s your family that supports you.

    C. Your children need your presence more than your presents.

    D. East or west, home is the best.

    C

The planting or woodlands in upland areas could play a key role in preventing the flooding which has increasingly affected communities across the world in recent years.

A new study by the University of Plymouth has shown that within just 15 years of being planted, native broad-leaf trees can have a great effect on soil's response during extreme weather events. It means that the huge amount of rainwater can be more readily absorbed, rather than simply running over the surface and into rivers where it probably causes severe flooding.

Scientists say their findings show planting more native woodlands in upland areas could be an effective and natural flood management tool. There have been a number of extreme rainfall and flooding events in recent years, and they are predicted to increase in both frequency and seriousness in the future as a result of human-caused climate change.

They show that in areas where new woodlands have been planted, the ability of soil to absorb water is almost double that of areas with no trees, associated with increases in soil macro-pores-(大孔隙)and reductions in soil compaction(压实). This means the speed at which rainwater enters rivers during rainfall events is obviously reduced, which helps lower peak flow.

However, the nature of the soil and location of the woodlands are also critical to their success, with steep hillside on the edge of upland areas providing the most effective location for tree plantations to serve as an effective flood prevention tool.

Dr Paul Lunt, Associate Professor in Environmental Science added, "There are a lot of weak upland catchment(集水)areas across the UK. However, by working with farmers and the government's farm woodland measures, this study has shown that damaged soil can recover rapidly. This is particularly obvious on hillsides which are traditionally not so good for farming. So there is an opportunity for a joined-up approach which could benefit the uplands themselves, but also those people living on and around them."

    28. What advantage does planting native woodlands in upland areas have?

    A. Taking in plenty of rainwater.         B. Preventing rainwater into the sky.

    C. Stopping the extreme weather.        D. Helping rainwater run over the surface.

    29. What can we infer from paragraph 3?

    A. Trees can help reduce soil macro-pores.

    B. New woodlands are related to extreme weather.

    C. Scientists affect the ability of soil to absorb water.

    D. Planting new woodlands may prevent serious flooding.

    30. What does Dr Paul Lunt mainly talk about?

    A. The way of reducing flooding risks.

    B. The measures of helping native farmers.

    C. The benefits of planting native woodlands.

    D. The cooperation between farmers and the government.

    31. Which is the best title for the text?

    A. Rainwater Will Ruin Mountainous Areas

    B. New Woodlands Can Help Reduce Flooding Risks

    C. Scientists Has Found Ways to Control Extreme Weather

    D. Farmers Have Planted Many Trees to Collect Rainwater

    D

Understanding the link between a clean environment and human life is not a new concept. In fact, it was noticed as early as ancient Rome. Today we see how green living has influenced our everyday lives. There is a growing community of people who embrace a zero waste lifestyle and make changes to the way they live to reduce their carbon footprint.

Living a zero waste lifestyle means doing one’s best to achieve the aim of not sending anything to a landfill. People who adopt this lifestyle ultimately cut down on their waste by reducing what they need and want. They reuse what they own, sending few things to be recycled.

Many people who adopt the zero waste lifestyle claim to be frustrated by the many harmful chemical substances found in beauty and cleaning products. They also find the uses of disposable items and excessive packaging. For example, how many times have we had to peel away layers of plastic wrap and cardboard before finally taking out the item which we had bought? Instead of buying pre-packed food and goods, those who identify with the zero waste philosophy tend to shop in stores that allow them to make purchases and bring their own cloth bags and glass jars to store their purchases.

Many people may have the misconception that it is easier to live a zero waste lifestyle in the West. Nevertheless, Malaysian environmental journalist, Ms. Aurora Tin, has proven that a zero waste lifestyle is possible even in the Asian context. Instead of going to the supermarket to buy pre-packaged foods, Ms. Tin now visits the wet market and brings her own bags for vegetables. She has even stopped using store-bought toothpaste and makes her own toothpaste from coconut oil and baking soda. This lifestyle may be too big a change for the average person, but we could follow her suit to make gradual changes to our own lives.

    32. Which of the following is a zero waste lifestyle?

    A. Choosing appliances that cost less money.

    B. Bringing a reusable container to take away food.

    C. Turning off a device to stop using power.

    D. Classifying the garbage before throwing it away.

    33. What may disappoint a person who adopts a zero waste lifestyle?

    A. Excessive packaging.             B. Recyclable cardboard.

    C. Glass jars to store purchases.       D. Natural substances in cleaning products.

    34. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

    A. How do people live a zero waste lifestyle.

    B. Why Ms. Tin chooses to live a zero waste lifestyle..

    C. It is easy to live a zero waste lifestyle in the West.

    D. We can also practice a zero waste lifestyle in Asia.

    35. What is the best title of the passage?

    A. Going green is more than a fashion.       B. Living a zero waste lifestyle.

    C. A zero waste lifestyle is easy to achieve.    D. Making environmentally-conscious decisions.

    A GIFT FOR GRANDPA

Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.

The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’ eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.

A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.

Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly “Grandpa, we are back!”

Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly (倔强地), “I can!” Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.

The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs...How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!

But now Grandpa couldn't get up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer him up.” Jack said. “Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But he hates birds being caged!” Jack shook his head.

Then a bright idea came to Jack’s mind. “Why not make a cane (拐杖) out of a young tree!”

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    读后续写

Berlin thought it was a good idea. When the two brothers reached an agreement, they quickly ran back to their grandfather’s house, got the tools they needed to make the cane, and ran back to the woods. Jack said, “What kind of tree should we pick for the walking stick?” Berlin thought for a moment and said, “I think we should choose a straight tree, so no knots will scratch grandpa’s hands.” Jack nodded his head in agreement. They found a straight tree and set to work. They cut the tree down, and with a knife they took the bark off. It was a wonderful tree, which was smooth and was just of the right size. They thought grandpa would love it.
Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa. When grandpa took the cane, his hands shook with joy, thinking, “This is made by my grandsons themselves. How precious it is!” Jack said, “Grandpa, we hope this cane will help you stand up and come with us to explore the woods.” Grandpa smiled and decided to give it a try so as not to make his grandchildren disappointed. He held the cane in his right hand and the arm of his chair in his left hand. He stood up with strength on his legs. Everyone was surprised and excited to see grandpa stand up. At that moment, Jack noticed a tear coming from the corner of his grandfather’s eye.
