It’s pssible t admire Oprah Winfrey and still wish Harvard hadn’t awarded her an hnrary dctr f law degree and the cmmencement speaker spt at yesterday’s graduatin. There’s n questin Oprah’s achievements place her in the temple f American success stries. Talent, charm, and an exceptinal wrk ethic have rarely hurled anyne as far as they have this frmer abused teenage mther frm rural Mississippi wh became ne f the wrld’s mst successful entertainment icns and the first African-American female billinaire.
Hnrary degrees are ften cnferred n nn-academic leaders in the arts, business, and plitics. Harvard’s list in recent years has included Kfi fi Annan, Bill Gates, Meryl Streep, and David Suter. But Oprah’s particular brand f celebrity is nt a gd fit fr the values f a university whse mtt, Veritas, means truth. Oprah’s passinate advcacy extends, unfrtunately, t a hearty embrace f fake science. Mst ntriusly, Oprah’s validatin f Jenny McCarthy’s claim that vaccines cause autism has n dubt cntributed t much harm thrugh the flish avidance f vaccines.
Famus peple are entitled t a few failings, like the rest f us. And the chice f cmmencement speakers ften reflects a balance f institutinal pririties and aspiratins. Judging frm ur cnversatins with many students, Oprah was a widely ppular chice.
But this vte f cnfidence in Oprah sends a trubling message at precisely the time when American universities need t d mre t advance the cause f reasn. As frmer Dean f Harvard Cllege, Harry Lewis, nted in a blg pst abut his bjectins. “It seems very dd fr Harvard t hnr such a high prfile ppularizer f the irratinal… at a time when plitical and religius nnsense s jepardize the rule f reasn in this allegedly enlightened demcracy and arund the wrld.”
As America’s ldest and mst visible university, Harvard has a special pprtunity t cnvey its respect fr science nt nly thrugh its research and teaching prgrams but als in its public affirmatin f evidence-based inquiry.
Unfrtunately, many American universities seem awfully busy prtecting their brand name and nt nearly busy enugh prtecting the pursuit f knwledge. A recent article in The Harvard Crimsn nted the shcking grwth f Harvard’s public relatins arm in the last five years and it questined whether a fcus n risk management and aviding cntrversy was really the best utward-lking face f this great institutin.
As American research universities begin t resemble prfit centers and entertainment cmplexes, it’s easy t lse sight f their primary missin: t prduce and spread knwledge. This missin depends n traditins f ratinal discurse and vigrus defense f the scientific methd. Oprah Winfrey’s hnrary dctrate was a step in the wrng directin.
27.What d we learn abut Oprah Winfrey frm the passage?
A.She was a distinguished graduate f Harvard Schl f Law.
B.She wrked her way t success in the entertainment industry.
C.She used t abuse her children when she was a yung mther.
D.She achieved her fame thrugh persistent advcacy f fake science.
28.Why des the authr think it inapprpriate fr Harvard t cnfer an hnrary degree n Oprah Winfrey?
A.She did nt specialize in the study f law.B.She was knwn as a supprter f fake science.
C.She was an icn f the entertainment industryD.She had nt distinguished herself academically.
29.What is the authr’s regret abut many American universities?
A.They shw inadequate respect fr evidence-based inquiry.
B.They fall shrt f expectatins in teaching and research.
C.They all attach t much imprtance t public relatins.
D.They are tlerant f plitical and religius nnsense.
30.What des the authr think a prestigius university like Harvard shuld fcus n?
    A.Cultivatin f student creativity.B.Defense f the scientific methd.
    C.Liberatin f the human mind.D.Pursuit f knwledge and truth.

I wanted t prve that I als culd d smething gd in public. Lking at me with a big smile n face, Mrs Sather said ''I believe in yu. If yu met sme prblem, yu can turn t me.''
