What does an outdoor cat do all day? A study of more than 900 house cats shows when they kill small birds and mammals, their influence is concentrated in a small area, having a bigger effect than wild predators (捕食性动物) do.
Roland Kays, a scientist at North Carolina State University and his colleagues collected GPS data from cats in six countries. “These cats are moving around their own backyard and a couple of their neighbors’ backyards, but most of them are not ranging very much further,” Kays said. “So initially I thought, ‘Oh, this is good news. They’re not going out into the nature preserves. ’ ”
Then Kays took how much wildlife cats kill in that small area into consideration. Some cats in the study were bringing home up to 11 dead birds a month, which doesn’t include what they ate or didn’t bring home.
“It actually ends up being a really high rate of predation,” Kays said. He calculates that cats can have 4to10 times the influence of a wild predator. Native predators, like jungle cats, also kill a lot of small animals, but their influence is spread out over a larger area. One study indicates that house cats kill billions of birds every year.
“The simplest thing to do is to keep your cat indoors,” Kays said.
For those who refuse to keep their cats inside, there are potential options. St. Lawrence University’s associate professor Susan Willson looked for one. She found a special brightly colored collar online.“The whole idea is that the bird will be able to visually see the cat creeping (爬行) up on it before the cat attacks it,” she said. Willson tested the collar on both her cat and dozens of others. It greatly reduced the number of birds the cats brought home.
“I’m not saying these collars can make a significant difference in the massive bird death that we’re seeing,” she said. “But what matters is that each individual bird that somebody finds in his backyard is not dead.”
24. Why does Kays say “this is good news” in Paragraph 2?
A.House cats can be tracked by GPS.
B.House cats are protected from wild predators.
C.House cats won’t kill birds in large numbers.
D.House cats feel comfortable in their own backyard.
25. How do wild predators differ from house cats in terms of killing animals?
A.They prefer to attack larger animals.
B.Their victims are distributed in a bigger range.
C.They kill 4-10 times the number of house cats.
D.They kill less than house cats on a monthly basis.
26. What can we infer from the passage?
A.The colored collar can be a sign of potential danger to birds.
B.Willson considers keeping her cat inside a good idea.
C.The only way to protect birds is to keep them indoors.
D.Birds can’t sense the danger when cats attack them.
27. Which word can best describe Willson’s attitude to using collars to save birds?
A.Concerned. B.Indifferent.
C.Doubtful. D.Positive.
C
North Americans value independence, and Europeans value togetherness. I never fully understood that stereotype(陈规,旧习) until two months ago, when I left Canada for a 4month period in a lab in France. On my first day, Pierre, a Ph. D. student, tapped me on my shoulder and asked, “Coffee?” I nodded and followed him to the common room, where other graduates were filling in. I sat there, cautiously sipping the bitter liquid and trying hard not to reveal my uncultured taste, while lab chatter filled the air.
Coffee breaks are a ceremonial part of lab culture here. The chatter sometimes turns to serious scientific topics. But mostly, the meetups offer a chance to wind down, to share stories about life inside and outside the lab and to sympathize with people who understand what you're going through.
The lighthearted atmosphere and sense of community is a welcome contrast to my life in Canada, where I spent most of my workdays in isolation. I went into the lab each morning with set goals for my day. At lunch, I'd keep my eyes glued to my computer while I fed forkfuls of salad into my mouth, trying to power through my todo list. For 9 months, I struggled to figure out why I couldn't exactly copy the results of another study. I didn't want to trouble my advisor too much. I was also hesitant to ask my labmates for help.
How much we were missing! Researchers need community because good ideas don't just come from reading literature and thinking deep thoughts. It's helpful to bounce ideas off others, and, to have a site to share the daytoday ups and downs of life.
Would coffee breaks have solved all my problems? Probably not. But I think sharing ideas with my peers would have helped solve my research dilemma. My time in France has taught me that it's important to create space for organic conversations about lab life. A scientist can feel isolated, but it's not necessarily so when you're connected to a supportive community.
28. How did the author feel when he drank coffee for the first time in France?
A.Very happy. B.A little nervous.
C.Somewhat excited. D.Quite curious.
29. What does the underlined phrase‘‘wind down” mean in Paragraph 2 ?
A.calm down . B.go down.
C.put down . D.break down.
30. What was the author's life like back in Canada?
A.Comfortable and fulfilled. B.Busy and lonely.
C.Tense but satisfactory. D.Boring but healthy.
31. Why does the author write this passage?
A. To introduce the coffee break in Europe.
B. To explain the difference between cultures.
C. To convey the importance of a supportive circle.
D. To recall his personal experience in France.

We often hear that 60 is the new 50. Just check out the images of your grandparents or greatgrandparents and notice their stooped (曲背的) bodies, their wrinkled faces when they were barely pushing 60. What a contrast with energetic, gymgoing sexagenarians (六十几岁的人) of today !
The research overseen by gerontologist(老年学专家) Taina Rantanen, compared adults born in 1910 and 1914 with those born roughly 30 years later. Both birth groups were examined in person at age 60 and again at 70 with the same set of six physical tests and five measures of cognition(认知).
According to the research, the laterborn group could walk faster, had a stronger hand grasp and could use more force with their lower legs. On cognitive tests, the laterborn group had better verbal fluency, and scored higher on a test matching numbers to symbols. But not everything changed across the generations: measures of lung function were surprisingly not changing, and there was no improvement in the shortterm memory task of recalling a series of figures.
There are many reasons why people are aging better, including improved medical care and a drop in smoking, but the key factor shown in the study of physical function was that the laterborn adults were more physically active and had bigger bodies, which suggested better nutrition. For brain function, the key seemed to be more years of education.
“Education is a powerful influence on aging and health,”says Luigi Ferrucci, scientific director of the U. S. National Institute on Aging. “With more education, you are probably going to have a larger income, which means you are more likely to go to the doctor, and have good nutrition.” He also points out that the average lifespan is seven years shorter in a poor state such as Mississippi than in a wealthier one such as California. “Here we still have lots of people who cannot take the drugs they need because they cannot pay for them,” he says. In short, 60 may be the new 50 for many of us but not for all.
32. How does the writer begin the passage?
A.By imagining a scene. B.By presenting an image
C.By raising a question. D. By making a comparison.
33. Which of the following is true about the research?
A.The laterborn group could hardly grasp things tightly.
B. Everything didn't change across the generations.
C.The laterborn group did worse in matching numbers to symbols.
D.There was a little improvement in shortterm memory in both groups.
34. According to the research, what contributes most to better physical aging?
A.Better nutrition. B.Education.
C.Improved medical care. D.Energetic images.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Many reasons contribute to people's better physical function.
B.Today's energetic sexagenarians have much better images.
C.Education is the key to people's better aging.
D.People today are aging better than people born earlier.

Dear Paul,
I really can't thank you very much for your invitation.
I do want to accept them and take this opportunity to introduce traditional Chinese paintings to foreign friends, but I'm sorry to inform you that I can't. The reason is because I am busy preparing myself for the coming College Entrance Examination. As for the introduction speech, I strongly recommend my friend Anna, that is the most suitable choice to take my place on next Sunday. She begun to learn paintings at an early age and has good knowledge of traditional Chinese paintings. However, her active personality and perfect speaking English will help make your activity a success.
Sorry again for any inconvenient caused by my absence and all the best wishes to you.
Yours,
Li Hua

Nowadays more and more people choose to read on their mobile phone or computers. E-reading has become a popular way of reading , especially among young people. Opinions vary from person to person about it .
Some people hold the belief that e-reading is much more convenient than traditional reading , for they can read at any time or place if they like. Besides, a wide variety of information can be obtained on the Internet. More importantly, it is a good way to save paper, thus protecting our forest resources. In spite of the advantages of e-reading , there are also some disadvantages . To begin with , e-reading doesn’t help to develop good reading habits, because there is so much information that it is hard to do some deep reading .Besides, it’s obvious that the radiation of electronic devices will do great harm to our health. What’s worse, if we stare at the screens for a long time, our eyesight will be damaged inevitably.
From my point of view, everything has its advantages and disadvantages .Whether these advantages outweight disadvantages depends on what you want to achieve.
