Le Baekeland never gave up his dream f creating a special kind f plastic that wuld keep its frm after it cled. His inventin was Bakelite, the inexpensive, widely used plastic.
Le was brn in Belgium int a lwer, middle-class family. He studied at Ghent University in 1882 and eventually graduated with a dctrate in natural science at the age f 21.He taught there fr several years befre he travelled n a schlarship t the United States. Once in New Yrk, Le met Richard Anthny. Anthny saw ptential in yung Le and ffered him a jb f wrking in America as a chemist fr his cmpany. Le wrked fr Anthny fr the next tw years befre unsuccessfully attempting t start his wn cnsulting business.
After failing t see success in his wn business peratins, Le decided t return t what he knew and he started prducing a kind f phtgraphic paper that wuld allw gd pictures t be taken in artificial light. He did s well in the beginning that he started a cmpany called Nepera Chemical Cmpany while creating a special kind f paper called Velx. Within tw years, Kdak Cmpany bught the right t Le's discvery fr $1,000,000. Le accepted and used the mney t set up his wn labratry in his backyard in New Yrk and lived a cmfrtable life.
Le's next prject was t cme up with the hard yet mldable(可塑造的)plastic. After much experimentatin and scientific analysis, Le finally came up with the plastic called Bakelite. Its special characteristic was that at a high temperature and pressure, Bakelite can hld its frm, even under great heat.
