They were a happy family:four daughters were all in the same school in different grades. The youngest, Janice, who was in my class, seemed to be glued(粘) to her mother’s skirts. The three older girls took the bus to school every morning, but Janice was always driven to school by her mother.
One Friday, Janice’s mother asked for a talk with me. She said in a soft voice, “My husband is going to Europe on business for two weeks, and he insists that I go with him. I have tried to explain over and over that Janice needs me here. But he thinks that she will be fine without me so I have no choice; I have to go. I have told the babysitter to drive her every morning. Will you please give Janice special attention and help her? I want to be sure everything goes well for her.”
I told her that we would make every effort to support Janice. I even volunteered to meet Janice at her car so she would see a familiar face. As a mother myself, I’d like to help. Janice’s mother thanked me for my understanding.
On Monday morning, expecting a tearful, anxious child, I planned a special program of fun and games. I waited outside to greet Janice, but just then the bus arrived and not three, but four girls got off. Janice skipped along joyfully, saying “goodbye” to her sisters as she ran with two friends into the classroom. I walked slowly into the classroom and called Janice over to ask how the bus ride went. Impatiently she said, “Oh, I always want to take the bus with the other kids, but Mother needs to be with me. You see there won’t be any more babies, so I have to be a baby a little longer. While she is away, I’ll just ride the bus every day. I am five, you know.”
21. Why did Janice’s mother want to have a talk with the author?
A. To ask her to help Janice with her homework. B. To ask her to pick up Janice every day.
C. To ask her to meet Janice at her car. D. To ask her to give Janice more attention.
22. What did the author not do for Janice?
A. Plan a special program of fun and games. B. Wait for her outside the school.
C. Greet her when she got off the car. D. Ask about her bus ride.
23. What do we know from the passage?
A. Janice is too young to go to school by bus. B. Janice likes taking a bus to school.
C. Janice doesn’t like her babysitter. D. Janice is no longer a child.

A young Dutch inventor is widening his effort to clean up floating(浮动的) plastic from the Pacific Ocean. He has developed a floating device(设备) to trap plastic waste moving into rivers before it reaches the oceans.
Boyan Slat was just 18 years old when he invented a system for catching waste in the ocean. He also founded an environmental group called “The Ocean Cleanup”. Its purpose is to develop the system. Last year, Slat showed the next step: a floating device(装置) called Interceptor. It removes plastic out of rivers. The device is powered by energy from the sun. “The 1,000 rivers are responsible for about 80% of plastic going into the world’s oceans,” said Slat. Three of the machines have already been used. Each machine costs about $ 775,660, but the cost might drop as production increases.
Since they were used, the machines have been doing very well, collecting the plastic bottles and all the rubbish in the rivers. According to Slat, it is necessary to close “the tap”, which means preventing more plastic from reaching the ocean in the first place. He wanted to clean them all in the next five years. “This is not going to be easy, but if we do get this done, we could truly make our oceans clean again,” said Slat.
The device is designed to be safe in rivers. Its nose is shaped to change directions to keep it away from larger floating things. It works by guiding plastic waste into an opening in the front of the device. The waste is then carried inside the machine where it is dropped into containers. The device sends a text message to local operators that can come and empty it when it is full.
24. What do we know about Interceptor?
A. It needs solar power to work. B. It can help put waste into groups.
C. It is being under test. D. It is mainly used in the oceans.
25. What does “the tap” refer to in paragraph 3?
A. The machines. B. The rivers. C. The oceans. ` D. The waste.
26. What’s the function of the device’s nose?
A. To empty the waste. B. To serve as containers.
C. To send operators text messages. D. To ensure the device’s safety.
27. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A magazine. D. A novel.

It’s important for children to take part in social activities during their summer holidays. “Kids should have a break during the summer. They’ve worked hard during the school year and this is their time to relax, but they should continue communicating with their friends and meeting new people,” said Dr. Jin Han. He’s a professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Spending time with friends and meeting new people by doing fun and educational activities such as music, arts and sports programs in summer help with their development. “If children spend a lot of time alone on their electronic equipment(电子设备), then they will fail to communicate with others,” Han said. “In today’s world, it’s very easy for kids to stay indoors all day and keep in touch with others, but that is not a good way to connect with others. Face-to-face communication is necessary and important. Parents should restrict the time that their children spend on electronic equipment. For example, the time they spend on their phones cannot be more than one hour a day.”
It’s also important for children to spend quality time with their parents and sisters or brothers. “It’s not the length of time, but the quality of time that families spend together that is really valuable,” Han said. “This type of communication is not something that you can get from anywhere else. It doesn’t matter how old the child is, because family bonding (亲密关系) experiences can happen at any time.”
Having children spend time with friends and families doesn’t have to spend money in the wallet, either. For example, going to the neighborhood swimming pool or having a picnic is a great way to spend quality time together.
- What does Dr. Jin Han think about the summer holidays according to the first paragraph?
A. It is necessary for children to have a rest during summer holidays.
B. Children should relax as much as possible during summer holidays.
C. Making new friends in summer holidays is difficult for children.
D. Children should prepare for schoolwork in summer holidays.
29. What does the underlined word “restrict” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Increase. B. Spend. C. Employ. D. Control.
30. What can we infer from children spending time with families?
A. How long children spend with families matters.
B. What to do with families depends on the parents.
C. How to enjoy the time with families is of great importance.
D. When to spend time with families makes a difference.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The importance of friends and families.
B. The suitable ways to spend summer holidays.
C. The introduction of some social activities.
D. The necessity of face-to-face communication.
D
Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated (居住) by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit (联系) groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling (定居,安定) down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialisation (工业化), the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation (全球化) and better communications in the past few decades (十年), all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution (分布) of these languages is hugely uneven (不均衡). The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 languages; the Americas about 1,000; Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number (中位数) of speakers is an only 6,000, which means that half of the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction (消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico (150), Lipan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.
32. What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times?
A. They developed very fast. B. They were large in number.
C. They had similar patterns. D. They were closely connected
33. Which of the following best explains "dominant" underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Complex. B. Advanced. C. Modern. D. Powerful.
34. How many languages are spoken by less than 6, 000 people at present?
A. About 6,800. B. About 3,400. C. About 2,400. D. About 1,200.
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. New languages will be created.
B. Peoples lifestyles are reflected (反映) in languages.
C. Geography decides language development.
D. Human development results in fewer languages.
