Facial recognition (面部识别) cameras are everywhere, including in your smartphone. Many people rely on this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or make quick payments, but there is a problem: Everyone is wearing masks. What a hassle!
Now, tech companies have updated their software. Facial recognition technology can now identify people even if they are wearing a mask.
Beijing-based tech company Hanwang has announced a software which can correctly recognize 95 percent of people wearing masks, Engineering & Technology ( E&T ) reported. What’s the secret? It’s all about your eyes. Marios Savvides, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition technology. As we get older, he said, our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes. It stays the same — even if we put on weight. Another company, Geneva-based Tech5, has also been working on this kind of software. Another Japan based NEC Corp claims an surprising 99.9 percent accuracy rate when identifying people with masks.
Facial recognition software is about more than just unlocking your phone. It’s about public safety. For example, you don’t need to present an ID card, which can be lost or stolen. It also means that virus aren’t spread by touching things, said NEC’s Shinya Takeshima. “Touchless verification (验证) has become extremely important due to the coronavirus,” he said to Reuters. “We hope to contribute to safety and peace of mind.” More than that, facial recognition can be used to fight crime. “It can detect crime suspects (嫌疑犯) or terrorists,” said Huang Lei, Hanwang’s vice president. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force and other governments.
Huang admits one big weakness of this technology: It fails when people wear both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost,” Huang said to E&T.
    24. What does the underlined word “hassle” in paragraph 1 probably mean ?
    A. A habit. B. A mistake. C. A rule. D. A trouble.
    25. The facial recognition software mainly depends on ______ to identify people with masks.
    A. The forehead. B. The shape of faces.
    C. The eye region. D. The facial expressions.
    26. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
    A. The future of facial recognition technology.
    B. The advantages of facial recognition technology.
    C. Different types of facial recognition software.
    D. The problems with current facial recognition technology.
    27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. The new technology cannot keep key facial information.
    B. It is necessary to make improvements in the new technology.
    C. Huang has a negative attitude toward the new technology.
    D. The new technology doesn’t work when people wear sunglasses.

    C
On Sept 25, a team of doctors made medical history. In a two-hour procedure, led by Dr Robert Montgomery at New York University (NYU) Langone Health in the US, doctors successfully attached a kidney (肾) from a genetically-engineered (转基因的) pig to a human. The kidney functioned normally and wasn’t rejected (排斥) by the person’s immune system.
Montgomery said that the success was great. “It was a kidney that was immediately functioning,” Montgomery told CBS News.
The recipient (接受者) was a brain-dead patient with signs of kidney dysfunction (功能障碍) whose family agreed to the experiment before she was due to be taken off life support, researchers told Reuters.
For three days, the kidney was attached to the patient’s blood vessels (血管) by the upper leg and kept outside her body.
This kidney was never meant to serve as a permanently functioning organ for the patient. Instead, the point of the operation was to test whether the body would reject the organ. Researchers have been working toward the possibility of using animal organs, for example pigs’, for transplants for years. The problem lies in how to prevent the body from rejecting the organ.
This is where the idea of using an organ from a genetically-engineered pig came into play.
According to Popular Science, pig cells contain a sugar molecule (分子) that is foreign to the human body and causes organ rejection. Montgomery’s team thought that using a genetically-engineered pig that wouldn’t produce this sugar molecule would overcome the problem of organ rejection. This could give hope to many common people.
Montgomery said that the NYU kidney transplant (移植) experiment would bring hope for patients with kidney failure, possibly in the next year or two, CNN reported.
While there is still much to be done before entire pig organs are regularly used in people, the future itself is encouraging. Amy Friedman told The New York Times that she hopes that in the future, it will be possible to use other organs grown in pigs as well. “ It’s truly unbelievable to think of how many transplants we might be able to offer.”
    28. What was the aim of the experiment?
    A. To find out what causes kidney dysfunction.
    B. To test if the animal organ would be rejected.
    C. To study what causes the human body to reject an organ.
    D. To see what kinds of animal organs could work in humans.
    29. How did the researchers overcome the challenge ?
    A. By enlarging the sugar molecule.
    B. By adjusting the position of the kidney.
    C. By using a genetically-engineered pig.
    D. By adding a sugar molecule to the organ.
    30. What’s the meaning of the experiment?
    A. It developed a permanently functioning organ.
    B. It provides a perfect solution to kidney failure.
    C. It is the first time a brain-dead patient has been cured.
    D. It marks a step toward using pig kidneys for transplants.
    31. What’s Friedman’s attitude toward the prospect of using entire pig organs for transplants?
    A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Positive. D. Uncertain.

    D
“What is the story of your piano?” a new friend asked over dinner. My piano sits in the corner of my small living room.
My piano has a story? “All pianos have stories” she said. Suddenly, my piano’s story came flooding out of me fully-formed as if I’d always had this tale to tell.
I loved music since childhood. I started with the recorder and moved on to instrument like the violin, trumpet (小号) and guitar. But playing the piano had always been my dream, a dream our family could not afford.
I grew up in an immigrant Chinese family in Toronto. My father waited tables in a Chinese restaurant, and my mother worked in a Chinese laundry. Despite our poor childhood, my siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I were always fed with love. I can’t remember which birthday it was when she spared the money to buy me a doll. Of course, by then I’d grown out of the age of wanting dolls, but she worked too hard to know that, and I never told her. I happily and gratefully accepted the doll because I loved the gift that was her loving me enough to buy it for me.
So it was eventually with my piano. It was in my last year of high school. I took piano lessons for about a year before university forced me to stop. I had to make a decision: to work towards the more practical goal of medical school or my love for music. Finally I chose to stop piano lessons.
I moved that piano around with me over the next decade — until my son was born. He showed an early interest in music, so I put him in piano lessons. I played that piano through my son — although guitar was finally his instrument of choice .
I’ve come to realize that for my career, I’ve let all personal pleasures fall away. I figured I’d get back to playing the piano when I retire. Maybe it’s time to get that piano retuned (重新调音) again, this time for myself, before it’s too late to enjoy. Maybe that’s something we all should do right now .
Sometimes a single question can open whole paths of thinking and discovery. So, what is the story of your piano?
    32. What do we know about the author from the first four paragraphs?
    A. She was born in a musical family.
    B. She had a poor but happy childhood.
    C. Her interest in dolls never faded.
    D. Her parents were too busy to care for her.

    A. Her parents persuaded her to do so.
    B. She faced study and career pressure.
    C. She couldn’t afford piano lessons.
    D. Her university didn’t provide such lessons.
    34. What will the author probably do in the near future?
    A. Restart her piano dream.
    B. Ask her son to learn piano.
    C. Buy a new piano for herself.
    D. Focus on her medical career.
    35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the article?
    A. To explain the influence of music on her.
    B. To encourage readers to play an instrument.
    C. To look back on her childhood experience.
    D. To share her story about an unrealized dream.

    A possible version
    Dear Amy,
I am sorry that you are having a problem with your friend and quite understand how you feel. Here is my advice to help you save your friendship.
Above all, having been friends with her for so many years, you should trust her. Maybe something happened to her or her family. She probably doesn’t want you to get involved. So it may be a good idea to give her some time to be alone. Besides, if you are really concerned, you can ask another friend to help find out the reason, which is the key to solving the problem.
I sincerely hope my suggestions can be of some help to you and that you and Jane are on good terms as before.
    Yours truly,
    Li Hua
