Why is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys?
The answer depends largely on cultural values as well as personal experiences. To the Egyptians, green is a color that represents the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims, it means heaven. Red is a symbol of happiness and good luck in many cultures. In China, children are given money in a red envelope to bring good luck in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs(宗教信仰). Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect themselves against something bad.
People’s choice of colors is also influenced by their bodies’ reactions(反应) toward them. Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally and physically(身心). People who work in green environment have been found to have fewer stomachs.
Red can cause a person’s blood pressure to rise and increase people’s appetites(食欲). Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. Similarly, many commercial(商业的) websites will have a red “Buy Now” button because red is a color that easily catches a person’s eye and encourages them to buy things.
Blue is another calm color. Unlike red, blue can cause people to lose appetite. So if you want to eat less, some people suggest that eating from blue plates can help.
The next time you are deciding on what to wear or what color to decorate your room, think about the color carefully.

Is there anybody you dislike? Well, maybe you don’t really dislike them. But you get really angry every time you think of them. If you don’t let this anger go, it can turn into bitterness (痛苦).
Bitterness appears when we can’t forgive (原谅) someone who has hurt us or made us angry. Someone might say or do something that hurts us. But instead of controlling the anger, we keep it deep inside. Before long, a bitter feeling begins to grow. We may think we’re hurting that person by criticizing(指责) him or her often, but we’re really only hurting ourselves.
Bitterness can not only lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, but also hurt our relationships with friends and relatives. No one enjoys being around an angry person for very long.
If you see bitterness in your life, here are some ways to deal with it.
Accept it
Instead of trying to deny your anger, make it clear to yourself and accept it. See your anger for what it is and quickly deal with it.
Stop making excuses for it
You may feel you have a right to be angry. You may think you’re right and the other person is wrong. You may even secretly enjoy making the other person look bad. But in the end, bitterness hurts you much more than the other person. The bitterness will hold you back, and the other person will go on with his or her life.
Forgive and forget it
You probably can’t completely put the anger out of your mind. But you can decide to forgive the others. Forget it and move on. You’ll enjoy better health and peace of mind.
55. According to the passage, bitterness comes from .
A. our health problems like heart disease

58. What can we learn from the passage?
A. We should enjoy someone who hurts us.
B. We should pay more attention to our friends.
C. It’s better to let bitterness go along with the other person.
D. The peace of mind is more important than the hurt itself.

Most of us had no idea what to expect last Monday. Our teachers told us that it was School Poetry Week. The whole school would see a show called Poetry Play.
When we got to the hall, we saw a big box in the middle of the stage. A man was sitting on it. After everyone sat down, the man stood up. He started pulling up the sail on a ship. There was no ship. There was no rope. He didn’t say anything. But we could understand exactly what he was doing. We all got very quiet and watched. Soon he was sailing on the sea. He began speaking, “If I had a ship, I’d sail my ship.” He was reciting The Island, a poem by A. A. Milne.
By then we knew that Peter Williams, the man on the stage, was going to give us a great performance. Between poems, he often lifted the lid(盖子) of the box and put his head inside. When he came out, he had changed into a different character by putting on a funny nose or a hat. First he was a silly guy with big red cheeks and a round nose. Then he turned into a very proper English gentleman. Next he was a cat. With each change he used a different voice. Williams was truly amazing. He became five different characters and recited more than twenty poems in all.
His performance of Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll was one of the best parts of the show. The poem is filled with made-up words. No one knows exactly what they mean. But when Peter Williams acted out the poem, it became an exciting experience.
Williams was often very funny. But he was serious, too. He really showed how poems can fit every mood. He told us that we should say poems out loud. We should all try to learn some poems by heart. He left us with these words from a poem by Beatrice Schenk de Regniers, “Keep a poem in your pocket.”
If you visit our school today, you’ll see that Peter Williams’ words come to life. In every room you will hear people reading poems out loud. Ask anyone what his or her favourite poem is. Your friend will probably start reciting(背诵) it!
Poetry Play got School Poetry Week off to a wonderful start.
59. Why did Peter Williams put his head inside the box between poems?

60. Which of the following sentences tells “an opinion” not “a fact”?

Last year, I took a trip to Dunhuang with some friends.
After we left our hotel, we stepped out into a sandstorm that morning. Luckily, many of our group were well-prepared with face masks and caps. I, on the other hand, was not as equipped(配备). I should have learned about the conditions there better.
This was the low-point of the trip, but reparation(补偿) was made that evening with a trip to an amazing cultural show called “Silk Road”. This was a more interesting take on the Silk Road’s history, using dance and song to show the vivid(生动的) cultural traditions and artistic legacies(遗产) of Dunhuang and the Silk Road. It was a fully entertaining(有趣的) evening.
The next day’s visit to the Mogao Caves was certainly the highlight of the trip. From the outside, they look perfectly common. But upon entering the dry, cool caves, it’s as though you’ve been taken to another world: it’s a great place of ancient artwork with 45, 000 square meters of murals(壁画) and statues, making it the world’s largest collection of Buddhist(佛教的) art. Many of the pink-coloured paints have turned black. Our guide said, “The painters spent much of their lives painting in the near-dark, guided only by rays of natural light and dull oil lamps, and as such, most went blind.”
Out of the darkness of the caves, we stepped into the blinding light of the Gobi, with a view of the Yueyaquan, nestled in the desert bowl, for an afternoon of sand-boarding and camel rides—Silk Road style.

You may think that English dictionaries have been used for many, many centuries. The spelling of English has always been a problem, but it was more of a problem in the days before a dictionary. In those days people spelt words in different ways which you might find interesting. But it made reading English much more difficult. So dictionaries were invented to encourage everybody to spell the same. In fact, an English dictionary like the kind you use today wasn’t made until the time of the Qing Dynasty. Three men did most of the important early work on dictionaries: Samuel Johnson, Noah Webster and James Murray. These men spent nearly all of their lives trying to collect words for their dictionaries.
The largest dictionary in the world is the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED for short. The idea for this dictionary came from an important meeting in Britain in 1857. Twenty-two years later, Oxford University asked James Murray to be the editor of its new dictionary.
Murray had never been to college. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and learned by himself while working in a bank. Later he became a great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a place built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one meter underground. In winter he had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five o’clock and worked several hours before breakfast. Often he would work by candle light into the evening.
Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Then others went to work with Murray, and his two daughters were among them. He worked on the dictionary until he was very old. Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished it. It included more than 15,000 words in twelve books. And you thought your English dictionary was big!

根据短文内容,回答问题,并将答案写在答题卡上标有题号的横线上。
Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not true. Communication is a problem for both parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here are some tips for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorbike. They argued over it. But they finally came to a promise. Michael bought the motorbike, but only drove it on certain days. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect to them. Showing respect can keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!

Last Friday three tigers ran out of a zoo, because the keeper was careless in his work. Two of the tigers ran to the hills around the zoo, and the workers of the zoo caught them soon.
The third tiger ran into a town. The tiger jumped in when it saw an open window on the first floor of a house. Inside, it found an old woman. The old woman can’t see clearly. There’s something wrong with her eyes. She thought the animal was a large dog and she put her hand on its head. The large animal didn’t mind her and went into the bedroom. It fell asleep on some old clothes.
The workers of the zoo found the tiger there, so they put the tiger in a cage and carried it back to the zoo.

When you learn a foreign language, vocabulary is very important. The more words you know, the better you will master the language. There are two advantages of building up your vocabulary. One is that you can communicate with others better. The other is that it’s useful to your study. It helps you learn more quickly.
If you want to enlarge your vocabulary, here are some suggestions on how to remember new words. First you should remember the words by understanding them. Second, you can learn words through reading. Try to read more books. Third, it’s a good habit to make notes of the new words you meet while reading.
听第三篇短文,回答第21-25小题。
Mrs. Brown has a lovely cat. She loves her pet very much. Every day at lunchtime, the cat sits at the table with her. Mrs. Brown eats with a knife and a fork, but the cat eats from its plate. Sometimes, when the cat finishes its dish, its master will give it a bit of her food. The woman shares her meal with the cat.
One day, the cat disappeared at lunchtime. After a while, before lunch was over, the cat rushed into the chair quickly. It had two mice in its mouth, and before anyone could stop it, it dropped one into its own plate, and the other into its master’s plate. “Oh, dear!” cried Mr. Brown. “A mouse is in your plate!” “How lovely!” Mrs. Brown smiled. “This shows that it’s a nice cat. It knows what friendship is. It wishes me to share its meal as I often share mine with it.”

Dear Sir/ Madam,
I am writing to recommend my mother to get “the Best Doctor Award”. I think she has many beautiful qualities for this award.
My mother is the person who has influenced me most. She is in her forties. As a doctor, mother often says that she can’t be too careful or afford to make any mistakes.
(She is a good doctor with many strong qualities.) She has a heart full of love. She is patient and organized. She always keeps things in good order. She spends most of her time on the work. She devoted herself to fighting against COVID-19.
I expect she can spare some time for me and give me some suggestions on how to achieve a balance between my schoolwork and hobbies.
I’m proud of her. I also hope she will pay more attention to her own health , and find more time to relax herself. I hope I can be a person like her in the future.
I think my mother is the most suitable person for “the Best Doctor Award”. I hope that you agree with me.
Yours sincerely,
Wu Hao
