It's been an excellent jurney especially since I used t have truble saying half the alphabet.
My twin sister Sarah and I were brn very prematurely, which led t lts f ear infectins. I didn't have as much luck as Sarah and the ear infectins left me with a severe hearing prblem, making it difficult t understand speech, which caused me t develp a speech impediment. My sister wuld have t translate when I spke because peple had n idea what I was saying. Writing wasn't just fun: it was a way t have my vice heard and t stp me frm feeling pity fr my disability. And I was determined t read my petry in frnt f audiences.
Our single mm culdn't always affrd medical help. Smetimes she had t chse: Shall I put fd n the table r make sure Amanda can say this wrd? When we culdn't pay, I'd spend abut an hur a day recrding my talking and crrecting the mistakes gain and again. But petry was a cnstant. "This is a cllabrative (合作的) effrt that anyne culd get invlved in," says Chris Lincln, an Oxfrd University astrphysicist (天体物理学家) and cfunder f Zniverse, a platfrm that hsts dzens f citizen science prjects. Citizen scientists can cntribute t breakthrughs in almst any field, frm eclgy t astrphysics.
"As lng as pattern recgnitin is invlved, there are n limits t what can becme a citizen science prject," Dr. Lintn says. "Anyne can identify patterns in images, graphs, r even seemingly bring data after a shrt tutrial. Machine learning allws cmputers t d sme pattern recgnitin. But humans, particularly amateur scientists, dn't stay fcused n what they're suppsed t. And that's gd, because peple wh d that ntice the unusual things in s data set.
"And citizen science desn't have t be directed by a scientist," says Sheila Jasanff, directr f the Prgram n Science, Technlgy and Sciety at Harvard University. "Citizens prducing knwledge in places where fficial rgans have failed then can als be citizen scientists," she says. That's what happened in Flint, Michigan, when a lcal mther started drinking water tests that caused a brader investigatin f lead levels.

Several seedless fruits, frm bananas t grapes, are already available, but have mstly cme abut by luck rather than design. And althugh there are a few seedless varieties f tmates, they've taken researchers many years t create.
Nw it can be dne very quickly, as Keishi Osakabe at Tkushima University in Japan has shwn. His team used the CRISPR gene editing technlgy t make fruits develp even thugh n seeds had begun t frm. "We haven't tasted them yet, but in thery they shuld taste the same," says Osakabe.
There have been a few effrts t create seedless tmates using earlier genetic-engineering techniques. These methds take lnger time cmpared with CRISPR.
Sme "seedless" fruits just have very small seeds, and still require pllinatin (授粉). But cmpletely seedless fruits like the edited tmat d nt require pllinatin at all. Such plants culd imprve fd security by reducing ur reliance n smaller bee ppulatins, says Saul Cunningham at the Australian Natinal University. Many fruit grwers buy bees t pllinate their crps.
There is adeficiencyfr farmers, hwever. Seedless plants usually have t be grwn frm cuttings, which invlves mre labr than planting seeds.
CRISPR culd be used t develp ther types f fruit that dn't require pllinatr, as well as intrduce beneficial mutatins (突变), says Osakabe.
But t make it n t the supermarket, gene-edited plants may have t meet the same standards as genetically engineered plants, which wuld greatly increase csts. Sme argue chat since gene editing is used t intrduce mutatins already fund in sme f the plants we eat, it shuld nt require such strict regulatins.
