Most human beings are kind, good-natured beings who will help someone out in need if they are able to, especially if that someone is a little kid. Travis Sattler is one of those human beings.
The 18-year-old didn’t think twice about helping a little boy who walked up to the counter at Freddy’s Frozen Custard where he’d been working for a year. The little boy named Johnny Smith had just finished eating with his mother when he walked up to the counter where Travis was working as the cashier (收银员). He ordered an ice cream. “Once I told him the total, he was counting his change and all of his money, and then he handed everything to me. But he didn’t have enough money to pay for it. He was maybe $2 short,” Travis said.
But Travis wasn’t about to let this boy walk out of the restaurant without his ice cream. So, he pulled out his credit card and told the boy to take the ice cream away. “He had a big smile and the widest eyes when he ran back to his mom and told her what had happened,” Travis said.
About 30 minutes later, the little boy walked up to Travis and handed him a note before walking out of the restaurant with his mom. It said, “Thank you for being so nice and paying for my ice cream. We need more people like you.” The note also had a $100 bill folded in it.
“I think I brightened up their day,” Travis said. And Travis’s boss couldn’t be more proud of him. He gave him an extra $100 bill as well and sent him some goodies.

A tiny village in Alaska has experienced an increase in tourism in recent years as polar bears spend more time on land than on Arctic sea ice.
More than 2,000 people visited the village of Kaktovik last year to see polar bears in the wild. The far north community is located in an area where rapid global warming has sped up the movement of sea ice, the primary habitat of polar bears. As ice has gradually moved to deep water beyond continental shelf, more bears are forced to remain on land to look for food.
The village had fewer than 50 visitors annually before 2011, said Jennifer Reed, a worker of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. “Today we’re talking about thousands of visitors, many from around the world each year,” Reed said.
Polar bears have always been a common sight on sea ice near Kaktovik, but residents started noticing a change in the mid-1990s. Because of the difficult situation, more bears started to stay on land, and researchers began taking note of more female bears making dens (兽穴) in the snow on land instead of on the ice to raise their babies.
“U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists began hearing reports of the increasing numbers of polar bears in the area in the early 2000s,” Reed said. As more attention was given to the plight of polar bears, more tourists started heading to Kaktovik.
Most tourists visit in the fall, when bears are forced toward land because sea ice is the farthest away from the shore. Bruce Inglangasak, a local hunter who offers wildlife-viewing tours, said he has been offering polar bear tours since 2003 or 2004. Most of his clients are from Europe and the USA. “Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels,” Bruce said.
28. Why do more polar bears stay on land?
A. To search for food. B. To keep away from pollution.
C. To observe climate change. D. To protect continental shelf.
29. Where do polar bears prefer to live?
A. On land. B. In snow. C. On sea ice. D. Under water.
30. Which can replace the underlined word “plight” in paragraph 5?
A. Difference. B. Difficulty. C. Extinction. D. Experiment.
31. What can we know about polar bears from the text?
A. They like staying with people.
B. They lack people’s attention.
C. Their habitat is decreasing.
D. Their choice of food is changing.
D
The use of AI (artificial intelligence) is becoming more common in many branches of industry and online shopping. Traditional lines of work, such as goods transport and driving, are developing in a similar direction although mainly out of public view. Scientists at the University or Gottingen have now investigated how efficient (高效的) the use of AI can be in the commercial management of trucks.
“Digital applications—as well as machine learning, a kind of AI—are increasingly applied to operations and courses in the transport area,” explains Professor Matthias Klumpp from the Faculty of Economics. “The question in the commercial area, however, is whether or not this contributes to achieving goals.”
To answer this question, the researchers compared the work efficiency of truck drivers with their main use of AI applications. Looking at trade delivery by truck, they studied three groups: the first drove completely following human decision-making models; the second used a combination of human and machine; and the third depended completely on fully automated decisions.
The researchers found that an intelligent combination of human work and decision-making abilities with AI applications promises the highest transport and driving efficiency. “On average, the second group achieved the most efficient transport trips, with the fewest interventions (干预) and off-course from the best path.” one researcher said, “Clearly, neither a completely human decision-making structure nor a fully automated driving system can promise to meet current goods transport requirements.” The scientists therefore summarized that despite the progress of AI in the field of transportation by truck, human experience and decision-making abilities will still be necessary in the longer term. However, the challenge is that a wide range of training and qualification (资格) needs will come along by working with AI applications, especially for simple goods transport activities.
32. What does Matthias Klumpp focus on?
A. The efficiency of AI. B. The advantages of AI.
C. The problems caused by AI. D. The wide applications of AI.
33. How did the researchers get the finding?
A. By providing examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By using different trucks. D. By listing three experiments.
34. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. AI is better at making decisions.
B. A balance is needed between human and AI.
C. Human will soon be replaced by AI in driving.
D. AI applications meet the current requirements.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The future of transport.
B. Artificial intelligence as a co-driver.
C. Artificial intelligence—a better choice in driving.
D. The strengths of artificial intelligence in transport.

“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colorful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”, and of course a cake with 12 candles. It was a wonderful feeling. I knew that I had finally turned twelve and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, “Thank you! I love you guys!”
“You’re welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we didn’t only get you this because you turned twelve, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades.” “Of course I will.” I said confidently.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing of my phone and asking everyone for their numbers. It was cool that I got so many contacts on the first day.
It felt like I didn’t even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn’t pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. However, I didn’t get caught using it. I am pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her.
A week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign the test. It was hard to show my mom the test. She was used to seeing A’s and B’s on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn’t believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed.

The person I admire most
Teenagers are crazy about idols and are attracted by the beautiful faces, the dance and singing skills. But for me, the person I admire most is Yuan Longping, the “father of hybrid rice”.
As one of China’s most famous scientists, Yuan devoted himself to studying agriculture. His hybrid strains have helped feed not just China, but many other countries that depend on rice as well. He received numerous awards, but he cared little for celebrity or money. Instead, he made large contributions to support agricultural research.

Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone. They talked with me about my unusual behavior after I got my mobile phone as a birthday gift. They said they had noticed that I never paid attention to them. It was like I had my own little world. So they thought we didn’t communicate as much with my phone. They doubted that my attention in class was also attracted by the mobile phone. They regretted having given me a phone, which made me ignore the family and study.
Then I started to wonder if I was wrong. A week later I tried going a whole day without a phone and it didn’t go that baldly. I had so much fun because I was actually spending time with my family and paying attention to them. From that day, I had a different opinion towards phones. Phones really take you away from the rest of the world. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t use a phone, but we shouldn’t get stuck with your phone all day.

W: I can’t stand waiting in line! There are so many other things we have to do, and we have so little time to do them.
M: Well, we can’t just leave. There’s nothing we can do now. We just have to relax and deal with it.
Text 6
W: Do you shop online? It’s so simple. I can get whatever I want with a click of a button!
M: I shop online a lot. I prefer it because I really don’t like going to crowded stores. It feels less stressful to shop from my computer. Also, I can find things online that sometimes aren’t in stores.
W: That’s true! But I don’t like it when I receive something I ordered, and it doesn’t look like it did on the computer.
M: Well, most companies have a return policy, so you can send it right back and have your money returned. It’s easy.
Text 7
W: What do you need me to help you with, Bob?
M: Our teacher asked us to do a practice job interview.
W: OK. What type of job? Do you want to work in a school, like our dad?
M: No. I want to work at the store and get some sales experience first.
W: OK. First question: Why should I hire you?
M: Well, I am friendly and I am good at math.
W: You might want to give longer answers. Try saying: I am friendly, work well with others, and I know how to handle money. What about your weaknesses?
M: I don’t have any.
W: You can’t say that. Nobody is perfect.
Text 8
M: Thank you for calling McDonald’s. How can I help you?
W: Hi, can I have the Barbecue Chicken Burger Meal?
M: I’m sorry, madam. We don’t have that anymore. Would you like to try something else, instead?
W: OK, then I’ll have the Double Cheeseburger Meal, with medium French fries and a Coke.
M: Sure. Would you like to supersize your meal?
W: What does that mean?
M: For an extra dollar, you get large French fries and a large Coke, instead.
W: Sure. And I want one ice cream, too. When will the food arrive?
M: Usually half an hour to 45 minutes, but because of the rain, it will be closer to an hour. (Do you still want the ice cream? It will probably melt.
W: You’re right. OK, cancel that for me.
M: Sure. Your new total is $8.20. Have a good day!
Text 9
M: So Heather—you told me you got some good news this week?
W: I did. I am the new head of the communications department.
M: Good for you! How did that happen?
W: My boss loved the work I did on the new travel ads. Obviously, they were very well received by our customers.
M: So, what does that mean? Do you get a big pay raise?
W: Not yet. They will evaluate my performance in a year from now.
M: Lucky you! So, how is your new job different from your old one?
W: Basically, I get to choose my own projects and manage my own team. I even get my own secretary.
M: I’ve always thought you were a good leader. And you always have brilliant ideas for advertisement.
W: Thanks. I’ve worked really hard to get where I am.
M: So, what are you working on now?
W: I still have a couple of other projects I’m working on. I won’t get my new title until the first of next month.
M: Well, I guess we should celebrate. Cheers!
W: Cheers!
Text 10
We’re back with the latest traffic report for the Greater Bay Area. We’ve just checked in with Sam Wong. He’s on the Macao side of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Obviously, there is a traffic jam about two kilometers from the end. Traffic going into Macao has been slow for an hour. The cause of this traffic jam is an accident on the right side of the bridge between a small bus and two taxis. Police and medical vehicles have been at the scene for half an hour already. Reporter Sam Wong says it appears that three people have been taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Five more people are getting medical help at the scene for less serious injuries. This accident is affecting the Macao-to-Zhuhai direction the most, and police are not allowing many transport vehicles onto the bridge. Sam Wong reports that police hope to get traffic moving again within 45 minutes. So, the mess shouldn’t last much longer, but avoid driving near the bridge entrance for now.
